I'm tearing my hair out with this! I need to feather an already cut out image in Photoshop.

I've Google searched and searched on YouTube, there are plenty of vids on how to feather but each one starts with an image that is then cut and that's when the feathering takes place.

I want to be able to feather an image that's already been cut out but I can't find how to feather an already cut image.

Here's the image, I need to soften the edges:

Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks.

in gimp I color select a transparent section, invert the selection (which turns it into a selection of the image itself, you can work on that. I may shrink that one or two pixels, invert the selection again and blur it.

It depends on your needs.

recut the object, then feather it again (while white on white is not the best thing for magic wand^^).

best feather-effect especially with fur or hairs, is to do it by hand using fine and small smudge-tool, especially in this case so the dog will get smaller with a feathering, shoulders wont fit anymore. so you can smudge fur out again after recut.

Press Ctrl and Left click the layer on the dog. That will select it. Then go to Select menu, modify feather to feather the selection. Then invert the selection. Then Edit/cut (or use the eraser tool) the selection. Re-select, and repeat a few times, or use reselect, and the eraser tool.

Make a rough lasso selection around it, then look at the top bar in PS, refine edge button, click it, then move the slider edge detection radius. I cut hair and fur out quickly no problem with refine edge tools. You can also feather and smooth and change the offset.
