Don't worry, you'll never be able to add a lightmap to your level. None of us will.

Max automatically applies new UVs to a model when you bake a texture. I use a plugin called Bakersfield. With bakersfield you can bake with your own UVs

chilledoutjohn:
A similar problem came up with models being exported from 3DS into CShop. The answer, and maybe this'll work for you as well, was that the model wasn't properly tesselated/triangulated.

" texture baking for non-level models works fine in DBP"

If im not mistaken it doesnt matter if a model is a level or not I think what you meant to say is that multiple UVs dont work. Maybe im wrong though.

texture baking is basically rending to a texture. So all the lighting and effects In a scene are "baked" into a map. Especially good for realtime use and static objects.

Texture baking means taking stuff in the level that can affect what your objects look like, like light, and overlapping the light with the texture. So as opposed to having a texture that's just one tiled picture, it's a tiled picture that fades in brightness acording to where it is on the model.
