Ok i made the title sound really cool even though this thread isnt, but i was thinking would it be very hard to add some code to the site's code to prevent double posting? I know it can be a common issue, and the mods probably get tired of telling people like me to stop double posting! What i thought could be done is whenever you double post, the website automatically edits the second post into the first one. Just an idea!

But that would mean, for example, on the 3d board, whever oyu got something to update, it just edits the last post (if nobody posted in between) and thus my thread might pull of the page

Better yet, the website will just immediately ban anyone that double posts.

I've got a lot of ideas about this forum and most of them involve banning.

I think a puritanical system would be better. Anyone who double posts gets instabanned, and anyone who sees a double post also gets instabanned, to prevent the corruption of other forum members.

Anyone who thinks of the word doublepost should be banned, but I don't see how they can program that particular feature in...

Well you would have to hack into the brain with special brain reading and figuring out technology, or SBRAFUT for short. SBRAFUT is currently in early development stages, but when it's finished we should incorporate it into the forums!

It's been scientifically proven that when a human sees a double post, their nose holes contract very slightly. TGC could detect this through the webcam. So you'd have to introduce the following rules:

-People without webcames get banned and nuked
-People that see double posts get banned and nuked
-People that double post get banned and nuked

If might be easier if double posting caused the forum to go off-line for - 1st(30 days) - 2nd(90 days) - 3rd(Perm). Then you wouldn't have to ban anyone. After that, TGC would shut down and anyone found with TGC products would be deemed an enemy of the state and executed.

I don't think so Tim.

It's not much of an annoyance then an itch on that part of your back that you can't reach. Eventually you get it.

I don't think this would be a very good idea, because sometimes someone's internet can mess up and double post a thread or post (one of those people would be me) and it would be very frustrating to be banned because of bigpond's mess ups.

See that's what the original idea is meant to address. It does so by not getting the person in trouble but instead by editing the new post into the old...

Makes sense. It should also flag the 'edited' post as a new post so people are aware that it changed.

Just resisted an impulse to double post just for the sake of it

I don't see the big problem with double posting. Sometimes it's necessary to make another post rather than adding to an existing one.

It's called only posting once unless it's important. Pretty simple

Double posting can be annoying, especially if the second post doesn't really add anything new to the topic or is worthless, but sometimes it's inevitable/necessarily to double post. For instance, to get peoples attention, or add new important information, or keep the thread alive (WIP).
I think most people look for new posts, rather than go back to a previous post to see if anything has been added.

Cheers

You argue about this geeky stuff like double posting, and no thread about the lazy system here that lets in any spammers as they like, although theoretically the first level of registration here means a mod needs to approve your posts before they appear?...

Posting multiple times on Youtube, or a blog, using up all the available letters, is quite disgusting just as a view itself, but this just isn't a problem on a development forum guys.

I've never felt there is much issue with double posting, it can be important or acceptable as well as rude... How about just leaving something that warns the poster they are about to double post, as well as marking edits as new posts if they poster elects to (because we don't want new posts with spelling edits)

I find it fine the way it is though.

editted posts would be highlighted as if new But, only off of a checkbox or something. User confirmation. Otherwise, editting a post to change spelling, typos, etc. would show up as "new." So if the post was changed dramatically, it would be marked. I can see this being exploited though. I back off on this one , but a friendly warning would suffice for double posting.
