Hi everyone,

I've recently started playing minecraft and got rather into it. I was thinking I could have a go at making my own version for a bit of fun as it would be quite an interesting set of algorithms where I dont need advanced graphics to make it fun.

I was wondering if anyone could explain how the world creation of minecraft works. I imagine it would be a fairly simple algorithm using ALLOT of recession, but I'm not sure.

If anyone could explain or if anyone has a link I could reference that would be great! (I have done a quick google search but no luck).

Thanks!

Yes, few people know that minecraft is the cause of our economic troubles.

Notch has written some about it. He said (as I recall) that it took a long time to write, and once the algorithm was done, it took a long time to tweak the input values so that it looked right.

Cheers comet, I've replied through mail.

If anyone has a explanation it would still be very much appreciated!

Thanks

Ah, recursion has always fascinated me... I still can't comprehend how it's so useful in certain algorithms! I saw this interesting example on Wikipedia:

Um, I think it is done in squares of terrain, each made with it's own part.

Hah, my signature is meaningless.

For being a game where everything is generated from scratch except textures, and you can modify the whole world, it looks awesome. Especialy with a texture pack.

I'm sorry, what did you say?

Besides, since when do graphics define how fun a game is?

Most crude representation of minecraft possible. Have you even played it?

The trick is to put the recursion in the algorithm before it recurses.

It'd certainly look better without the total overuse of bloom that the video uses.
