A cheap trick would be an invisible player and walls with 100% reflective surfaces, but that won't work in most situations.

EDIT:

Now I see what you mean... Northern_Fist's post makes more sense. I thought you meant a confined area with seemingly limitless boundries, as seen with Neverwinter Nights.

And were it not for the newbie, all you veterans would seem as new as they do.

There is a way. It is called "shift matrix up value". You would do this every time you character/camera moves the distance of a tile.

Check out the Caverunner demo that came with your DB - it has a really good example of this.

ok, reading the help files on that command, i find that i dont think thats what i want.
so im going to rephrase what i need:
i am making a game alot like scorched earth and Worms and the likes. but i want to do it in 3d (experiance with 3d objects, etc) so what i want is to make it look like the matrix extends on forever in all directions (x,z really, not Y ), but i dont want it to really, and i dont want to use background images, so that it will be random each time.

but while writing this, i think i know what to do.
just make the matrix slightly larger than what i want it to look like and restrict the camera from going further left/right than i want. and using fog.

if there is a better/faster way to do this, help!

If you make all your objects real small, and your camera reange starting at 1, or zero (if its possible) and extending to half th esize of the matrix, then, you make the camera restricted to a central area as you said, it'll look REALLY big... just a suggestion, because that is how Team EOD's current project makes the matrix look big (but it's in DBPro so it might not look as good in DBC)

Hope I Helped...

If you use a skybox, you don't have to worry about the camera angle.

Skybox: Inside Out box, textured on the inside, always centred on the camera.
