You know what's funny? I'm from the Netherlands, in Europe, and I love Coca Cola. I drink that stuff in unhealthy amounts - it's my form of coffee. People around me tend to wonder why I don't die due to sugar poisoning. That kind of guy, me.
A few months ago, I headed to GDC in San Francisco. First time in the States, I was all psyched and happy and looking forward to having a great time. We visited a breakfast in Downtown San Francisco and had some crepes and where everyone drank a coffee or juice, I ordered a Coca Cola.
The first sip destroyed my hope for having a good time.
It turns out them Americans drink Coca Cola with the sugar replaced with something called corn syrup. Now, corn syrup - as far as I'm concerned - is the equivalent of Satan himself as a food product. It tastes absolutely like herbal tea, instead of the synthetic sugary mess I want to drink, it sticks to your teeth and palate and I mean seriously what the hell America?
Some locals explained to me that if I wanted 'real' Coca Cola, I had to buy Mexican Coke - which sounds like a drug; it actually is Coca Cola imported from Mexico - it took me a few days to find a shop that sold 'em (and at exorbitant prices, mind you) - but I bought a dozen.
I had a pretty good time anyway, but next time I'm in the States, first thing I'm doing is stacking up on Mexican Coke.
