I'm sure for art I'm sure there's something generic that's simple and easy to do. Gradients work when the artist knows what to do with them, I would suggest even just a plain colour is better. But hey, this is a Games Programming forum and it has art sections, there's 3D chat and 2D All The Way, you might be able to find feedback somewhere on the forum and advice to improve your skills elsewhere.
I'm not much of an artist myself either, 3D Art maybe (but that's after a long cycle of not being brilliant at it). I'm working on a Text Adventure where I'm going to be using my own backgrounds and at the moment I've just decided to keep it very simple - for example, my 'citiscape' is just 4 black rectangles with a dim night sky like gradient (but not an overpowering contrast between the 2 colours). Very simple, but it isn't an eye-sore.
