see my point in russian the description sounds a bit more elegant than in english. Yes Russian language can make a sentence about vomiting elegant. But thats my point of view since i am Russian lol

Quote: " I was also thinking about trying to Americanize it to make it more appealing to english speaking crowd like you guys"

Oh, don't Americanise, please. No need for McDonalds and guns.

I'd love to read Roadside Picnic some day, as apparently that book inspired both STALKER and the Metro book, so it's arguably the spawner of that Eastern-European brand of post-apocalyptic life. Sadly, it's only in Russian, a real shame.

Dimitry Glukhovsky who writes the Metro books, as well as the story for Last Light, said in an interview that he originally wrote it as a book, but when he went to American publishers, they refused it. Despite M2033 selling silly millions, because it didn't fit the tone of what Americans like in that story.

Y'know. Like Fallout. Nuclear war is only a short stumble, and everyone will rebuild and get back to building mini nations straight away. It's hard to play that game after playing Metro, and seeing just how tame and feeble a vision of the nuclear aftermath it is.

I can understand the clever plays on Russian words, and how they wouldn't translate. It's like when I used to talk with German people online, and they would type "gn8" for good night.

It took me ages to realise that they read n-8 as n-acht, and nacht is their word for night. Might seem trivial, but those little, fundamental things require a half-decent understanding of the language.

Sadly the only Russia words I know are "da," "nyet," and "vodka."

Add this, it's known good too:
-babushka
-balalaika (balalayka)
-medved
-matrioshka (matryoshka) - aka MKV
-tovarishch - aka comRRRade

Also, I can't understand why Council converted to Soviet, i.e. transliterated, that's stupid.

Kinda reminds me of a drunk guy I met in Germany last year. He said, "the only German you ever need to learn is 'ich will ein bier du %&*#$&%'"

Which translates to "I want a beer, you $%^*#$". He got me to use it on his girlfriend as well.

Also met a drunk Finnish guy who complained about there being too many Germans. Not sure how Russians and the Finnish feel about each other, I know you've not always got along, you know with Russia wanting to take Finland for their own and Finland helping the Germans in the first world war, but hey, we English still haven't gotten over the fact the French invaded us in 1066, so we wouldn't be ones to judge.

But hey, you guys share common ground:

Talking of Russians and Fins.

I love those guys.

Quote: "In St. Petersburg, in the spring, ice was melting on the Neva River, and crossing the the ice was dangerous. The mayor ordered the police to stand on the banks of the Neva and prevent people from crossing the ice. A peasant, despite the cries of a policeman, went on the ice, fell and began to sink. The policeman saved him from death, and peasant instead of being grateful began to reproach him:
'What was you looking at?'
The policeman said to him:
'I shouted to you.'
'Shouted! You had to punch me in the face!'"

Reminds me of Brian the snail from the Magic Roundabout.

Out of keeping with the humorous tone of this thread, but this is a great documentary by Vice (who make lots of good documentaries) about a deadly new drug trend in Russia: Krokodil. The effects of the drug are pretty horrendous but they only show two or three pictures at one point in the film.
