I rarely get a chance to play games, but I think I'm gonna make some time to catch up on some gaming. I'm a bit out of the loop though. I'm mostly interested in games with unique game mechanics and new ideas.

So what are you favourite games for PC, which are a little bit different, from the last couple of years? Download or boxed or free! Which ones have you really enjoyed, and if I've missed them I'll try and check them out.

Diablo 3 and Skyrim

Skyrim is just a huge free world were you can do anything you want. But what I liked the most of the game is that you can go everywhere you want. Normally when you see a mountain in the distance in a game, its just a part of the skybox. But in Skyrim its part of the actual terrain. So if you want, you can just travel to it.

Cheers

Martin.

The most unique game I've tried is (what is now called) Antichamber. It was originally released two years ago as the demo "Hazard: The Journey of Life". It's a 3D non-euclidian puzzle game. The gameplay mechanics are absolutely brilliant and the puzzles are quite clever.
You can see a teaser here:
http://www.antichamber-game.com/

The original demo is still available here:

---

Warsow is a great free FPS. It's very much like Quake, but with some of Mirror's Edge's "keep moving" parkour.

I have a whole list for you(some are epics like Skyrim, some are quite a bit smaller):
Skyrim,
Bastion,
Braid,
Portal/Portal 2,
Assassin's Creed(the whole series),
and Team Fortress 2.

One game that's really quite different is LIMBO, it's a puzzle platformer that is quite unique in visual style and gameplay in my opinion.

PC games, I've not play much stuff in the last few years as I've mostly been a console gamer. But for 'different' stuff I do have some on Steam and love. (I'll even be a sweetheart and post YouTube links) PC games I tend to play are indie titles.

VVVVVV
Really retro graphics, but it really gives it its charm. The soundtrack is pretty awesome. What's different about it? It really only has one game play mechanic, you just reverse gravity. It's very addictive, pretty difficult, it's a real challenge. The video makes it look easy because he's getting it right. Each 'area' is different and offer different challenges, so it doesn't actually feel samey.

Whilst there's no limit on how many times you die (except on no-death mode) but your high score is pretty much, "can I die fewer times this time round?" I think I had something like 2,000 deaths. It's beautifully (and frustratingly) cruel, I've not played anything like it before. Loved every moment of it. It's a cool game.

Limbo
Another game with cruel gameplay. I think the video does a good job of explaining the game. It certainly has some good challenges with trying to find your way past certain traps. I'd say it's a bit different from other platformers out there.

Dungeon Defenders

You might watch the video and think, WTF WoW? How can you get any less unique than that? Whilst this game can be played single player, but is actually based played multiplayers. It is basically a take on tower defence and can be incredibly fun. Combat is all real time, but you've got to plot out your towers as you would in a tower defence game and you've got various waves of things to challenge you. Even interesting boss fights. I play a Monk, so most of the time I'm at the frontline in battle whilst my wizard friend is building the defences. It takes some trial and error too, but definitely a decent indie title.

Jamestown
Okay, it's a bog standard shmup, but still, lots of fun to play, I mean the story is basically American colonisation...but on Mars - I think that itself should be a selling point.

My next one was gonna be Audiosurf, because it is a great game, but instead, I'm gonna give you Beat Hazard (Warning: May cause seizures). It's an asteroids like shooter, but the levels are based entirely on the music you've selected (so you choose your own music). It has its edge with the music you feed it. It's a similar concept to Audiosurf, but takes a different route. Also, you sometimes get bosses.

But then, you can have Audiosurf anyway (who said there had to be a limit?)

I like the indie games!

Of the last few years?

Blocky: Minecraft (~2 years)/Terraria(~1 year)
Music: The Polynomial (~3 years), Beat Hazard (~2 years)
Swords and Sworcery
Hammerfight (awesome mechanic)
Lone Survivor (hide and survive)
Atom Zombie Smasher (defend/evacuate a city)
Magicka (awesome with friends)
Limbo
Kerbal Space Program (create/launch a rocket)
Space Pirates And Zombies (!) (spaceship shooter/management)
Super Meat Boy/Binding Of Isaac (platforming/shooting!)
SpaceChem (one of the few puzzle games I've played. It's kinda like programming!)

And of course, I'm a diehard fan of the mechanics of mount and blade warband.
Tribes:Ascend is actually pretty awesome with its skate & disk launcher mechanic.

If you do give Beat Hazard a try, make sure that you buy the Beat Hazard Ultra DLC as well. Without ultra, it can get very boring as there's only three (I think) enemy types and two boss types. Ultra gives you many new enemies, bosses, weapons / perks and Boss mode (the best mode of the game).

Portal. You just have to keep playing it, you can't stop yourself. Or Limbo, but Portal is more addictive, and you can get to the end of Portal in a few days.

Diablo 3 is nothing different. It's a stripped down version of D2 with some WoW elements.

Limbo looked interesting, but I haven't played it yet. There really hasn't been anything in years that's looked different in a good way to me. Maybe Spore, but it got way to cumbersome once I reached the space age.

Thanks for all the suggestions gents. I have YouTubeonized every game mentioned to check them out. I definitely have to play Limbo. I remember wanting to play that when I first saw it, but never got around to it.

I'd be playing dayz if I had a decent enough computer. Multiplayer zombie survival with the emphasis on survival. Probably the only interesting thing to happen to FPS in a long while.

By way of demonstration, he emitted a batlike squeak that was indeed bothersome.

I found the trouble with Spore was it was going to be something really awesome and had a lot of potential but they cut bits out and it ended up being pretty dumbed down. Still, it was kinda fun.

The best thing about Spore was the character creator. I've played with that more than the actual 'game'.

I just spent over half and hour watching videos of DayZ. It looks incredibly slow and boring, yet amazingly epic. I'm really tempted to try, though my PC is pretty basic too.

It's a ton of fun but if you don't have lots of time to waste DON'T play it! Also, it tends to lag...

Also, I wasn't too impressed by the napoleonic wars expansion. It's only multiplayer, and the most amusement I've got in multiplayer is running around with bagpipes

Mount and blade with fire and sword, however, has a strong single player mechanic.

The only time I'd be likely to play Napoleonic Wars would be on the LAN or online. At the moment Warband is the main game we play when my mates come round for beer and gaming.

As for DayZ, it looks good, but I may wait until it settles down a bit. Sounds like there are lots of improvements to be made before it moves into beta.

Out of interest, how many people have played Project Zomboid? I've been really put off by the graphics, but if it plays really well, I'd be tempted to have a go.

Dead State seems more promising though. Kickstarter vid ...

hehe. Diablo 3 was actually part of the inspiration for this post. Having watched the videos it looks so mind-numbling-same-old-hack'n'slashy, that I felt another little part of my gaming passion die, and became desperate to find some hidden gems.

I grow tired of hack and slash, there's not a lot to it (great if you enjoy it), I don't mind if it's been done before, but I want something that requires a little more brain power and poses a challenge that isn't just about how many bullets you shoot into an enemy or how many times you stab him with a sword. That's pretty dull (and generally it seems the try to compensate with action shots and cinematics). Though I've not played Diablo III, I've heard somebody say it's a bit 'dumbed-down', which is the easiest way to make me lose interest in a game. I like it more complicated.

Heck, even though games like VVVVVV and Limbo are pretty basic, the challenges are actually fairly complex, at least enough to get your brain chugging alongside your reflexs. And they were frustratingly challenging. It's probably why I love them. I see you're interested in Limbo, I say it's worth the money, but also, I seriously recommend not being put off by VVVVVV, I generally am turned off by games that are 'too' retro, but this isn't one. So the fact I am mentioning it again should tell you how much of a strong recommendation this is from me.

Just recently released and a heck of a lot of fun! Brought back a lot of nostalgia. Only thing missing was the hard drive loading noises coming from the pc.

Machinarium is an enjoyable point-and-click adventure game, and quite recent. Another good game of the same genre, albiet much older, is Beneath A Steel Sky which you can get for free here.

Quote: "Out of interest, how many people have played Project Zomboid? I've been really put off by the graphics, but if it plays really well, I'd be tempted to have a go."

I gave it a try but it seemed to not have a way to configure controls, so I couldn't get WASD working (since my keyboard layout is different). Another thing that bothered me was when I used the arrow keys the character would (for example) walk NE when I pressed up. Felt really awkward. And of course the graphics look really generic, which doesn't help its cause.

The problem with VVVVVV is it's a platformer. Platformers for me are mild distractions which I get bored with once I've got the basics. I played the Limbo demo and that was enough for me. I thought "Cool art style" and "Nice animation" and felt like I was looking at a piece of art rather than enjoying a game. So was happy to finish that demo and leave it at that.

Same goes for the point and click adventure games really. I don't really have the patience for the puzzles because I am rarely absorbed by the story. I think I'm quite picky about the sort of characters I'm likely to want to follow on an adventure. The last story I was really interested in was Mafia .... it just felt really well written, and the main character was really deep, and obviously I could relate to the storyline having watched loads of gangster movies before.

I'm definitely all about the control mechanism and game mechanics. Best example of my sort of game is the mount and blade series atm. It's just so rewarding to perfectly aim and time a swing of your sword as you ride past someone. Loads of different control and strategy elements come together at the same time. Plus again, I love medieval stuff, so it's set in a great historical period for me.

all molineux-games (black & white, Fable etc), he brings humaness, feelings and consequences of actions back into game-business and goes away from the blingbling-brainout and collect-X-for-stupid-reward-systems. big steps into artificial enviroment-control in the future.

I have never understood how people could call Skyrim something different and unique... Sure, it's an absolute epic of a game, but it's nothing new. And to call Diablo 3 "different" well that's just a LOL moment. Diablo 3 again may be an awesome game, but I honestly can't count how many games are just like it.

Anyways... As for my opinion on games that are different.
Dungeon Defenders - Is the first on the list. I have countless hours on this game. It looks extremely cheesy and downright too goofy, but it's absolutely amazing and takes more strategy than most strategy games I've played. I absolutely love this game, and the fact it has 4 player co-op is a gift from God.

Magicka - Not even sure how many hours me and Thraxas put on this one. But for like one week we basically ceased to exist in the outside world. However, to play this game single player could easily be the most boring game ever. Then you add just one co-op person to the list, and it's the funniest most enjoyable co-op experience ever. Unfortunately I found it had no replayability but it was a brilliant experience and I can't wait for a sequel.

Those are really the only two I've got that are different that I've played. I haven't really been gaming at all as of late.

Have a nice day

May I add: Red orchestra 2, while it doesnt do much different - its a nice change to the normal FPS games -> it's much mor e"hard core", you die SO fast - a single bullet often kills you, very slow paced - tactical and strategic FPS definitly worth checking out if you like realistic shooters.

edit: when I say "it doesnt do much different" I mean, it's still a fps in it's core - and the shooting mechanics is pretty much like any other - adding bullet falloff and a few tweaks.

I am glad somebody shares similar feelings on DD. It looks cliched and nothing special and single player is actually pretty boring, when I get to play with friends, yeah, a gift from God as you say. I've not played it in a while though, there's some new classes in DLCs I wanna try out.

Someone mentioned Tribes: Ascend up there. I spend way too much time playing this game . Talk about unique mechanics - an older game in the Tribes series had a prominent bug that allowed people to frictionlessly "ski" across the landscape at high speeds. So for T:A, they took that "feature" and built the game from the ground up around it. Really fun stuff.

I dont really consider it to be unique, but lately i've been playing alot of "Dynasty Warriors Online". It is very similar to the console games but the main highlight is PvsP combat (4vs4), which offers a much bigger challenge than most other hack and slash games. Its alot of fun once you get the hang of things, and I must admit its quite satisfying to defeat another human player lol. The weapon selection and diversity of the attacks and tactics make the game alot of fun, you can never be sure what you are about to go up against.

Proteus, Lone Survivor, Sword & Sworcery, Atom Zombie Smasher, SpaceChem, Offspring Fling, Endless Space, Desktop Dungeon, Super Hexagon, everything on freeindiegam.es.

If you have a few Xbox controllers, grab 0Space.

Antichamber is bloody briliant, by the way. I've played it a few times and I can't wait for Alexander to finish 'er up.
