"A Small Time 3D Compo"

It's time to think small in a big way, we want you to make something small, and the kicker is, you need to add something to your render/scene that will give us a sense of scale showing just how small your model is.

Compo will run until March 28th

Rules:

1) This time the compo will be all about the Beauty Shot and how you can make a model and show us a true sense of scale. This compo should also help you learn that getting the scale right makes all the difference when trying to set up a scene.

2) A beauty shot/render must be posted in the compo thread to qualify.

3)Have fun!

Cheers!

I think I'll try my hand at this one, already have an idea running through my head.

Been in a scifi mood lately, so gonna try making some sort of mini robot.

Good luck to everyone who decides to enter!

I think he means something that is known in the real world. So say like a battery, or a quarter or some such. So when you compare the two, you can tell how big the model would be if you put it on your desk or something.

This could be interesting..
An electron is small, so would a sphere on a black background be acceptable?

Or the other extreme, our galaxy in relation to the universe.

What about a car in relation to the planet.

Are these acceptable or do you mean something small compared to a human?

Can you elaborate.
Thanks.

I might just stick to doing an ant.

This whole project/compo is about giving the user a sense of scale. The reason we say to put something in the scene to help give the scene a sense of scale is simply because any object can be made at any size, without something (anything) that we can 'identify' and help set the scale who is to say a sphere is 1 mile in diameter or one micron? if you can pull off an electron and we get a true sense of scale, more power to you.

that's all I can say.

Cheers!

should not, say i create an electron
and i manage to pull off the sense of scale, without adding stuff, shouldnt that give brownie points?

ie, less items needed to identify scale = brownie points?
no? yes? no?
xD just an idea=)

How will this be judged?

You say that a beauty shot/render must be posted in the compo thread to qualify.
So even if you are just trying to get the award for best model (not bothering with texture) or trying to get best texture (good texture, low poly crap model) it will still be judged by the beauty shot?

Not to long ago the majority of entries did not upload textures or models, we were forced to judge based on any wip or render we found in the thread. So judging this compo will be like retro-judging.

Cheers!

I haven't done one of these before and I think I would like to try this one.

So, do I post here with my beauty shot or email it to someone??

Question: is a YouTube video showing the stages we took to get to the finished product allowed?

if you can pull it off, a video would be nice and give the people here some insight into the process you used to get to the final shot, but you will be judged solely on the final Beauty Shot.

Cheers!

Yo, I'll enter this contest as I stated in this thread
In there you can find a bunch of stuff like wireframe shots and stuff if required.
I chose to make a Bonsai tree, since I figured it fit quite well with the theme. What with being a thing that's generally associated with being huge but is in a shape of smallness.
Here's the final render:

I've attached it in its true size and would advice anyone to look at that rather than the above. It's way more fun

Dear All,

Good afternoon to you all. How are you this afternoon? Blessed I trust! I am Blanton Hardy and I think I have a concept for an image that just might fit this competition. I have included a beauty shot along with some perspective shots. I'll let you and the moderator be the judge. Just a simple concept piece that I pulled while creating one of my games that I am currently working on that is coming out very soon. Hope you enjoy it!

Thank you so much and may God bless and all. Most of the images by the way that are submitted look hot!!

Hmm, it would seem many people had the same idea, modeling larger objects to overshadow normal sized objects, which is the opposite of the competition theme(at least the way I translate them).

So my question to David is if this is ok and if yes I'd like my Unicron render to be my entry instead of my Eject render.

edit: Also I need to point out, to keep things fair for everyone entering the competition, that starmind did not make the demon model in his entry. I'm sorry to have to point it out starmind, but honestly I think this goes against what these competitions are about. Unless David says otherwise I don't think your entry should be included. This is purely my opinion towards the 3d competitions and it's not personal towards you. You do great work for the FPSC community and I respect you as an artist for that. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Congratulations to the winners, your shiny badges have been set.

I'd like to say that I think I kind of dropped the ball on this compo, most of the entries seemed to misinterpret my description for the compo.. "Make something small.. and add something to the scene to give a sense of scale." I meant that you make a item that is small and add a normal sized item to give us a sense of scale. (thus exaggerating how small your compo entry was.)

Anyways, it was tough to judge this month for me because 'technically' most of the entries did not fit the compo theme. many entries made something 'Big' and added 'HUGE' items to show scale. And others had no added item in the scene.

If I might be so bold as to take Josh Mooney's entry as an example. Josh asked that his 'Unicorn' entry be used instead of his mini-bot vs mouse battle scene. I overruled that request. the unicorn pic was nicely set up to look like a photo, but the blue sphere had no identifiable scale. it could have been tiny and up close to the camera or far off in the distance and HUGE. His mini-bot battle scene gave a great sense of scale and in my humble opinion better fit the compo theme.

Note: submitting multiple entries is ok, we'll sift through them and select the best one to fit the compo.

Sorry if my compo description was a bit unclear. Next month should be easier to interpret.. SPORTS!!

Cheers, and gratz again to the winners.

Well its good for being one of my first renders from scratch... Dont beat me up too bad guys

Here it is:
Terrain: Bryce
Models and Particles: Sof timahge
Rendered: Indigo in Blender
Splash (from waterfall): GIMP
Shot 1-

Shot 2-

I know, the water looks fake and the terrain looks pretty bad. But the main model was the dragonfly which I think (IMO) turned out really well! Made a couple of different texture variations too

Let me know how I did... I know its too late for the contest, but did I actually have a chance (since this is one of the first ones Ive actually finished in a while)

Cheers,
Anayar
