I have to write such a paper for a course and was wondering if anybody had some ideas on a fitting topic?
All I've been able to come up with are various sociological angles, but I'm more interested in and therefore would likely enjoy writing about the technical aspects better.

Since there isn't much time or funds to conduct personal experiments etc. in the field it would also be preferable if there are previously published papers in the field that could be used as a basis.

Pre-emptive flame deterrent: I'm not asking for a pre-written essay, just some ideas since sadly I'm not very good at coming up with such.

I dunno, maybe point to the way games were the main driving force for processor improvement? Moore's Law, the godlrush period of the 90s/00s, various major leaps achieved during this?

This could then expand on to talk about how such improvements gave birth to laptops, the internet becoming more well-known, smartphones, etc.

What do you mean by technical aspects? Do you mean the technical limitations placed on developers and their subsequent effect on hardware development (as CoffeeGrunt suggested), or are you more interested in the technical execution of games: how games work as an interactive medium.

Here's an interesting video about a topic I think is... interesting.

Shh... you're pretty.

I did an essay on the effects of lag in video games and ways developers have used various strategies over the years to overcome, or at least limit, those negative effects.

You could write about the effect of network limitations and hypothesize what multiplayer games might be like in the future if there was limitless bandwidth and developers didn't have to be concerned with limiting packet sizes.

A scientific paper? at what level, and what course is this for?

With respect to the technical side, you could develop and test different algorithms for shadows, maybe build upon an existing one (like stencil)
