I am just fooling around right now w/3ds and I am exporting a fully textured example level to .3ds. I then use the 3ds2x command to convert the .3ds to a .x file. When I load the level all textures are gone.

Does exporting automatically strip all texture data? Will I have to manually code the re-texturing?

Thanks

I think this might have something to do with it:

After I export 3ds says:

Non 8.3 bitmap filename [xxxxxxxxxxx.jpg] has been renamed to
[xxxxxxxx.jpg]

1) Is it a problem for dbc that they are jpgs?
or
2) Is the object texture data expecting xxxxxxxxxxx.jpg as opposed to the renamed xxxxxxxx.jpg?

I don't know

Maybe I will just model a sphere, texture it with a .bmp, export it to .3ds convert using 3ds2x, and load the .x file w/the bmp in the same directory to get the hang of it...

search google for 'pandasoft' they have a free exporter for 3ds that exports .x files... and somewhere in these forums is how to set it up for animation... i use this on my stuff... never really had a problem with it.

.3ds files dont support textures, u have to use .x so as Rage says get the panda exporting plugin.
