I've been reading about Heroengine(http://www.heroengine.com/) the last few days. It seems like a great product, but quiet expensive for the indie market. Anyone use Heroengine or have thoughts about it?

Well if The Old Republic is using it as its engine then it must be pretty dandy. Looks brilliant. Comes with a good set of tools to boot.

Yeah, a basic indie license using HeroCloud is $4995 and 15% of profits. That sounds like a lot, but the ability to work with 25 team members in realtime on levels and the drag-and-drop nature of teh engine is amazing. This video really amazed me...

Wow, that looks absolutely amazing. Wish I had five grand to fork over. Even though I'm God Awful at any sort of game design, I'd love to play around with that.

Signature's are stupid.

My only problem is that you can tell it's more geared toward fantasy RPG's.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

You know it's being used to create Star Wars: The Old Republic right? That's not fantasy and they're obviously doing a good job. Just because the demo shows fantasy, doesn't mean it's geared that way.

Signature's are stupid.

I'm pretty sure Star Wars is fantasy.

I'm pretty sure it's Sci-Fi....which is different from Fantasy. You could also call it a "Sci-Fi Fantasy".

Fantasy: Explains things with the supernatural
Sci Fi: Explains things with science

Star Wars...because of the force, it kind of places it in the middle.

I get the feeling Hero Engine is designed in favour of MMORPGs more than anything, I suspect it's possible to customise it to work for other genres of games, but who knows?

I think it's not just designed in favour of MMOs but designed specifically FOR MMOs, though it could probably be used to create offline games too.

Yes, it is an engine for MMORPGs. From the reading I've done, it can be tweaked to work for other game types, but that's probably more work than its worth.

The beauty of HE is that it is "drag-and-drop" and pretty intuitive -- for the novice -- customizable -- for scripting (although you have to learn their scripting language) -- and edits can be made in realtime between 25 people logged in at once. This could make the "rough draft"/demo of a game develop very quickly.

I think if there's a team who has done their pre-production homework -- along with a strong development document -- this could be a good deal.

If you sign up with a free account on their site, you can login to a free sandbox version of the engine to play around with. The only thing you can't do is save after the session.
