Hello! I know there are a few on the forums that shall be able to answer this question. I have done some research lately and it appears that when i handle IC's to solder them and what not i should be using an anti-static wrist strap, but i was wondering if that is true because i havent seen any videos of people soldering IC's and wearing the wrist straps at the same time. So should i wear one or not, and what other precautions should i take to prevent blowing an IC? Thanks!

TTL ICs are all pretty safe to handle without any protection. As long as you don't powerslide over a wool carpet with it, it should be fine.

CMOS ICs are EXTREMELY sensitive to anything above 50 V. Some of them do have integrated protective diodes, but it's not a must. Handle with a wrist strap and solder on a surface that conducts electricity and is grounded so there's minimal chance of creating static electrical fields. Additionally, don't wear a wool jumper or anything of the sort. Silk and cotton should be OK, but aren't fool proof. If you don't have a wrist strap, make sure your body always has the same electrical potential as ground by holding your skin on the table.

If there are female entities in the room, feel free to take off your shirt (they like that). If you get one to sit on your lap while you solder, it decreases the chance of the IC breaking. Once soldered in to the circuit board, turn around, stare into her eyes, and say "Wanna hold my soldering iron, baby?"

Ah i figured it would be you to answer! Those are all nice points, also i thought of taking a piece of foil and wrapping it over the top of the IC to make connections to all of the pins, that way if there is any build up it will go to all pins as opposed to trying to go from one to the other, breaking the IC. Thanks!

That's the most priceless thing to have ever been written on these forums haha!

Anyway, you'll be glad to know i elected to use a microcontroller for the graphics on the console as well as for the audio!

I dont have any anti static wristband though, how should i make one? Would something like a Velcro strap with foil connected via a wire to the floor or a pipe or something like that work? Thanks!
