way to often, recently had to formath 2 computers in 2 days >_>

Quote: "Quote: "being 4 people in a family sharing internet?"

Doing what? General web browsing uses only a comparatively small amount of bandwidth.
"

two of us, talks on skype (that i might add, uses a quiet a bit of brandwith) and play online games on a daily basis

the other two mostly just surfs and plays facebook games.

Quote: "Neither really require the kind of high speed connections available today (40mb+). For games it's more important that the quality is good, and the latency relatively low. Streaming music doesn't require a whole lot of bandwidth."

Did i mention i play games, surf, listne to music and talk at the same time?

and no, we probably dont use all the brandwith, but we got it since it isnt overly expensive, AND we share it in 4, thus we can all do whatever the heck we desire without needing to care for the others

That's like "Why do need a car that does 160MPH!" and I have to counter with "Why do you need a four carrot diamond!" OK, that's my problem but....

Because you can?

Anyway, I like to watch TV or movies on Hulu and often have a download going at the same time. It's called work/play or multitasking. If I had a better connection I'm sure I could find more to do a once.

Since when is internet required to be for "browsing".

When I had skype, running netflix made skype work like crap. There's also other things people can do with the internet, for example, vpn into a company computer to work from home, stream high quality video and music, not just 128kbps but perhaps 1mbps or higher streams?

As some said, OnLive needs at least 2mbps links to be decent. Add in a couple people wanting to play/stream at the same time and you can see where more bandwidth would be nice.

Games require low latency, yes, but some actually do need substantial bandwidth as well. Is there some law against playing those games?

How bout you go back to your 56k dialup connection and leave more bandwidth for the rest of us

Hang on, what? I think you have the wrong end of the stick, I have nothing wrong with people using high speed connections (would would anyone?), I was wondering why people think they need a 50mb line when a 10mb line would do just about everything they need. Apparently Daniel TGC is the only person here who isn't fooled by marketing. Reminds me of those Intel ads a few years ago that informed you that due to the processor being dual core, you could read e-mails and download files at the same time.

Well that's totally not the poorest response I've ever seen to this question.

Quote: "Did i mention i play games, surf, listne to music and talk at the same time?"

Sounds a bit suspect, since I've never been able to play a game while simultaneously surfing the web, let alone do that while listening to music AND talking to someone. But fair enough, that would use a fair amount of bandwidth. Nowhere near even the limit of a 10mb connection though.

As I said before, I agree that video streaming requires quite a lot of bandwidth, and that's probably one of the few real reasons to have one of these high speed connections. OnLive too, although that's a really specific exception since it's not widely used yet.

... Maybe I'm actually poking at the huge amount of pirated material that we no doubt all download on a daily basis.

Ah, that makes more sense. I've never been able to do this since the switching takes forever on my stone-age PC.

Weirdly enough, I play online games and watch TV at the same time, say if playing an MMORPG and doing some quite relaxed stuff - my internet isn't good enough to stream TV on my XBox and play an online game on my laptop at the same time, particularly if somebody else is on the net. So instead I stick a DVD on.

Skype + multiplayer game is perhaps sensible because the multiplayer game you're playing might not have a voice feature. I don't struggle on Dungeon Defenders and voice chat when playing with friends, so you don't need a massive download rate. I guess there's games out there that require a greater bandwidth than DD.

Skype + Multiplayer + 1080p NetFlix + Brother using 1080p Sky OnDemand + Dad watching dirty things on the net then ultimately, you'll need a good connection, especially if the modem is in the dad's room and your brother's XBox keeps stopping to buffer.

Difficult to get a representative number because PlusNet are crap and throttle everything to hell.

Can normally get to ~12 on a good day (which for Durham is pretty decent, it hasn't got very good telephony or cabling unless you're on fibre)

I find it annoying to have to wait 7 hours to download a single game from Steam. I also find it annoying to take ~10 hours to download Visual Studio from DreamSpark. Plus it's nice to have the bandwidth to be able to have streaming music playing at the same time as doing those other things.

Honestly, it's more of a time versus convenience thing. I could live with a slower internet connection but it would take more time to do certain things. So I pay more per month to get that time back.

EDIT: And even with this download speed, YouTube *still* needs time to buffer.

Long downloads don't bother me at all. I've usually got so many things to do I don't worry about having to wait 7 hours for something to download That said, I use QoS to resolve a lot of bandwidth contention issues too.

I used to have 20meg broadband from Virgin Media, but this week got the free upgrade to 60meg and it all seems good at the moment, the new Netgear 'super' modem/router is great.

Since dropping Sky and switching to BT...it's actually better. But we get terrible internet here. Still, at least we're on top of the list when BT Infinity comes to our village...dunno when, I mean it took quite a while before Broadband came here, whilst everybody had highspeed 256kbps broadband we still were on Dial-up! Still, I'm lucky because my uncle is still on dial-up as he lives in an awkward spot of the country.

I miss my University internet (heck, even the internet we had when we rented a place)

I'm pretty impressed with Comcast, they've upped their game in the last year or so.
