Even my favorite OS, iOS can bug the crap outta me sometimes. I was wondering what bugs you guys the most about certain operating systems. For example, windows and its relentless 'restarting in so and so minutes' windows, etc.

This thread is in no way intended to start any arguments about what OS is better and whatnot, so stay away from that please.

The windows, "Would you like windows to find a solution to this problem?" things are horrible. Also, the whole "My files vs system files" thing bugs me on windows. Especially how sometimes with folder names there's a difference between what programs see and what you see (I had an annoying thing with "Pictures" vs "My Pictures" which I couldn't figure out until I realized they're both the same folder displayed with a different name!)

Also, not showing hidden folders by default, and not showing extensions by default (then you can get weird things while trying to rename a file like website.html.txt)

all problems with windows 7 here.

Another thing that gets me is that windows computers tend to degrade over time ie they just slow down, crash more often, etc. I can certainly agree with the My Pics vs Pics thing. That annoys me heavily.

And it does seem like they think more is better, supposedly the windows 8 file explorer is terrible, it has around 40 or so buttons at the top if i recall.

I just wish windows would run without crashing.

@DBD Each to their own, but I LOVE the new file explorer.

iOs - The fact that everything is so strict. And the prices
100$/year to publish an app is a bit excessive IMO

Windwos - The way it slows the computer down when windows has been installed for a couple of months. And the so called "Security features" (Run as administrator ect). Allso the Library system is realy anoying on the computers we have at school since our accounts are on a server but windows wants to save everything in the "libraries" wich are stored localy on every computer.

Android - "Android OS" process eats my battery. It could be my phones fault but it's anyoing anyway.

(If you look at battery use, you can see how much everything has used up the battery, the Android OS porcess is allways above 70% of the total use)

lack of an open market. ie, having only 2 operating system choices to run the bulk of software products in the market.
[edit]also how much of a pain it is to find and buy computers that aren't preloaded with windows, i spent a lot of time looking and bookmarking any sites i could find which don't bundle windows [/edit]

I'll ageee with all above posts! One thing that annoys me about mobile devices, even the larger ones such as the iPad, is the on screen keyboard. The idea is great but the implementation is pretty bad. I hate how you have to press certain buttons just to get to certain symbols, numbers, etc.

Would you rather have half as big keys and some symbols instead. Even adding the numbers to the first page on the keyboard makes the buttons to small... And I have a 5 inch screen.

I would have thought handwriting recognition would be finally up to the job nowadays, its just a shame the stylus is pretty much obsolete.

The relentless move to shininess really irritates the BLEEP outta me...if I wanted to use an Apple product I'd buy one. Every time I log onto a machine I haven't logged onto before I have to go slam the performance settings to the max to get the old Win95 look then do other things to get it the way I want it (a process I've come to call "un-BLEEPing the computer"). Moving the "show desktop" function to the tray REALLY annoyed me too, as did the way running programs are displayed since Win7 (grouped vs the order they started). Related to that, there's the right-click to open a new instance of a currently running program instead of just leaving the icon in the quick launch area. Also, not much on the OS side, but apps which don't like to recognize common keyboard shortcuts from time immortal. This is just some of the interface crap, not to mention bloatware in OSs (not just on Windows machines) that slows performance and eats disk space.

Anywho, I could go on and on but will end with...GUIs are great if kept in their proper realm but hell if they get to the point they are now. Gimme a GUI like Windows with a nice command prompt at the bottom (perhaps activated with ONE of the Windows keys)...something similar to the old AutoCAD interfaces.

You need to rely on 3rd party programs to break the thing open so you can customise it.

I mean what the hell? you fork out £140 and you get stuck with there crappy UI themes. No, I want to use my own and you should be helping us customise our windows experience for the better.

Start+D has always been faster, but putting the button in the corner makes it easier to click since you can't overshoot it. Or are you saying you'd prefer to not have it on the taskbar?

Quote: "as did the way running programs are displayed since Win7 (grouped vs the order they started)"

I believe it's possible to disable that behavior, but I actually prefer the grouping now. It also reduces the amount of space used by the taskbar which I move to the left side of the screen.

Quote: "Related to that, there's the right-click to open a new instance of a currently running program instead of just leaving the icon in the quick launch area."

You can just middle click the icon to open a new instance. Or you can shift-left click the icon. Ctrl-shift click will open a new instance as administrator.

[Edit]
My main dislike is probably that it's more work to install/build/use libraries than it is on linux.

@Jeff032 the thing I love about Linux systems is the fact the if you don't like something you can change it as you wish and without breaking compatibility or confusing software that expects the defaults. Having the option to do a lot more things in command line is very useful too especially if you want do one demanding task that doesn't need a GUI. I really like the old Gnome2/MATE interface and also xfce.

Totally worth all the compatibility issues and being limited to all those open source alternatives and having to learn command line.

Unfortunately, I've tried Ubuntu multiple times over the past 4 years, and I still haven't been able to get an installation that works as smoothly as I would like.

- At first the entire computer would occasionally freeze shortly after/during I log in.
- The next time, I had to change some settings in grub for it to allocate enough memory for the graphics drivers to work. (Really? The OS can't figure that out itself?) And then it would still randomly freeze, and not only when logging in now.
- Now the internet won't work if I restart the computer from Windows and switch to Ubuntu. I have to completely shut it off, and then turn in back on. Oh, and it still randomly freezes.
