Disney is buying Lucasfilm, the company behind the Star Wars films, from its chairman and founder George Lucas for $4.05bn (£2.5bn).

Mr Lucas said: "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of film-makers."

In a statement announcing the purchase, Disney said it planned to release a new Star Wars film, episode seven, in 2015.

That will be followed by episodes eight and nine and then one new movie every two or three years, the company said."

More Star Wars, looking forward to that.

It'll be bad, really bad, if Disney make a Star Wars film.

Normally I might agree, but Lucas really only got 3 right IMO.

Also, doesn't Disney own Marvel now as well? Might not mean they Disney-ify everything, because Marvel seem to still be heading in the right direction.

I think Disney do branch out beyond just the brand name, Disney. It's not all Cinderella and Jonas Brothers.

Hopefully they get it right though, but I don't think they could do much worse than Jar Jar Binks to be honest.

What?! How...how did this happen? Does this mean George can't modify the original films anymore? I sure hope it does!

As for a 7th film, meh, there were supposed to be 9 anyway so I guess it'll be cool to see.

One can only hope. But then again, they could just replace the sound track with the Jonas Brothers.

Walt Disney Productions Presents

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII: JEDI AND THE SITH

In a galaxy far, far away...

A tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly

Just a little change
Small, to say the least
Both a little scared
Neither one prepared
Jedi and the Sith

Ever just the same
Ever a surprise
Ever as before
Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise

Tale as old as time
Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange
Finding you can change
Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun
Rising in the east
Tale as old as time
Song as old as rhyme
Jedi and the Sith.

Shh... you're pretty.

This won't make Star Wars any worse than Ep.1-3, that's for sure. I mean, seriously watch the last Star Wars film, it's a fricken travesty and it fills me with hate, everything from the script to the visuals to the direction to everything is bloody terrible.

Disney might show the franchise some respect at least, you don't see Disney doing anything to their old classics except try and bring them back. Remember, Disney made the only decent Jack Black film, Nacho Libre - I'm not assuming anything about this, I'm just glad someone prised SW from his greasy, gnarled, nostalgia hating, CGI circus loving hands. With Lucus, StarWars is a decrepit old prostitute who'll do anything for your loose change, now, well StarWars might actually have a future.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

Yeah.. I don't mind the idea of somebody else taking over, but aren't that invested in the whole thing. There's bound to be more fertile minds out there. Wouldn't wish that job on anybody though Since nothing will ever really satisfy the die hard fans.

It's too early dismiss Disney, even if it's easy to be somewhat pessimistic, given their recent form of ringing the neck of every series.

I'm very protective of my precious Star Wars, but Disney aren't all that bad. It's not all children's films are Mickey Mouse. If you've ever watched a film with a Touchstone logo at the beginning, that was a Disney film (they don't own Touchstone, they are Touchstone, it's just a different name). And they tend to be alright.

I dunno, there's been a big reaction to this on the net. They'd have to be stupid not to make it really good, and even stupider not to realise the prequels weren't that popular, so at least make it better than those.

A 4 billion dollar investment in a franchise is pretty well invested, I'd say.

Disney does such a fantastic job with pretty much any franchise I'm very excited.

Gotta ask, does Lucasfilm hold the I for Star Wars, or is it Lucas himself?

Cos I remember hearing about a famous case of Fox allowing Lucas to keep the IP rights for SW. Just wondering how that would've worked out.

I'm actually quite excited about this. As horrendous as episodes 1-3 were, I think it's a great thing that another episode is going to be made under different people. Lucas may have gotten the first three right, but utterly failed the 3 prequels.

Although.... 4 billion dollars! Damn lol. They better make several more Star Wars films to really make their money's worth.

Words cannot describe my Greatness... But I'll give it a shot.

I am awesome....... Yeah, that works.

I agree. I really want to see this happen now. Waiting for KH3...

----------

Not sure what to think about this. I remember watching the first star wars movies when I was really young (about 4 or 5). Favorite character was Darth Vader. When the first movie came out I was still a kid and didn't really mind it. I didn't care for the second one. I only saw the third one because I wanted to see Anakin's transformation to the dark side. Still, that was a while ago and it wasn't really something I cared too much about.

I just hope that Donald Duck doesn't come barging in...

And this comes to mind:

I was really hoping after clone wars are done Lucas would work on the next animated series- the adventures of Boba Fett and friends! well thats not what its really called it was suppowed to be called "Bounty hunters" Infact he already sortof began doing it as i notised that every season the last 2 episodes are almost always about bounty hunters.

anyway i am at least glad to hear that lucas will still be the creative advisor meaning he will still have some influence over star wars franchise.

Also just wondering why people hate SW episodes 1-3 in my opinion, they were pretty good. Maybe i tend to overlook stuff that was actually terrible about the movies but just wondering if the hatred for the new episodes is based on certain examples or is it just the nostalgia syndrome? Because i too tend to like the first things more than the sequels.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

the last 3 were already "disney" and they've always had a connection so, it's "natural", to me. generally, "it can't get any worse with disney" is my immediate opinion on the matter regarding the future of star wars.

and, don't forget the ILM aspect. (check their website and hover over the various slides on the home page. very cool ) i'm curious to see what comes of it, now. i know, locally, we here in the SF bay area are pretty happy about it. (similar to disney's acquisition of pixar for 7.4 billion in 2006)

finally,

Lucas had very little to do with the original trilogy being any good. If you hate the prequels and want a laugh, these reviews are hilarious:

(There is a lot of swearing and black humor so turn the volume down when grandma comes by)

Mr. Plinkett's Star Wars Episode I Review

Mr. Plinkett's Star Wars Episode II Review

Mr. Plinkett's Star Wars Episode III Review

For a more educational side of things, these "filmumentaries" are interesting and show how the originals were really created, what the original ideas were, etc.

Star Wars Begins

Building Empire

Returning to Jedi

I sure hope he scrutinizes that 4 billion he donated to charity so that it's not a total and complete waste.

I think it's great that he's given a substantial amount of money to a good cause but don't fool yourself that there's anything honourable about it. He's still a billionaire with a huge income, he has sacrificed nothing. If there weren't such a disgusting wealth disparity in the world we wouldn't need to rely on donations from billionaires, like Lucas and Gates, who at least have a moral conscience.

Disney also owns Miramax, and I don't think any of their films are Disneyified. They're just big media investors these days, they are filthy rich after all.

As for Indi, I don't think there's anything more that could be done with the movies without ruining them more, at least with Star Wars there's a whole mythos and history and a lot of ideas that can be explored.

I think they'll do a great job. The thing is whoever they get to make Episode VII is going to be someone who grew up with star wars and will be passionate about it. (To use the most over-used word in existence.) They know what they're doing and they know how important this is, if they don't get it right first time they might have wasted all that money.

I'm actually excited about this move. In my opinion the franchise really wasn't moving anywhere, when it really had the potential to.

Maybe we will get a Jedi Knight 4 game out of it ...

That's good to hear. In the Jedi Knight 3 game you are a student that is part of the new jedi order that is being rebuilt by Luke Skywalker.
I was thinking they would do something along those lines.

Jedi Knight Academy is one of my all time favorite games, probably my top 3 Star Wars games. It be cool to see the original cast back in the roles that made them famous, even if it's an older version of themselves. *crosses fingers for a good script and dialogue*

I was more of a "Knights of the old republic" guy, but yes - jedi knight academy is amazing, played it a lot when I was younger.

I do wish we had more shooters though - i know there's one in the making, but ever since the squad based one, it's been quite on the FPS front of starwars :/
