I hope this doesn't violate the AUP in any way, or cause a flame war.

Following the loss of Game 7 in the Stanley Cup finals, a riot in downtown Vancouver broke out. Apparently there are 100,000 people there, as opposed to the 50,000 in 1994.

All this over hockey... Wonderful.

Multiple cars have been lit on fire, and multiple people have been hurt.

... Oh, and it has to be cleaned up for rush hour...

It's truly a sad day when that many people feel it necessary to riot over a worthless sport instead of something more meaningful. Seriously? HOCKEY???

Btw, in the vid it looked like most people were just doing it because it looked like fun and other people were doing it too. Like kicking the car, it looked like they were waiting in line to get a weak kick in, which didn't look very rioty to me.

Gas the retards and move on.

Yeah, a lot of people we're doing it just to do it, the police found people brought Molotov cocktails and crap with them, so there was gonna be a riot whether they won or lost.

Good news is, most of the idiots here put their faces on camera and on Facebook, so people are getting arrested and losing their jobs.

A few more pictures.

The last one has become pretty famous.

And thank you notes left on police cars and written on walls afterwards.

Yup.

Though, like I said, some people just wen't there to start trouble. I guess it's contagious, because there was 100,000 people in total.

The good news is that no one died, though there was one serious injury.

In my book, this bypasses the "I got upset" riot and goes straight to terrorism.

I'm glad that a lot of the asshats are getting arrested. Some people were posing for their friends while looting and damaging property. Didn't they know there were hundreds of reporters there? Now their idiot faces are plastered everywhere and there's Facebook groups with sole motives to tag them all. I'm so glad I wasn't there.

I only been to Montreal in Canada, and cant say much about Vancouver, but my impression was that it reminded me a lot of parts of Moscow- in Russia exept canada is a lot colder (a lot of the architecture is sortof similar and the cars they drive are very similar to what they drive in Russia as well (they even have russian Ladas )

But after the hockey riots there the first thing that i thought of is football/ soccer riots in Moscow. There was a large riot in 2001 or 2002 when russia almost made it to the football/soccer world championship and lost. There was another huge sports riot last year in moscow but the actual riot was not related to sports. It was just a croud of football fans went out on a violent rampage against Chechneans/immigrans and generally people of southwestern nationalities. The date of the game coincided with the anneversary of some russian football fan getting killed by some Chechneans or something.

I guess sports fans are the same everywhere.

I am not much into sports, but really i am all up for Canadians as i used to live in Boston and i really hate that city since its extremley in your face about their sports teams. it irritates me that nearly everyone there wears some article of clothing with Red Sox or Bruins or whatever. That City is just obsessed with sports. Many people i knew there didnt know any other interesting subject besides sports. (i ended up hanging out with stoners since they were the only ones who didnt care about sports and i wasnt geeky enough to hang out with geeks and the rest were all them beer+couch+TV+sports type people).

While this in itself isn't cause for alarm, I would like to point out that I myself do not care for watching sports. I believe it's an incredible waste of my time. I would rather play the sport than watch "professionals" play it. But, if someone got up in my face and was all like "GO <insert sports team here>! YEEEEEEAAAAH!" I would have to give them a well-deserved "GTFO nut shot" which would probably turn into a bar brawl, which I have no problem sneaking out of and letting the sporties duke it out for absolutely no reason.

That said, I treat sports fans the same way I treat gays. Keep your weekend activities to yourself, don't try to lure ME into your weekend activities, and I won't hurt you. You respect me, I respect you, all is well.

I agree lol. But the weird thing about Boston. The population there is so insanley influenced by sports and the sports culture is really "in your face" kind. Even if they dont directly bother me or talk to me on the subject or try to recruit me into Red Sox fan society, The influence is so extremley strong, that it still irritates the hell out of me. When i went to highschool back in boston, like half the guys wear red sox shorts, I go to some classroom, the teacher is a spoerts fan and has red sox poster in the class, I go to the next class. before the class starts the teacher talks to some of the students for 3 minutes abiout the last nights game, i go to the gym, (sure i dont mind playing some sports at the gym) but everyone in the locker room cant shut up about last nights baseball game.
Again, then subject dosent toch me directly but nearly avery day, i constantly see RedSox logo blinking in front of my eyes and my ears constantly echo stuff like "seen last nights game? NE-Patriots! Superbowl, Redsox, Game! Baseball, names of varios players who i dont gove a damn about but because of the constant mentioning of their name around me it was drilled into my head! GREAT I now have useless information taking up precios gigabytes of my brain memory, and i cant erace it since i hear it every day and if you hear stuff often like that your brain automatically remembers it. I cant imagine how much crap my subconciosness absorbed over the years.

And the worst part is when "drop-kick- murphys" song "Boston" (which is somehow associated with sports culture in Boston)

when that song involontary gets stuck in my head.

This is a reason i am glad i moved to Moscow. For one Moscow has like 5 native sports teams and like 10 more teams from other cities which people also like. Also the sports team rivalries, can get kindof violent here (what can i say sports fans) so people here dont walk around in "moscow locomotive" (football team name) clothes because there is always a chance that a small group of "moscow Torpedo" (another football team) fans will see you and beat you up because apperentley "Moscow Locomotive" and "Moscow Torpedo" are sworn enemies. Also there might be that factor on what type of people like which team. For example "Mos. Locomotive" fans are for the most part arrogant snobs so people dont like them a lot.

That actually reminds me, Chechneyan Terek football team (russia was at war with chechneya for a long time, and to pay back, russian government gives chechneya all kinds of breaks and leniant law exeptopns kindof like- chechneyan republic has a "president" and acts almost like an independent country while other republics are under federal control and have governors not presidents) Anyway Apperentley this kind of leniant policy towards Chechneya even spread into sports area. I am not a fan of sports and i dont really care but it was hard to ignore this. A lot of fans and and big sports people are complaining about the fact that referees let Chechneyan football team get away with breaking rules and unfair play.

Yeah... so .... sports....
