I would go with programming in general, go for a Computer Science degree. From reading various job applications at companies like Blizzard and Bethesda, it seems that a CS degree is a requirement. It looks like they want to see that you are qualified to program in general, then see if you are qualified to program a game from your own projects and your portfolio.
