Found this while searching Valve's publications. Definitely some great advice here, this is the thought process that made Portal so good (and how they made Portal 2 even better, in terms of background story). Hopefully someone here gets inspired by this to make their next ground breaking portal game!

Every budding game designer and hobbyist programmer like we have here would do well to heed the advice: embrace the constraints and find inspiration within the boundaries.
