I hate it so bad too. I mean it was buzzing here a few months back. Now it's very rare that anyone posts anything! I would post some stuff on my own but there's not much of my own to post, really. Used to, there were some real aspired beginner artist that would come and post questions, now they just sorta keep to their selves. Guess I scared them off

I think I'll create a thread for my 3D stuffs for Unity instead of using the 'What are you working on?' thread. Well, I will once I've made progress, but first things first, I'm gonna take a stroll.

I actually thought it was for one of the programs although from time to time I have flicked through them and just gawked at the models people have bee creating without a proper thought of what it really was for. Although there were people in there showing of their modelling skills.

Now I'm back playing with Max I might end up starting a thread there too once I've got a few done. I especially like the spline editing and boolean operations in Max. I'm quite apt with Max with using it since version 3.1 so I may even be able to help one or two out from time to time. Just so long as no-one asks me about rigging, cos I still ain't got a clue.

There's probably some seedy hidden rooms around here were people hide out too just for their privacy away from the Geek Section...

Nah, it's just for us artists. I'm pretty sure if it weren't for the 3D chat board, I wouldn't be nowhere near as good as I am with Blender now! It usually has a great community of regular visitors but most of them seem to have disappeared.

Yeah, I wanna kinda transfer my 3DS Max skill over to blender, but the interface is so awkward so far. Max makes modelling so much easier (if you know it). And I haven't the patience to watch Blender tutorial videos which are 20 minutes at a time where the screen is still for 5 minutes at a time while some one waffles on and on.

I found it hard to get along with Blender's interface, then when the new interface was released, even an option to make it like Maya's...I STILL didn't get along with it. I almost resorted to using it, but I found my Carrara disk, which I had idiotically misplaced. So I can use a neat feature rich application AND not put up with an awkward interface.

How come I find it to be ultra easy to get along with? I've really had no problem with the interface whatsoever! Maybe cause I've never used anything else besides sketchup?
I personally love the new interface, although it took me months and months to upgrade, no regrets here at all!

It's a 100x better than the old one and if I spent time using it I'd probably get used to it, but currently it still feels counter-intuitive to me. I am used to software like Hexagon, Silo, Cinema 4D (though my copy of it is ancient), Carrara and the sorts. Which all work differently to Blender.

However, because I've got other 3D software I can use that's capable of achieving the same results, I don't have to learn to like Blender.

Each time I've tried blender I get stuck even on the first screen. Trying to edit the verts on that first cube flummoxed me. I just couldn't find the clicky buttony thing that says, "edit that piggin box".

I know Max has a lot going for it, but then again it would for the cost of it. I've got the student version of it. But I also believe Blender does what it says on the tin and competes damn good with Max. If I was going to work on something commercial then I'd have to learn Blender mainly because it does stuff others don't. I think the best feature about Blender is its support for umpteen gazillion different formats which would make any game creators day.

If there were simple to follow 'non-vid' tuts then I might take some time learning how to edit that silly box.

All in all, I won't knock it because of it's list of very useful features. It's just frustrating knowing there's a great package there but learning to read and write 'Welsh' is gosh darn hard...

There are other cheaper alternatives in 3D packages, as I've mentioned before I use Carrara and there used to be cheaper professional packages. Softimage used to have a base package, which was more affordable, Lightwave used to be cheaper (I think Modo is probably about the same price LW used to be) and Maxon still does their base package of Cinema 4D, for £650. But the last time I actually properly looked at Cinema 4D was when version 10 was brand spanking new.

I think it is a shame Softimage stopped their base package, because when it came out Softimage was doing a good job at competing with 3DS Max & Maya and offered a cheaper alternative. But these days, besides the mod tool it's in the high price range. Shame because I may have actually bought it. Still for anybody with a low budget they're expensive, Carrara (even the Pro version) is still pretty cheap though and damn awesome in my opinion. Though my version is version 5, so it exports to fewer file formats, I think version 7 has a .x exporter (maybe as a plugin), so I've never used Carrara with DBP, but glad it has a .fbx for use with Unity.

Blender does compete with its large ranged of file formats, but these other packages are compatible with many file formats and have plugins for where there are gaps, but for more special formats, like say, .mesh for Ogre then you'll probably need a converter to make up for it.

@WLGfx I found the Blender For Dummies book quite useful (I have the 2.49 edition but there's now a 2.5 edition). I come from an engineering CAD background so I found all the CGI software very different and very confusing. The book focused as much on using the menus and as it did the short cuts which made it easier to learn and it really helped me to get started with it (I don't like the video tutorials either). It costs about £20 from Amazon and I decided to spend my money on a book to help me learn Blender rather than buying "easier" sortware I would struggle to learn.

Anyone else find it ironic that you're all now having a discussion about 3D modelling software on the Geek Culture board and not the 3D chat board?

As to the original post, I too am a little adicted to the forums and, as someone else mentioned, especial enjoy the locked threads. The escalating maddness and frustration, normally based on some minor misunderstanding, is always enjoyable. Is it wrong that if a certain poster gets their thread locked I go searching for other threads of their's to see if any more got locked?

Although I've got the student version of Max I might just have a browse around for some Blender PDF's. £20 is gas and lecky for us. I use a bit being super-glued to my laptop.

Nah, this is a thread talking about the forum in general. Not just this board. Posting this on the 3D chat board would cause for an immediate locking, or moving.

Nah, nothin' wrong with it! This is a terrific community and most members do nothing but selflessly help others with their problems. I mean it's rare to see a flame war here too, and looking at YouTube, those are VERY common among the wide span of the internet. Besides the rare nub coming in asking for free code or something, this is a very mature community. The very reasons I love this community and continue to stay addicted and post. I do everything I can to help anyone who needs it!

Yup, I just paid my gas, electric and water today (the water bill was about two weeks late). Went online to pay my council tax (2 days late) but got distract by the TGC forums and the TV license is due in about a week (which I'll probably pay late as well).

I seem to recall there were a couple of decent pdf tutorials for Blender 2.5 that were quite good, I believe one was modelling a castle and then there was a follow up for texturing it. There was also a couple for modelling and animating a steam engine.

Edit: these are the two castle tutorials

The forums are one of the reasons I recommend TGC products to other people because I think you need this kind of help / support when using software of this nature.

I don't thing the modeling itself is the problem. I think it's the interface that's really getting them. There's a tutorial on the Blender website that's supposed to give you a good in-depth look at it. I'd recommend that. But now the Blender website is down so I can't get the link...

Oh no, £20 a week. And that's not bad actually. During the summer we hardly use the gas but the lecky gets blitzed. You know hours on end on the computer and having the missus force me to do the lawns. Or £20 could be a weeks shopping at the "whoopsie" section in Asda.

I know now that I am addicted to these forums. I keep coming back every day checking the updates and to see what madness has occurred while I've been asleep.

Thanks for the links to the Blender PDF's I'm having a read through them in a bit to see if I can finally get to grips with Blender...

Not seen you in a while.

And really, there's some really magical and elaborate ways of displaying "Hello World", such as have pixies cheer lead the letters, getting an Oni to spell it for you, asking Thor to write "hello world" in the sky with thunder, kidnapping Chuck Norris and getting him to punch it into a wall, get Benjamin and have him claw it into his scratch post and so on.

So give yourself some credit.

Erm... Okay... Wasn't expecting that over a 2 line hello world program...

Maybe the next comp should be the most elaborate hello world program. And if it's not a comp I'm sure there'd be lots of people throwing their "I'll have a go" code.
