This was on the news on just a few days ago. I heard that some people are thinking if it would be possible to build a mountain in the Netherlands. They say that they want to create one up to 2000 meters. I think its ridiculous. Would it even be possible to make a man made mountain ?

http://news.discovery.com/earth/man-made-mountain-netherlands-110821.html

Anyway... to make a topic on this thread. What do you think ? Would it be possible to build a man made mountain ? Especially in a place like Holland were the ground is as soft like a teddy beer ?

I agree with this quote from the comments section:

That's a lot of earth to move. Something of order 10 cubic kilometres at least. That would weigh something like 10^10 tonnes.

I guess these kinds of volumes get excavated from quarries, so maybe it isn't totally impossible, but quarries have valuable ore. Doubt they could economically justify making a mountain right now, but would be awesome if they did!

They are currently building a port half the size of the province I'm living in, all of it being sand ditched in the ocean ( like those dubai islands ). If they can do that, why not a mountain. Imagine all those dutch people not having to drive to switserland to climb a mountain or to ski outdoor. At one point some people suggested building the mountain in the ocean, next to the airport, build in the ocean.

Well, that and a place to store nuclear waste Or maybe have an atomic bomb launching site inside the mountain. One moment you're on your ski's, the next you're on a nuke flying towards god knows where *whispers*Probably greece seeing how it's going right now with Wilders etc.*end of whisper*

Well, the old, abondoned, overgrown landfill here where I live sure looks like a mountain
But yeah, I guess it's roughly 1% of the proposed size of that one, hehe.

Hmm... one... if they build a mountain it will affect the local weather and atmosphere... either more rain or less... umm regarding if it can be done... yes it can... is it viable in this economy... yes as it will create at least several thousand jobs... specially as its a european country so health and safety law creates jobs of people watching the workers... and more people watching those people watching the workers... to tip it off the workers will earn money... and live local to the work site a.d spend that money locally... in gyms.... restaurants... whatever... were talking tens of billions of [insert currency here] so yes it is viable just like that 100 yeah bridge project theyre building between america and russia... cant remember the name of it... and umm yeah have you not heard of the airports being built on man made islands... which the one Osaka Kansai is built on is sinking every moment... they even built a second one on VERY UNSTABLE SEA BED... so regarding the on soft land... thats a non issue hehe...

But yeah this would be good for a lot of people... sorry for portraying my business mind here...
Hope this all made logical sense... and sorry for it being bunched together I typed it on my phone dang can not wait to get a dedicated to the forum tablet...

Hmm... Your opinion does make sense. But I just heard that it will cost € 80.000.000. If we really are going to build it. Then our tax will grow even higher and faster then the mountain will

@ Isocadia

Alright !!! I will bring some uranium to build that nuke.

Norion... time for you to sit on the naughty step...

Haha just kidding... do not fret over lack of language experience or understanding... just learn as you go

to be quite honest a language is what you see it to mean and be.

View is a non-professional perspective viewpoint

and

Opinion is a semi-professional or professional view

so they do differ slightly but yes they do have similar meaning...

No you do not need to doubt my English just how I portray it

I'm pretty sure they'd just be digging up soil and clay from elsewhere, so the only real expenses would be buying the land and hiring the workers. It's a bit of a silly idea, though if they built it inland they could take advantage of the massive creator they'd make, and build an artificial beach there. Or a landfill.
