Never used maya, but a nice way to get nice smooth round breasts is to use a sphere, then cut it in half, and vertice edit the edges onto the torso. A lot of vertice editing would be needed, but it does give a nice natural look. Most womens breasts sag a little and are never as round as Lara Crofts, head on over to Nvidias site and look for the little fairy imp girl model, her breasts are about the most realistic modelled breasts I've seen (not that I go looking for them!), here's a link to one of the better renders.

Well this is totally the wrong forum for this post, but as a self confessed oggler I may be able to offer some help.

I create breasts in a similar way to VanB but instead of manually moving the vertices I use a boolean operation to get it done in just a few mouse clicks, effectively the same sort of CSG that Mike put into DB (haven't played with that yet), that adds the breasts into the chest and culls away overlapping vertices. This is a feature of Max, and i'm sure Maya must have something similar.

EDIT: dont cut in half, keep some of the rearward facing so you can hang them more realistically. Use the vertice stretching tools to reshape the spheres as I find this creates a better effect than vertice editing.

Note that just because women dont have breasts like Lara Croft doesn't meen they should not have! Computers have clouded our view as to what silicon is for.

LOL

Personally I go for shape rather than size - I used to date a girl with oversize boobies, but she was just too small for them, and was always complaining about back pains etc because of her cursed boobs . Plus they sag to the floor by the time they hit 30!.

I had just wrote about 500k's of information but the forum lost the said text.

Being lazy,I'll redirect you to good reads about character modeling.

I personally make breast by first defining the upper torso's edgeloops then it makes it easy to extrude 4-6 times(your take) and tweak/move the vertice around to get it more round...You can also use the help of deformers such as Inflate,Spherify, smooth vertice depending on the software you use.

...And I'm gone...

Make them large, put bones in them, make them bounce while animating (dead or alive style).

If you can give a grown man wood while playing your game, you're doing it right.

Good lord. That would amount to a 500,000 word essay on breasts.
