My slow descent. Nissan Skyline GTR R33 owned, then got the Yamaha DTR as my first bike. Sold the DTR when I got my full license and got the Suzuki SV650S. Wrote off the Skyline and replaced with the Seat Leon Cupra R. Then bought a house and had to sell that. Now own a crappy old Passat that cost £1200.

My advice to youngins. Spend it while you got it!

Ahem. Yep, a brilliant car. Perfect in every way. Buy one you won't regret it. Don't test it out or even get in it first though. I have no doubt it will be brilliant. In an unrelated incident I am moving back to Cyprus next week. That's probably about 2500 miles further away from you (and a totally unrelated punch in the face) than I am now...

Giggedy. BTW you look like the end of a horror movie driving away laughing happily while the rotting zombies burn in the leftovers of your haunted house... just saying...

It was buying the house that broke the financial camel's back. The bike was cheap and still far more fun than any car I've driven. It's all about 2 wheels!

Now if he'd said the M3, I would've hit the deck for fear of being bashed aside by his mighty man fruits, such is the free testosterone augmentation provided. In fact, I got annihilated yesterday by an ancient M3 (probably Mark2), while I drove home in my Passat. Had it been an Elise, I would've simply followed him until he got to a petrol station, then pointed and laughed as he tried to get out. You know it's humiliating when people make YouTube 'How Tos' about it ...

I was perfectly happy with an MX5 in Cyprus. Everyone I see going by is always a Magnum type bloke (tash and maybe beard from the 80s) with his arm around a bird. Nice. Come back here and (apart from being almost killed by lorries) the neighbour says to the wife "Oh, is that Elise your husbands car then?". MX5 had to go then. Bad enough that the Elise is also seen as a bit of a hairdressers car, but worse when it's seen as the only car I would be driving. Then I got one of the most masculine cars. Stands to reason...

Quote: "It's all about 2 wheels"
I've never been bothered. I'm not stupid they are obviously much quicker, esp for the money, but they have never given me that feeling when I see an amazing car. You know the one that's closest to fancying a bird or possibly an excellent bit of food when you are starving. Phoooaaarrr basically.

Quote: "I would've simply followed him until he got to a petrol station"
Yep. My M3 costs near £80 to fill up now (from about a quarter using BP Ultimate) but my wife reckons the Elise is more like £35.

Quote: "pointed and laughed as he tried to get out"
Yeah I look like I'm being being born trying to get out. Getting in is easy. Basically you lean back slightly then just fall in with all the grace of something large falling heavily into something very low, hard, and creaky. Fun. I've actually broken a phone trying to get out of one.

You helped me come up with an analogy which I think rings perfectly true. Cars are like women in general: they range from a hideously overweight hessian sack wearing gutter crone (2 CV) to the absolutely crotch achingly fine swimsuit adorned glamour model (lambos, ferraris, astons, take your pick). Motorbikes are all Michelle Rodriguez, in various casual outfits; they're nice to look at, but not exactly full of variety, nor the pinnacle of eye candy. However, if you wanted to go out and have a good time, you absolutely know Michelle would be a hell of a party animal, and lethal between the linen every time.

Actually, my analogy has kind of fallen apart. I guess I just have a thing for Michelle Rodriquez. But anyway ... yes, cars can be much more beautiful and interesting, with vastly different characteristics, looks and personalities, and make for much better reading. But, while motorcycles are hard to tell apart and the technology and design is very limited, they just scare the bejesus out of me. I get to face death, I get to overtake everything all the time, I get to truly feel 'at one' with the machine, and basically they offer far more exhilaration.

I used to love cars more than bikes before I started riding, and had no interest in them. And I still hanker after cars more than bikes, because they're far more interesting, but if I was told I could never ride a bike again, I'd be gutted. I wouldn't say the same about cars any more.

I would whole heartedly recommend bikes to everyone. If I died tomorrow riding my bike, I would say it'd be worth it, and I don't say that lightly.

Yep that too. I have a few motorbike friends and the thing that scares me is not that it can be scary going at breakneck speeds (that's obvious), but how scary it can be doing everyday things. So the amount of times they tell stories of near misses which in a car just wouldn't be are amazing. Things like "I was coming to a stop and I just kept skidding. Through a set of red lights on a crossroads", and "One day it just bumped a bit and I found myself almost doing a handstand at 70mph on the motorway. Luckily I didn't fall off".

My uncle was a mad bike fan. Had loads of accidents and would not give it up. He got a Goldwing thingy though to please his wife. Eventually he broke his back (or neck; whichever is more recoverable) and his wife made him give bikes up. He goes to bike shows though all the time and is well known in the bike community. He bought a car instead to go to the shows and got something that was more rebellious. He remembered the good old days of British convertibles and the like. He knows nothing about cars. He bought a sky blue MX5. Went down well when he turned up at the first show

Quote: "He wants both of them, though he favors the M3 more"
So he should! The Elise is an amazing car on the road but sucks heavily for most normal things. Like sitting down. Or hearing anything. The M3 is just luxurious (when it comes to sport cars) and is just as fast to 60mph as the Elise (4.9 although the Elise is a slightly faster model and the M3 blows it away to 100mph). Plus if you are bigger than a gnome then you look an idiot in an Elise. And need a degree to get the damn hood on. And have you seen the boot?

Yeah, you do eternally face death. You can't nod off, like you do in a car. At every junction, traffic jam, traffic light etc. there is someone waiting to kill you. I would say every 200 miles someone makes a mild attempt to end my life, be it changing lanes on a motorway when I'm beside them, pulling out into the road when I'm coming (like that biker advert), or my personal favourite ... getting stuck in a car park and simply reversing towards me, despite how much horn I'm giving it, forcing me to back peddle about 25 meters down the road until the old bat noticed.

You have to roll off the throttle when passing junctions, cover the brakes pretty much everywhere, constantly look for a gap to swerve into if the car in front decides to turn across your path, and look for oil spills, bricks in the road, pot holes, people jumping red lights, birds (a pigeon to the chest at 100 is like being shot), deer (almost guaranteed off), wet manhole covers on corners, other bikers and cars coming the other way overtaking traffic trying to cause a head on ... the list goes on.

But that (and overtaking everyone everywhere all the time) is why there is never a yawn factor on a bike.

Perhaps, but if you use it as your main transport (a mate used it to commute to work half an hour each way each day after he got divorced) then sounds a bit stressful to me.

Yeah, it's rubbish. I used to ride to work at an old job. On the sunny warm days, it was an awesome commute in and home and made it loads more fun (and much quicker). In bad weather it was a hideous though, and I used to take the car. So yeah, I'd always want a car for backup, but we're talking fun though dude! Not boring commutes.

After one more working day my commute goes from half an hour plus each way to stepping across the hallway with a pool outside Aaaahhhhh....

I get your point though. My commutes suck like no tomorrow. On the other hand the back road part of it is pretty good when no traffic (rare). I did though see a bike on the back road once that was actually cut in half on a sharp corner. Didn't see the rider but didn't look good. Balance that up with a Scooby I saw in the ditch further up though...

A backup car is always a good idea, especially if you drive my car. (which currently awaits a $3500 transmission and torque converter rebuild)

When i was aroun 17yo Before i dropped out of driving school back in the states, my roommates parents sold me their old beaten up Grand Marquis with a damaged engine and broken transmission for a symbolic price of $50

Like this one exept it was light blue rusty and it didnt run. I was hoping my friend back then- who was an aspiring car mechanic could help me fix it up. But eventually i realized that its not even worth the troble. Especially when some local douche-bags sliced all the tires.

I decided to buy a moped instead and dropped out of driving school. Still for a few years i was a proud owner of a grand marqus before there was a house fire and the car burned down along with the house.

When i get around to it, i wanna try a driving school again here in russia (there is a driving school just across the street from my apartment)

My affordable dream car would be this

The one and only reason i love this car is because of how awesome it looks. This is like the soviet version of a Grand Marquis. and i generally like 70s-80s american cars but they are impossible to get in russia so this soviet 80s luxury sedan is the next best thing as it has the looks. The models of this car that came later in the 90s made the design insanley ugly. The company that makes these, stopped the production of luxury sedans and started selling trucks and vans instead. The last few good sedans they made in mid-2000s rivaled BMWs and Mersades at the time but they were so expensive, to make and not enough people bought them for the company to afford selling them cheaply. I am so saddened by bad outcomes of really good things that would be amazing but couldnt make it in certain economic situations.

Also, It might not even be a good idea to even get a car unless i have a guarage with heating (and i dont) the climate here especially in the winter is very abusive to vehicles. Most cars dont last longer than 5-10 years, The horrible roads, Chinese counterfiet parts, obnoxios amount of dirt, potholes and mud puddles can beat up your car really bad. Also considering that its impossible to keep your car clean for more than 2 days, most people dont have time to clean their cars, and eventually rust starts to develop.

This was my very first car when I was 16... a 1960 Ford Econoline truck converted to a hot rod by my uncle. It was pretty dangerous.

Now I have a more reliable 2010 Toyota Corolla S, which has been very good to me during my experience of moving between US and Canada. There are a bunch of other cars inbetween.

And this is what I had before that. Subaru Impreza turbo nutter effort. Massively fun and if you could keep up with it on the back road and weren't a pro racing driver or in a similar car that sticks to the road like mustard then I would be very impressed.

And finally my first car. A Peugeot 405 SRi. Excellent little car that one and paid for with 3 months of overtime in Dubai I took a long time looking for a car and really wanted a Ford Escort XR3i. But this, it turned out, was faster, had more mod cons (rear electric windows!), and was much cheaper insurance (a lot of proto-Chavs drove XR3i's). In the end I so loved the spec of the 405 that I loved the look of it even. Funny how that works. I mean look at it. It's as square as you can get...

http://ixeelectronics.com/Cars/index.html

Ahh! A thread on a Brit website about cars! I wouldn't mind hanging out with Mr. Clarkson for a day at the test track....

Have a few vehicles I've bought over the years. Nissan DesertRunner with added supercharger, Toyota pickup, 300ZX (Z32), and *cough* Toyota Prius *cough*. I like to burn dinosaur bones but the other cars are gas guzzlers so I ran the numbers and added the Prius to my collection as my daily driver. Luckily I creamed a deer on my morning commute to work years ago and left the big dent in the hood as a silent answer to those...people...who ramble on about driving them to save some Earth Mother or gnat.

For some of you outside the US or back east, the Toyota is supposed to look like that, it's for desert racing.

I threw in the last pic since this is a programming forum. When I used the truck for driving between CA and NE (about 1500mi), I had installed a mini tower and LCD into the DesertRunner along with an HF radio paired to one at my house which mysteriously happened to be interfaced with the internets somehow. Thought y'all might have appreciated that

Edit: Also forgot the Puch and Peugeot mopeds I picked up from a fellow military member returning from Germany. Here's a pic I found on the internets of the exact model Puch I had:
http://www.oddjobmotors.com/puch.htm

I wonder who has the highest cylinder count per capita here on the forums. Mine is currently at 32/person.

Kinda related to this:
