If youre into 3d sculpting you should really get a tablet first. However it wont be necessary if youre just going to work with 3ds max.

I think it depends. Give us more information on what you want to do first.
At the moment I am majoring in Computer Science and it is brilliant!
May want to look into University as well? If you haven't been already.

Well if you want to start a career with a reputable video game company then getting a bachelor's degree in Computer Science would be the best choice (starting to be the only choice). From what I've seen from various other threads like this and from job applications at the top companies (Blizzard, Bethesda, etc.) a Computer Science degree is almost always a requirement. I also saw the same thing in various interviews with game directors and such.

If I were you I would stay away from the video game institutes and such unless you are planning on doing art.

I too recommend getting a real university degree first, then on the side you can do the Game Institute courses. I have purchased access to 6 or 7 of those Game Institute courses and thought they're great, but they will probably not help you get a job in the industry if you don't have a degree. Just take a look at the job listings for any game company... virtually 100% of them require a degree of some kind!

Because that's putting all your eggs in one basket and silly. Yes, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, but that doesn't mean we should all drop out of University.

I recommend it You'll learn lots doing a Computer Science bachelor. And, a degree is a degree. And all good jobs in the industry require it
Not to mention it is good fun. The whole University life-style is something everyone should experience

They say a degree gets your foot in the door but it's demonstrating your skills that gets you the job. A degree pretty much says, "this person is well educated", which can be important to some employers out there, then with what you can demonstrate with your skills (current projects, for example) you've got a bonus against other candidates with Computer Science degrees or even a Games Programming degree (my friend got into Lionhead Studios with one). I think in general if you're trying to get a job the more positive things you can say about yourself, the better, because generally you're not going to be the only person applying for that job and you'll want to be better than the rest.
