I was just thinking about this... suppose you have two coordinate sets...

p1 = <x1, y1, z1>
p2 = <x2, y2, p2>

Then you made a bounding box of sorts from them... If you could read in the minecraft world file, get each of the cubes in that bounding box (verts and polys), could you not get a representation of a 3D object?

I know it sounds crazy but it also sounds fun.

It could work but it would be pretty hard since the world is divided into chunks and all that stuff. But maybe when mojang releases the mod tools it will be possible

There is source code readily available for a lot of these and all these map viewers do is read the save data.

Thanks! I dunno if I'll go through with it or not, it seems like it might be pretty complex at this point.
