Finally bought a networked hard drive. Wow! Why didn't I try one sooner? I was using an old desktop full of HDDs for file storage, but this is much better, apart from not being as storage capable as said desktop.

No lol. One of those standalone hard drives you connect to your LAN.

Neat. I've been wanting one for a while, but I think instead I'm going to give Windows Home Server a try, looks pretty sweet.

I think he means a NAS. Which one did you get?

Ah yes, NAS. Thanks Phaelax! Pretty sad I'm a networking guy, at least my employer says so, and didn't immediately pull "NAS" out to describe it?

I picked up the WDC My Book Live 2TB. I was actually hesitant because it has one of those "effeminate" names (*utters "it's a My Book and it's Live. And look, it's soooo stylish" with a lisp and wrist hanging so far down it's dragging on the floor*) and packaging so typical of products nowadays. The three things that made me overlook that were that it had an ethernet interface, 2TB, and was relatively box-shaped (for easy stacking) without a bunch of bling and pointless lights. Not too shabby though. Hopefuly they'll still be making them when I max out the capacity of this one.

make sure you pull the drive out and format it first... you have been warned... WDC will not help you... so format it asap... you don't need to pull it out but just remove their security crap from it and also stop using the USB as it WILL break as their externals are crap...

I talk from experience...

I no longer buy WDC products... [well standalone internal HDD's are ok but heck I am on SSD now... OCZ too ]

Grrrr! Thanks for the info. I'd like to have known that before I put a bunch of stuff on the drive.

As for USB...no thanks, don't use that for storing anything other than what I might put on geeksticks.

Never had any issues with WDC drives, but they've all been internals. I'll keep your advice in mind for future NAS purchases. What would you recommend? Hopefully it's something simple, boxy, and not full of bling and wannabe blinkenlights. If it's an Apple product, then never mind. I refuse to purchase anything from them.

I could show some examples but rather in future

If you're nerdy, have some old parts laying around, and have time, you could build a JBOD storage box with something like FreeNAS. As for me, I'll just get the NAS and be done with it.

Concerning WD, they seem to have improved a little as of late so it may not be an issue. Keep it cool (sometimes NAS Storage boxes are terrible at holding heat) and you should be OK.

Brian.

I've used WD for over 10 years and wouldn't use anything else (internals). I've had one external drive, and despite being in an enclosed aluminum case with no fan, it still runs daily for several years now without a problem.

I have Buffalo Linkstation Duo NAS, brand recommended by VanB I believe (or maybe Wolf). Paid something like $240 or so, 2x500GB hitachi drives (of course nowhere can you find the HDD brand they used, I had to open it up). Bought it summer of '09 and aside from a little fan noise occasionally, it's been great. However, the USB (for attaching additional external drive) sucks. The access speed was way too slow, but the gigabit lan was pretty good. Been running it in Raid 1 and no problems.
I primarily use it as a music server with a shared iTunes list, or the DNLA media server. I think it has a bittorrent feature too.
