Not home to test this right now so was wondering if anyone else had any experiences they could report.

I've got an Apple TV (2nd gen) which outputs audio via HDMI or optical S/PDIF - need to get this into my power amp but don't really have the money to buy a dedicated DAC and pre-amp (power amp input is 5-pin DIN) at this point in time.

Does anyone know what sort of quality to expect from the built-in DAC in an LCD monitor? I'm not expecting wonders, but anything comparable to the average mobo's onboard sound would be fine.

The alternative is to route it through the soundcard in my audio rig which has an S/PDIF in and then route it back out of an analogue channel straight in to the power amp - but I'd rather not do this if possible as I don't want to fire it up every time I want to watch a film.

Hmm... I'm likely not of too much help in this area, but the high sample rates and resolutions that sound good have become pretty standard these days and therefore the IC's have most likely become pretty cheap. So I would assume that really any modern sound capable device should put out reasonable sound!

This is all as far as I know, there isn't any research I have done to back this other than my own observations.
