Hi,

Here's the link to the AGK Player for Playbook

Here's an earlier video of the player in action:

Will the Playbook dev be similar to the android one?

Easier than android, everything is handled within the IDE (a variation on Eclipse), and you don't even need a USB cable to test tier 2 apps as they have their own WiFi app transfer.

The distribution side of things is a little more restrictive though. I don't think you'll be able to self host compiled apps like you can with an apk since you need to sign them and upload a debug token to the device.

As long as submission process is similar to the Apple store, it's no big deal.

The submission process is similar to the Apple Store, but it has few advantages:

1. There is no fee to become a AppWorld Developer
2. The certificate files necessary for sign your application (mandatory for submission) is also free.
3. The approval time varies a lot, but I heard people that had his app approved in couple days.

If you want to get prepared for it, start registering at http://www.blackberry.com/developers. I don't think there are many documents to send, but I believe it depends on which country you are from.

Cheers

Just been looking through the app market on it, not very many apps at all. In my opinion this is good, because the apps that we develop and release on the BlackBerry Market won't be buried by thousands of other apps!

The advantage I see is that this is 1 device so there is no fragmentation madness like on Android, so it's easy when it comes to resolutions, etc...

Exactly! I noticed on the market there are several 3D games that say they're "optimized for the Blackberry Playbook". It's great, because you know if it looks good and plays good on your Playbook it will with other Playbooks.

On the other hand, a disadvantage is that you will have to buy a Playbook just for the sake of testing!

bjadams,

Having the device is always the ideal, but there is also a Playbook simulator VM. Not sure if it will support everything AppGameKit Player has (OpenGL stuff), but if it does, it could be used for initial testing.

Cheers

Any news on the release date?

Anyone know if the Beta OS for the Blackberry playbook will run the Android apps created with AGK

This new OS for the Blackberry playbook have anything to do with the delay of the AppGameKit Blackberry support release date?

Eagerly Awaiting any more news...

Hi,

Paul had some issues with Playbook and I think he's resolved them now. I'm hoping he can get it finished before his Xmas break. I'll ask Paul to post an update when he's online.

The AppGameKit player is finished except for the virtual keyboard input that has a bug in it (shouldn't take long). Meanwhile we're just waiting for the App World account to be approved to put it on their app store. Judging by the time it's taking them to do that I'm not hopeful that the AppGameKit Player will be approved by Christmas. The tier 2 version will require documentation and guides for the Playbook NDK so that'll take longer.

No the Android support is quite limited, no native code, which is what the AppGameKit player is based on. But that won't be necessary once we get the AppGameKit Playbook player done.

Isn't there a way to load .bar files onto the Playbook without the use of App World? If I recall correctly, I have a program that I used to load on .bar files that were converted Android apps so I could use them with the OS 2.0 Android player.

You can side load the Bar file as long you are a registered developer (free) and have the device set in development mode.

So, if TGC make their signed bar file available, it would be possible load it directly.

Yes, that would be cool. I'm sure because of the holiday season it'll probably be take a while for RIM to approve the app.

I believe that TGC could attach the BAR file here, for those who have the developer keys. But I wonder if there are anyone still working today

Sorry guys, Paul is now on holiday (as are the rest of the TGC team). The AppGameKit player app actually failed submission. So when Paul returns in early Jan he will deal with that straight away. So close, yet so far!

Hey Rick

sorry to hear that. I hope the cause isn't anything closer than the iOS version. If it helps, questioning the decision using the BB Community forums had helped few developers with apps rejected. I hope it is just a technical detail though (like they not being able to test it, or not getting for which is intended for).

Cheers

Do you need Blackberry's approval to release T2 support?

bjadams,

AppWorld works in the same way as Apple Store. You have to submit your application (T1 or T2), and if it gets approved, it is published on the store.

Also, for AppWorld it doesn't matter if it is T1 or T2. Everything is going to be seen as native application.

While TGC is waiting for approval, I suggest all AppGameKit developers that want to publish games for the Playbook, to sign up for Blackberry Developer program. Normally it takes a while to get your credentials, sign keys, etc... So doing it in advance you allow you to be ready when AppGameKit player is released.

The advantage here is that there is no fee to become BB developer.

Cheers

I am already a registered Blackberry dev as it was free.

Just as I suspected, TGC can release T2 support if they want to, as T2 users don't need any player.

Is there any chance that the AppGameKit Player.bar could be added to our order history, so we can just manually side load it?

What are they thinking?
They should be sending diplomatic geeks over to help you guys finish this.

I had to leave; I took the playbook back.

Cool, I've already downloaded it.

Is there any guide to build Tier 1 binaries already available? I suppose there will be a NDK project of some sort so we can bundle the tier 1 code as we do for iOS?

Thanks

Yes the Playbook platform for T1 final deployment and T2 development will be part of 107 build. We still have to write the guides to make it easier for you to fly through native compilation, and the AppWorld submission process. Start writing and testing your T1 app now, and rest assured when 107 is released you'll be one step away from selling on yet another app store

Also, could you tell us where are the temp. files stored on the playbook, after using AppGameKit Player? There used to be such on android, and they're taking lots of space when not used anymore. Any possibility on deleting those?

would love to know about the temp files too.

On Android a directory called AppGameKit is created on the memory card. In my opinion this is not the cleanest way, so I hope that a workaround will be found soon.

Does the same thing happen on Playbook, or does it work like iOS where it uses it's own app path sandbox (/Documents)?

@bjadams : We use the AppGameKit folder as a predictable location for temp files. Do you have an alternative location for these files in mind for Android devices?

So, to be able to test my AppGameKit on Playbook I will need to buy AppGameKit first?

I've started to rewrite my ZX Spectrum game Bozxle () for the Playbook. At the moment I can't tell how well it'll work on the Playbook, http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0027065

Yes the Playbook support is only in the purchased AppGameKit kit. The trial only has Windows at the moment.
