As with the exporters you need to use the Character Studio Physiqué modifier to attach them rather than the standard enveloping.
maxplugins has alot of different formats a good few are supported by DBPro, check them all out as some work with standard Biped (Quake3 for example) whereas other like DirectX 8 require Physique...
another point is you can try chopping the model into sections and then exporting it as sections, you'll notice that 3ds will export that with biped

(3ds doesn't support mesh deformation)
