I'm thinking of starting a message board but am overwhelmed by the number of co's and software available. Anyone have experience with software or services you like? I'm most interested in free resources -- with ease of use coming in a close 2nd -- but I'm open to whatever reviews best.

Any thoughts appreciated!

I have had this: http://www.yabbforum.com Recommended to me in the past, I haven't tried it though.

phpBB

It is free / opensource. Easy to set up.

IP Board

Not free, but they have a hosted solution that is affordable.

Leadwerks uses it for there community, I have tried the demo (admin sandbox basicly) not bad, having thought of giving it a try later this year.

I will tell you though, it is a beast to run a forum if traffic picks up.

If you're only looking for free solutions I personally like SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/) although I haven't hosted a forum in a long time so I don't know how they are these days.

But if you're willing to pay I'd go with Invision Power like That Guy John suggested.

If you're paying then vBulletin is used by most large communities. Having run it on one of my sites with 40,000+ members I'll be honest and say the latest release (v4) is buggy as hell. So go with v3 if you choose vB. IP is a very nice system, and we actually switched to that afterwards, the vB support is crap too (we actually pay for this).
