*** Mod edit *** Don't edit your posts just to insult people, no matter how much you are provoked. You take the high road, and I won't need to waste my time editing it out. Good luck getting your old system running!

I had this old PC AMD Athlon 3000 thing collecting dust in my closet. The power supply in it was broken, the heatsink/fan and the other fan were broken as well. So I took those all out and replaced them with the power supply, heat sink and fan from my other computer that is broken as well. I also put my nvidia 8400gs in it as well (the 32mb integrated just isn't going to do it.)

The computer starts up fine, sounds great and is nice and quiet; however, the monitor doesn't seem to even acknowledge that the PC is on. Nothing whatsoever happens on the monitor. The keyboard lights will light up, and then disappear immediately. Once they turn off, I can't turn caps lock on or any other lock to see it it's still on. The computer is still turned on, but I can't do anything at all.

I've tried taking the video card out and having it on with just integrated card, but that doesn't work either. I've tried putting the video cards into each different slot as well.

You're grabbing a PC that is nearly ancient, and trying to get it to work, what did you REALLY expect?

Instead of going out, getting a job, and buying a new PC, you decided to do what? You made a website that asks people to give you the means to buy a new PC.

I can understand donating to African villages that have no means of water, or even see donating old clothes to help someone who has trouble getting by, but buying someone a PC? You're in college. Get a job. In the time it took you to write that sob story, you could have gone out, and looked for a job.

Honestly, I would donate. However, seeing as it's only to support your gaming habit, and not to do something like raise money for charity or to produce something worth value, I'll choose not to. Why would we pay you to sit around doing nothing?

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

hmmm, I have a crap computer that sometimes does similar stuff.
I'll share mine in the hope there may be a fix in there.

the problems with mine are the following,

bad connection with my ram chips -fixed by taking them out and putting them back in, sometimes even just jiggling them works.

video card not sitting in slot correctly- (I have a tower and i lost the screws so the card can hang and not connect.) fixed by removing and replacing card and propping with a broken ruler.

dead ram chips - only way for me to tell is that the machine noise makes little beeps. (not the speaker but the electrical hum makes a pulsing beep, then i know i've fried more ram)

since neither the new video card nor the onboard video make any difference i think maybe its your ram or ram connection, though I wouldn't rule anything out.

try swapping out the ram and see what happens.

Hope u get it fixed man.

Quote: "this might be the only post i've read on this forum here in the past ~6 years that's truly struck a nerve & i'll leave it at that..."

I have a great idea for you then... Go away again for another 6 years =)
And yes, I'm soooo pathetic because I spent twenty minutes on freewebs.com talking about computer issues and saying you should donate. Very pathetic of me. No really, it's pathetic! It's pathetic of me to try and gather money so I can have a PC for college and to play games. Because I'm the first person in the history of mankind who has tried to do silly things to gather money! Yep that's me alright! It's funny how posts by people who are a complete arse can actually lighten your day, really is.

Quote: "You're grabbing a PC that is nearly ancient, and trying to get it to work, what did you REALLY expect?"

I didn't expect anything less. Though I was at least expecting it to turn on. Well, not really. There was a light of hope! But the hope has failed me =( Ahhh sad day. If I could at least get it turned on to use Microsoft Word then it's all good.

Quote: "You made a website that asks people to give you the means to buy a new PC."

If it works, then guess what? I just got a computer. If not, then where am I? Oh yeah, same exact place as before. I had an idea that took me twenty minutes... Did I lose anything? Yes, I lost one round of Killing Floor. Unfortunately I did quit on wave 11, so I did lose a round of the Patriarch, but I think I can kill him any day. Did I gain anything? Probably not, but was it worth a shot? Of course. I'm doing what I can to get money for a PC. And I'll do what I think is necessary.

Quote: "Instead of going out, getting a job, and buying a new PC, you decided to do what?"

I have a job. I have for two years. But unfortunately, I live on my own (well beside roomates but they don't count) and I only work six hours a week (company is probably gonna close soon so I guess it's time to look for a new job.) I go to college full time, fall, spring, and summer. I don't have cash like the little spoiled babies in life do.

Quote: "but buying someone a PC?"

Thraxas was telling me people here donated money to Green Gandalf so he could get a PC? Something like that. Maybe it wasn't Green Gandalf, maybe it wasn't here, but someone, somewhere, got a PC lol.
I do like how you say, "but buying someone a PC?" It's funny because I'm not literally asking for a person to give me 300 bucks. I was more hoping there would be like twenty people who were all like, "YES! YES HAYDEN! YES I will help you in your college and gaming endeavors! Here's 5 bucks!" Something like that. I had it perfectly vivid in my mind, 'someone's jumping up in down with a huge grin, their left hand held high with a ten dollar bill and they just can't wait to hand it to me.' You know? Something like that. Not YOU personally give me a pc. That's silly!

I've tried to get money set aside for a computer, but then a car breaks down, a sister totals a truck, anything else that could possibly stop me from saving money occurs.

Quote: "Honestly, I would donate. However, seeing as it's only to support your gaming habit"

Actually I legitimately need a PC for college. But yes, I would love to play video games on it as well lol. My roomates are all stoners unfortunately and don't even go to school; needless to say, none of them have a computer. Didn't think a house with no computer in America existed, but I was wrong lol. I'm so not down to stay at Sierra JC for hours when school is already out. Ugh how crappy would that be?

@Kezzla - Thank you for not being lame and actually trying to help. It could be the RAM. I did take them out and go to FRY's today to see about getting more RAM.

On a side note, donations open up in 3 days time. Feel welcome to give me lots of money Ahhh, well it seems this donation approach might fail haha. The angry/depressed approach just doesn't work I guess.
I knew I should have put more focus on the whole college thing. Not sure why I didn't as it's the general point in me trying to get a pc. People understand college issues, maybe that would have pulled in a donation or two. And I figured people would get all butt hurt because I said "help a gamer game."

Next time, I'll get it next time

Though I am going to try and spam my site all over the internet lol. Lots of people on the internet, someone is bound to donate eventually!

Quote: "I can understand donating to African villages that have no means of water, or even see donating old clothes to help someone who has trouble getting by, but buying someone a PC?"

Come on now! Blasphemy! You know you want to donate! Come on, give in!

Switching out the RAM sticks did not work.

I think what is so frustrating, the first time i turned it on, it started up instantly and worked perfect. But i had the broken heatsink in because i didnt know it was broken. It got hot and froze in about thirty seconds. So i unplugged everything to let it cool down. I left it alone for one day, replaced the heatsink, and now this. I broke something huh lol?

Everything I have I've worked for. My parents didn't buy me my PC. Yes, they bought me my first PC like, 6 years ago, but that's been long replaced. While I don't disagree with the fact that many people are simply handed things in life, it's rude to assume that everyone is simply given things. Seems to me that instead of actually going out and working, you'd rather sit at home having pity on yourself. It seems to me you're on some sort of internet connection now, meaning you're able to communicate and get work done. While getting college work done on say, an iPod Touch is rather difficult, there are always ways to get things done.

You're right, you loose nothing for making this site except for a few minutes of your time, but in reality you're loosing a lot of respect from people.

You might be able to get something out of this if you were a nice, helpful guy whom people liked. When people see you being a sarcastic jerk to a respected member of the community, not a chance.

The forum gathered money to buy Green Gandalf a new computer because of his years (literally) of providing help on a topic that few people know much about (shaders) to people on the DarkBASIC Pro boards. He did not ask for it - he had mentioned a few times in the course of his shader work that his terrible old computer couldn't run it very well, and other members of the community started an effort to give him a new one.

Ehhh... just read through your website(which i regret). One thing that struck me as odd is this

Quote: "Needless to say, they wasted several hundred because it lasted about 2 years. One day the computer got the lovely Blue Screen of Death. Ever since, it BSOD's non stop. We took it to the shops and in three weeks, they weren't able to figure anything out basically."

The people in "the shops" cant have known what they were doing, it sounds like a software error to me. Nothing a reinstall of windows cant fix.

LOL, do you really believe that I'd donate towards you sitting on your arse the entire day?

I flew over your website, and it just makes me laugh

Quote: "This computer had 256mb of RAM (the only spec I can remember) and the game ran at literally 2 frames per second. It wasn't like a choppy frame rate though; it was more like a slow motion. I just remember trying to run alongside my buddy but going about a millionth of his speed and not being able to stay anywhere near him."

That's a load of garbage, and you know it. Firstly, 2 fps is impossible to play. Secondly, in game speed is controlled by the server, so no matter how slow or fast your computer is, you'll always walk the same speed.

Get yourself a job, or do something to earn yourself money. It's not hard to come by these days.

Tried it. Actually tried installing Windows 7 on it too. And yeah, they had no idea what they were doing. They had the comp for 3 weeks! 3 weeks and figured out literally nothing.

If I was servicing an old computer and came across the same problem I would do the following.

1) Check the connections, if they are loose that's a good starting point. I've had VGA connectors practically fall apart in my hands before now.

2) Check the cables (that basically means finding some you know work, and trying them out).

3) Swap monitors with one you know works correctly.

4) Swapping out the graphics card with one you know works will eliminate that problem.

Things to check for:

1) you mention is nice and quiet. Pretty unusual for old machines, is the CPU fan spinning?

2) Is the PC speaker plugged in? If if is, try removing the RAM and CPU, and any other PCI/ PCI-E cards. The motherboard should beep an error code. If it does, identify the motherboard and look up the code.

Thanks Daniel, I'll try some of that out. It could be a cable issue so I'll try a few others as I didn't do that.

I did already try swapping out the graphics card and monitors.

Just though I would throw in there that I just got 2 different donations already lol. For a total of $15. So regardless of how "pathetic it was" I'm now $15 closer to having a computer for college and killing floor.

I complain a lot? Or if someone calls me pathetic, I mock them? That's pretty much all I do when I'm pissed. Just don't call me pathetic. Or do you mean Sylvester Stallone Rambo?

Do you have a job? If not, why? Jobs are there so you can earn an income and buy nice things like a computer. Jobs are not there for other people to acquire and to give their wages away to some lazy kid who can't be bothered to find a job.

YES.. I have a job. I'm sorry that working for $7 an hour does not magically appear $600 in front of me... I actually have bills to pay that leave me with $12 in my bank account at the end of every month.

You are asking for donations for a computer so you can play games, while there are people out there asking for donations so they can eat for the night. Unbelievable.

I didn't realize needing a computer for college was such a horrid crime either. I'm doing what I can to get a computer, hell I've trying to fix a computer made of wood... Obviously this thing won't play games... But that's irrelevant for all I care because I need it for college.

You people need to lighten up, seriously. You are all blowing this way out of proportion.

Quote: "Did you read what you wrote on your site? yeah, i totally believe you need it for college after reading it...

I'm not even going to argue with you because not only are you entirely ignorant and do not know what the hell you are talking about, I actually have two jobs, believe it or not. I work as a delivery driver for round table pizza, and I've been working as a Solar Representative for PG&E for almost 5 months... I only get about 8 hours a week of work at round table because I work well over 30 hours a week as a Regional Manager for this Solar business and on top of that I have full time college. That doesn't leave me much time. With two jobs you'd think I'd have plenty of money... NO, I don't because I haven't gotten ONE single pay check as a Solar Rep. The job is entirely 100% commission based and contracts are at a hold right now, have been for a while and there is nothing I can do aside from keep selling and hoping that the company will finally fund the project (I'm not going to go into details because I can go on for hours) and it could be several months, maybe over a year before I ever even get a paycheck from it. Why am I still doing it? Well it's easy work, and when I do get paid, it will be a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot--did I say a lot?--of money. But it could take over a year easily. Obviously I'm going to have college classes before I get paid so I tried to get some money for a PC. And YES, within the next year, I wouldn't mind playing a video game. I can almost guarantee I work a lot harder than most people even responding to me. So back the hell off, quit with the accusations, pay attention, and if you are going to continue calling me pathetic, don't even bother posting because it gets us nowhere.

I was ALSO told by a close friend and forumer here that this community put money together for another forumer and basically bought this person a computer. THIS COMMUNITY, THE GAME CREATORS FORUMS... put money together........ and donated a PC to another forumer here. I didn't find my situation too much different so I gave it a shot.

AND... My website focuses entirely on me saying I want the money to game because these forums are a GAMING community. Most of you haven't left your bedroom in 15 years so I thought maybe (obviously I was wrong) that some people here would think that my situation (the gaming aspect of it) sucks enough to donate a few dollars. Yes, I was obviously wrong and should have gone the other route (not that that would have worked either because I'm sure I would still be a pathetic human being). I DO in fact need a computer for College--more than I do for gaming. This thread would never have been made in the first place if I didn't. Do you really think I would try and fix an 8 year old computer to play modern games on it? I'm computer illiterate but I'm not that stupid. I need Microsoft Word or else I will have to come here (my parents home) every single day basically just to do homework (usually I post from my phone.) I have an extremely difficult semester this time because I have been lazy the past two years and I'm trying to make up ground...

If you're going to be stubborn still I will literally post a picture of my pay stub from round table (I'd have to wait until August 2nd as I don't know where any are ATM but that's when I get paid), then I'll post the 823423 emails I have about my other job as a Solar Rep, and THEN I'll post my schedule for next term at college. If that's not enough 'proof' that I have a job, then honestly just shove off because I couldn't possibly care less what you lot have to think of me.

AND if that STILL wouldn't be enough proof that I have a job and cannot afford a PC... Then I'm sure Thraxas (a well respected and liked MODERATOR here as you already know) wouldn't mind popping in and confirming that I DO in fact have two jobs and go to school full time. Been good friends with him for several years now so he could fill y'all tards in.

I think you are blind to the fact of how ignorant, arrogant and selfish you are yourself, never mind the other forum members.

If you have 2 jobs, I suggest you manage your finance's a little better. Maybe cut back on any subscriptions, stop eating out and buy food that will last weeks, not minutes.

Have you moved out of your parents home, if so why? That is one big mistake if you are on a low income. I work 80 hours a month and get paid £590 of which, £200 I give to my parents, leaving me with plenty to buy things I want. Why couldn't you have done this? Maybe then you could buy a computer yourself instead of begging for one and acting like a spoilt arrogant brat and starting a thread off by insulting a member of the forums.

I'm sure others on this forum are just as annoyed at you, but are refraining from posting. I can't believe how frustrated you make me feel with what you have been saying.

Maybe if you came out as being a nicer person, then people might have donated, but when you act like this, I know I wouldn't.
