First off I'd like to point out that I'm talking about the original series of Fullmetal Alchemist from 2003 consisting of 51 episodes, not the movie and not the brotherhood series.

I don't know how many of you know this show already, I just stumbled across it a few weeks ago. The show was rated #1 best series of all time in Japan back in 2005. I've watched half of the English dubbed version already, and I LOVE the show. Here are my pros, cons, and misc:

Pros

-The story is very well written, it has a very gripping storyline, and is pretty complicated (a lot of characters to keep track of)

-The animation is a typical anime style, well done

-The voice acting is excellent

Cons

-The story takes a while to take off. The whole first season is just about introducing all of the characters, and a bit of the background story.

Misc

-I don't know how to explain it, but the series has left a sizeable impact on me. I keep thinking about it.

-Beware, it contains blood, gore, and some disturbing scenes.

-I rate it a 9.5/10

Discuss.

Watch brotherhood after it. The story is written a lot better.

Good show, unique footing that I haven't seen any other shows pull off before. Defiantly worth a watch though skip the original and go to Brotherhood.
Brotherhood shortens the filler and concentrates on the story more. The filler is mostly still there but is a lot better done and ties with the story more.

I will do that, I've heard good things about Brotherhood too.

One thing I don't understand is (spoiler)

I completely disagree with all of this. You can't compare the two, because they are not really the same. After Ed and Al meet up with their teacher, it kind of steers away from the manga's story, but that's because the manga wasn't really finished at all.

Both are great, I love both...you can't really compare them because they're not really the same! Brotherhood follows the manga a lot closer, the original series had to improvise and I think they did an excellent job.

So, watch both of them if anything. I love Chemistry and alchemy, and I know it's a TV show, but all alchemy ever really was, was Chemistry.

And if you think this show had too many fillers, you should try watching the show I"m currently watching. Detective Conan. I don't know the exact specs, but it's somewhere around 16 years old with 630 episodes. I forget how many movies but it's somewhere around 20. Great show though if you like detective stuff

@TheComet
I think they explain it near the beginning of the series, and I can't be 100% sure since it's been years since I seen the series...but SPOILER:

Can we just rate movies and series here? If so I would do it on a regular basis from now on

I love Fullmetal Alchemist. I've watched all 51 episodes + the movie and I'm currently going through Brotherhood (just need a couple of DVDs to complete the set) and I've got up to Volume 15 in the mangas. I can't buy any more because Christmas is coming up. It's pretty much the first anime for me to watch to the end (Evangelion followed afterwards, which is very good and not a typical 'zomg giant robots' thing, but quite psychologically screwed up).

Of course Brotherhood and the original series take different directions just because of the manga, given I've neither completed Brotherhood or the Manga, I am very excited to see what happens. The original series had some really good twists though.

Basically, FMA is the reason I should shoot myself for previously having the attitude "anime sucks".

when i watched brotherhood it was before the final part came out on DVD and it left me right at the climatic point of the series, since then i waited for months (since febuary) for the final part of brotherhood to come out, it came out in august this year. I dont know how i survived waiting that.

This was the first version created: the one with 51 episodes. But Brotherhood is more based on the actual manga. This is because the maker of Fullmetal was asked by Bones if they could take her idea (when it wasn't finished) and make a TV show. She made all the characters for them, then later made Brotherhood based on the finished product.

I really want to rewatch FMA-Brotherhood soon, I watched many animes but both Full metal Alchemist series- Brootherhood and the original 2003 series are the most memorable animes i have ever watched. For some reason i cant really remember any other Anime serieses that well.

no not pokemon, and yes i have watched pokemon but in my head it was all like catching pokemon, having family friendly adventures and fighting family friendly villans of team rocket and tournament battles. all mixed up in my head

but in alchemist, i can almost recall every episode and have clear image of every charecter

and i was actually very shocked when ... spoiler alert!

and the revelation of the conspiracy and stuff, and guessing whose side are charecters on and stuff. it was completley thrilling and memorable

Dragonball up to the end of frieza saga was great, but i loved that since childhood.

i do remember liking "Black Cat" the way the story unraveled reminded me a lot of how final fantasy game stories unravel maybe a bit simpler, Again, i dont remember the charecters or the plot but i do remember likeing it. Infact i should rewatch it some time soon.

Btw, I am challenged right about now. The thing is, after watching something great (like FMA) i have the urge to watch something equally as great.

based on the fact that i enjoyed FMA a lot, what other anime shows do you think i will equally enjoy I have a hard time with this as i am not sure if its gonna be as good and maybe i thought i should listen to other peoples opinions opinions.
