I teach English to non native speakers and would like to use dbpro to create interactive voice programs with which my students could practise speaking set dialog. would that be really difficult to do? I am thinking of maybe creating a 3d world in which students can practise speaking in scenarios such as at a hotel, a train station, a grocery store and the like. It'd be great if people could also access the program over the Internet and maybe control an avatar that could interact with other users real-time. Is this all totally whacky? Do you know how much of this would be realistically possible? Thanks for your help ...

Sounds like a really good idea, sounds possible too, but not sure about DBPro. Would the Dark Voices plugin be able to do something like this?

This sig can be yours, too!

Maybe, i have no idea, the Dark Voices plugin is for Lipsync, not voice recognition, but since DBP is expandable, i imagine a speech recognition plugin would be possible.

Voice recognition isn't great... Some companies have got it working really well, but most voice recognition stuff is crap.

There is open source voice recognition software, but I don't think anyone has made a wrapper.

Tell me if there's a broken link to images in a thread I post, and I'll fix 'em.

thanks for the input .. I am going to check out OS VR.

From the reading around I've been doing, voice recognition works best if there is a limited amount of possible input. VR comes included with W7 and I have written a game that I can run with it, but there are some challenges. I have made a location with a couple of buildings and I can navigate through the location and enter the buildings using W7's VR, but not using the type of natural language I would like my students to practise. You say, for instance, 'mouse grid' and windows displays a grid overlay. You then say a series of numbers until the target position is located and then say 'click' to enter the location - W7 provides this functionality - as a first pass, I'd like to turn all this number saying into a more natural command such as 'go to the store', or perhaps better 'I need/want/have to go to the store'. And then, once at the location, have the user complete tasks, such as buy the groceries, through VR commands. If anyone has any idea how to do this, I'd value some pointers - thanks ...

i would think that you could store the commands in variables, get a string of what the VR thought you said, run a check of what matches the words, and run the command.

Try out Dragon , It is the most popular consumer product here in the US.
They have some sort of SDK as well, HERE.
They have some sort of education program HERE. Maybe you could get your school to pitch in on the license.
