I've been thinking lately about new game design concepts, or just combinations of existing ones to make a game to grab someone's attention. But what are some methods of doing this? How do some of the better games out there get their originality? Here are some components of a generic game:

- dialog
- active objects
- background/static objects
- 2d sprites
- menu system
- GUI
- Data management/saving/loading
- cinimatics
- music
- sound effects
- characters
- storyline
- genre
- etc.

I do have a few thoughts of my own, but I'd like to get somewhat of an opinion from the community before I post any further.

This would be better suited in the Game Design board.

Control schemes can be very original sometimes. I don't understand where you're going with this thread though.

I suppose most games take a normal concept and then roll with it in a different way.

Example, QWOP, it's a racing game, but they deconstructed (food term!) the running of the player and made you control that aspect in crazy detail.

Other games featuring deconstructed mechanics, walaber's game gymnast. Space channel 5. X-Moto. Most simulators. Most diner-dash type games.

An original game, copyright Jerico2day:
Garbage man

You play the role of Lawrence the garbage man. The goal of the game is to land as many trash bags in the back of your garbage truck in a set workshift.

You must control the garbage truck moving forward and backwards and you control the garbage man by using up, down and space bar to let go. You throw your arm using the up/down keys and let go to toss the bag, if you got the right speed and angle, it'll go in.

You also must maneuver the garbage truck and keep it from running into obstacles that may cross your path.

The mods can move this thread to the game design board if they want to, I suppose.

But yeah, boy do I remember qwop, lol. But anyway, that's a good point, videogames tend to "scaffold" off of different ideas to make their own original game that isn't necessarily "weird".

And Obese, I suppose the question I'm really posing is what techniques are used to achieve video game immersion in general. I actually found a really good article that focused on the sound aspects of games but sort of went out to normal game design in general: http://www.gamestudies.org/0401/whalen/. Definately some good material there.
