I haven't seen an RTS on the gaming scene in forever. I guess posting this may help me catch up anything I've missed. I don't want any suggestions along the lines of the new command and conquer (childhood favorites ruined by EA) or StarCraft II (I just don't really want to play that game). I'm looking for resource management and base building.

Thanks!

^I liked Age of Empires too. You should check that out.

Starcraft II is really a great game, it's just very competitive, which can ruin the fun if you don't have enough time to play.

Yeah, Age of Empires is probably one of the best I've played so far. I have Empire Earth, but... I haven't installed it yet.

Personally I loved the second empire earth. But don't get the third, it is among the worst games created IMO. Its really great when you can get into a good city building server.

Sorry, I meant to clarify. I'm talking newer games. I've played Empire Earth, Stronghold, StarCraft, Age of Empires, Star Wars RTS, Star Trek Armada, Warhammer 40000: Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade.

I like those style games ^

What about Company of Heroes?

I quite like that, used to play it with my brother (who'd always kick my butt at these games). It's quite tactical, maybe a bit like CnC with little hints of Battlefield1942 thrown in.

Majesty 2 is looking pretty good but I haven't played much of it yet. I've heard anno 1404 is good too.

Supreme Commander 1 & 2 both offer unique styles of play and are both large scale war and resource management with. I highly reccomend them. Just not the xbox version since its buggy/laggy.

Anno 1404 is epic, IF you like sea battles and building

the land combat is slow and not much action there

and for the record, I am a man.

I know you want newer games but don't discount old RTSes you haven't played.

Dune and Dune II:

And long before WOW there was just Warcraft (screenshot is Warcraft 3):

Total Annihilation if you can find it. Also boasts one of the greatest soundtracks off all gaming history. I listen to it for inspiration when working.

Or there is always Starcraft for the original Nintendo:

I definately agree with CoffeeGrunt, AoE2 if definately one of the best out there imo, especially for its time. The units and strategies just sort of flow into the game.

And yeah, I have Empire Earth I. I'm about to install it, and I haven't played it before. First times FTW!!!

Age of Empires is my favorite, I have several of the games. I like playing Warcraft 1-3, but only in campaign mode. I did not enjoy age of mythology. Oh, and C&C Red Alert.

POPULOUS populous populous populous populous populous three.

I know it's old and totally not what you're looking for, but seriously Populous 3 is the best RTS I have ever played (Except maybe Homeworld... hmmm)

It's not the traditional kind of strategy game, but the X-COM series was pretty cool. In the first one (and probably some others) you created bases in various parts of the world, and bought soldiers/scientists/engineers as well as weapons (which of course could be researched), and when a UFO appeared you'd shoot it down with an interceptor craft and then send a mission to recover it, which was where the more traditional strategy part took place.

If you feel like a twist, try Black and White 2. It's technically not an RTS, but has elements of them. Is also unbelievably awesome.

Yeah, I really enjoyed B&W2, it's quite an absorbing game once you get into the war side of things.

Pah. Evil God, then again, city building is dduuulll compared to making tribal pagans submit to thine will.
