Hey guys,

the other day I was at Target and I was browsing the electronics aisle, when I spotted a playable 3DS on display. If you were familiar with my town at all, you'd know just how exciting it would be to finally discover one when no other stores even had them out yet!

Anyhoo, as I approached it with growing anticipation, getting ready to turn it on, I braced myself for the 3D effect, and I was not disappointed. The effect was exactly what Nintendo promised; full 3D. Looking at the screen, I felt as though I could literally look around the objects as if they were real; it felt like I was looking out a window! The demo game was Pilotwings Resort, and it was surprisingly fun...I think it would honestly be worth the $40 price tag for the game.

I'm thinking about getting one after my next two or three paychecks. It's a really nifty console, and I can see getting a lot of enjoyment out of playing it. What are your guys' opinions on it? Has anyone else purchased one, and if so, do you think it's worth it? Has anyone had any adverse side effects from playing it with the 3D enabled for too long? What's the game you're most excited about for it? For me, it's the remake of Ocarina of Time coming out for it in June.

So yeah. Thoughts, comments, critiques!

I'd say wait. Right now there aren't really any good games available for the system. Once good games come out for it, I'll probably be getting one also, but right now there's no real appeal in buying a really expensive system without being able to fully enjoy it.

The sales of the system have also been under predictions, so *supposedly* the system will see a price drop sometime soon in order to get more buyers.

Targeted advertising working well above

anyways, from What I've heard, because the 3d only works at a certain position its extremely annoying (especially since true 3d is determined by being able to look around an object)

This isn't help by the motion controllers, meaning every time you do a certain action in game, you'll ruin the 3d effect for a few seconds.

Furthermore... ...the ports of what were good games are generally quite poor, or as this guy put it "Isn't the sky supposed to be behind the sea?"

But, If you wanna spend £200 (or equivalent) on a shiny new gameboy, go ahead, just look at the DS's previous games and expect nothing better.
At best, to a level headed person like me , It's a gimmick, nothing more

Thanks for the link Ben! I love ashens, he's a hilarious Youtuber.

The lack of proper battery life is a shame...a lot of people think it's something to do with the 3D effect, although that doesn't appear to be strictly electronic so I don't know how it could possibly be related...my theory is that the upgraded hardware and the same battery technology from the DSi is the culprit, and possibly the higher resolution top screen. Twice the amount of pixels=more intense graphical rendering. Yay!

Anyhoo, I think I'll wait a bit for the price to hopefully come down, and for more games to be released for it...did you know that they're making "Super Mario 3DS"? I think waiting for both that and Ocarina of Time 3D will be worth it. In the mean time, I'll continue saving up, and who knows; maybe by that time they'll have announced a new 3DS with extended battery life and improved 3D+tilt ability.

Nintendo's nearly as bad as Apple when it comes to new iterations of a device...

Apparently, 20% of the population either can't see the 3D effect (one of my friends can't see it very well), or it gives them motion sickness or makes them nauseous or something. I don't know if that's just the US population or the global population. Either way, though, it definitely depends on the person.

My friend has one and I think the 3D effect is amazing, but I already have a DS I don't play and this would be the same. I'd play it while it was shiny and new and then it would would end up covered in dust on my bedside table...

For gaming on the go I'll just use my phone for now. Angry Birds has my mobile gaming needs covered for the foreseeable future.

Maybe once they drop in price (although I think Nintendo consoles don't drop in price as quick as other consoles) and they have a better line-up of games that utilise the hardware I'll consider it...

Can anybody who has used on confirm or deny the 'you've got to keep your head in a certain position' statement?

I can. I've used the 3DS, yes the 3D is very good, but if your head isn't directly centered with the screen it hurts to look at it.

Yes, you do (yes, I have one!). There is an adjustable 3D slider and it does make a difference. It will be a while before 3D games start to come out properly so I'd suggest waiting a month or two, but as for getting one? I would definitely recommend it.

I can get around the concept of it being a good game, but It's been release umpteen times now, and only now have they stopped bothering to give it a new name

Well, if people are happy enough to keep buying it, I don't see the problem. If I could fool my girlfriend into watching Carebears the Movie every night, over and over, just by calling it Kindbears on tuesday, then Very Helpful Bears on wednesday, I'd save myself a lot of cash on DVDs.

But seriously, I don't think we can complain at Nintendo. We can only complain at the numpties who are happy to play recycled games. The same goes for CoD and all those FPSs using the same formula. If people will keep buying them by the millions ...

well, call of duty at least alters the games when re-releasing them

AND TEH GUNZ!?

They change the guns every one, yet somehow inevitably have every russian tooting an AK. And the new guns are essentially reskins of the last ones.

You can only balance guns so many times, so esentially its even worse since you can already tell which guns are the best. Famas is new the ppsh from WAW which was the g3c6 in mwf. (just if you never noticed)

If they actually had a worthwhile story then i'd pay to play it again tbh.

And i laughed so much at the 3ds failure XD friend had one for a week, strained his eyes to bad he had to wear eyepatchs for 8 (awake) hours a day and use a hole host of eyedrops and crap to ease the pain. So yeah im stearing clear of the buggers!

3D is way too underdeveloped. Never invest in the first few generations of a technology.

I dunno, the 3D effect was pretty darned impressive...I now think that 3D games are a totally feasible market. Last week, I would not have said such a thing, as quite honestly I thought it was a terrible idea. After experiencing it first-hand, though, my opinion has been changed.

Of course, it could definitely IMPROVE; but only in the sense that it needs to be adjusted so that players can tilt the 3DS from side-to-side without knocking out the effect. However, that's a problem with the way it renders the 3D (through autostereoscopy and a parallax barrier), not something that Nintendo can fix right off the bat...other than that, I think 3D games are well on their way to becoming a real, desirable thing that out future kids will find perfectly normal, just as kids born in the last ten years find facebook normal. That's my opinion anyhoo, and I'm sticking to it.

AFAIK, Nintendo officially denied it...

I bought a 3DS because it's a console... and I pretty much get them all It *does* have pretty good games already, contrary to what people here are say. I recommend the Ghost Recon game.... it's really great if you're into Advance Wars type turn-based strategy!

if you have lots of unlimited money than go ahead. otherwise you should wait awhile. over there in the US i bought one for my little sister and it was good so far. i liked Street Fighter 3d at gamstop. when i bought it for her there aren't that many games. it does have good graphics for a handheld.very good 3d as well. plus the features within the 3ds aren't working yet. i think it must be because they released it way too early i guess.

@Meng:

Yeah, the graphics are pretty impressive! In some cases it's almost GameCube quality (except for the textures...sometimes you can see how low-res those are ).

I'm going to heed your advice and wait a few months longer. I want to be able to purchase not only the 3DS itself, but I also want to get Ocarina of Time 3D, Paper Mario 3DS and if it's out before the end of the year, Super Mario 3DS (or whatever it's official title will be). Those three games right there will keep me occupied with the 3DS for quite some time once I obtain them.

And plus, if I wait a few months, the price will almost surely drop, or I'll at least be able to purchase a used system for less (if it's not by a lot, though, I'll buy a new one).

Just bought Ridge Racer 3D and what a great game, the 3D definitely makes it that bit better.
