I have an old PC with a graphics card I need to replace, it has an 8x agp slot where the old card was, processor I think is Athlon xp 2.6GHz, the old graphics card was an NVidia 6600, I changed over to macs a long time ago so I have no idea about PCs these days, I need this old PC to run a windows specific program, it needs minimum pixel 3 shader capability.

What are my options, should I run for the most powerful card available to run on 'this' old motherboard, if so which are they?

Or will newer cards run on this old computer? What should I look to buy from ebay to fix this old PC?

*snickers* Wait...you're telling us that your fancy fruit can't run Windows and the program in question?

Honestly, I built my last rig so well that I didn't need to keep up with PCs. It was so bad I bought a new video card and didn't realize they required an additional power connector...so I had to go buy a new power supply.

I *think* you might have to turn to Ebay, but maybe someone who knows all this new-fangled stuff will reply with a solid confirmation. But...if you have a PCI-e slot you may be able to use a new card.

damn, that's ancient. I'd go round a rich neighborhood on hard rubbish day, you'll more than likely find a better PC.

I think you'll have to go second hand, I'm not sure you can still get agp cards on the market.

does your windows specific actually require decent graphics?

if so your probably better off getting a new cheap motherboard too.

There are loads of 8x AGP on Amazon. I'm pretty sure that you can buy any of them, and they will work (maybe not many pixel 3). I trust Amazons star system (so long as there are enough replies) so go for one with 5 stars, and someone says it is fast. My current computer isn't much faster than 8x AGP anyway. I'm not sure about Pixel 3.. that was quite new when 8 x AGP was dying out.

Supposedly a Nvidia 7800GS or a Nvidia 7600GS would do the trick for you.

Radeon 4650 for AGP is the best thing you will ever find.

I'll Agree with charger bandit here, since that was the card I upgraded my system with 2 years ago. Though really, it's old xD.

You'd probably save a bunch of cash by just buying an amd mobo and cpu and using the onboard graphics. The onboard would be hands down better than any agp card, though of course it wouldn't hold a candle to a proper, modern, video card.

A fairly nice amd cpu/mobo combo should only run you 100 bucks, depending on what you choose.

On ebay it looks like cards from geforce 7600 - 7950 to radeon 4670 - 4350 are going in the 15 to 30 pounds range.
