Hi there, fellow forumite's. Although I used to be a Windows 8 hater, I now have fallen in love with it. It and I are (perhaps) destined for a romantic life of computing together... Anyway, I was wondering, if I were to install it on a pre existing OS, would all of my old files remain? Or would I need to transfer stuff via a flash drive? Also, would I be able to set things up such that I could choose to dual boot to either Windows 7 or 8? And finally, the big one, development. How is development for the average hobbyist on Windows 8? I hear DBPro does not work on it. This brings up more questions about compatibility. Anyone have any recommendations they'd like to give me? Thanks!

1. If you install it over an existing Windows 7 install all your files will remain.
2. You can partition a drive to host another OS to dualboot if you wish, yes.
3. I do all my development on it so far with no problems
4. But I think I am going back to Windows 7 because I miss the start bar...

I enjoy food quite a lot.

Well perfection! Precisely what I wanted to hear! I think updating to Windows 8 will be an activity of mine in the near future. Thanks!

I can't seem to even install Windows 8 on my main machine. It shows an error message for a split second before resetting... I looked online and they specify BIOS changes that have to be made. Problem is I can't even find the stupid options in the BIOS to change Argh!

Ta da da da... Da da da . Dadadadadadadadada daaaaaaaa!

Thumbs up if you know the tune...

Jeku

Go back into the install disk by pressing anything to boot from the cd and then realise that your hard drive went offline... Select any and fiddle around and Windows 8 will tell you that you need to make the drive online... Do so and do not continue simply click the X and restart...

EDIT

LMAO GOOD THING I POPPED BACK IN HERE ON DESKTOP ...

There is likely going to be more typos in my posts again, because I am using my phone again to keep track of the forums during the day while at my shop... I need to stop spending 2 hours a day every night on the forum need that time for studying, been playing FFVII at the shop though ...

EDIT

I am having to dual boot soon so I may perform another format and get both 7 and 8 running side by side, I need Win7 to do my video editing as all my video editing software died on Win8... and my flashy new webcam, chooses not to allow me to record in HD aside from Skype and stuff...

My wireless adapter died on Windows 8. I use ethernet so not really a problem.
But I can see it being annoying in the near future. (No Windows 8 drivers for it yet)

Why do so many people listen to what he has to say... If you listen to one persons point of view... Please keep it to yourself and try the bloody thing before following another or voicing your views... It is excruciating to see nay sayers and haters holding back progress... Nobody complains that pretty much every six months Apple kills off previous support or such (point of view understanding regarding Apple dev stuff) so... Try Windows 8 and as it just launched... There is naturally some tid bits that need ironing out... As when XP came out and as with when Vista came out and as with when 7 came out... It is not completely the OS to blame... It is software devs and a new platform... I understand That pompass is on about the store thing and the Modern UI... But Windows 8 is more than just that...

Not hammering you Mr Handy... Just annoyed at that view point and the fact your single reason was some pompass prick... (mod edit where needed - but that struck a cord)

Hope that balanced out the pointless link above...

Funny thing is it is mostly non-Apple users who do the complaining...

My Windows 8 install went through okay minus the BSOD I got halfway through. Restarted and it acted as if nothing happened.

I do not follow, you would rather spend double on a computer? and forced in what way?

Either way I am happy with Windows 8 everyone else on a limiting system can keep their overpriced jollies, I like a sense of adventure as predictable, is something I am not

EDIT

Mind you I still use Windows 7 for legacy support of course

Yep, I've noticed that. I suspect it'll be the same with Windows 8. Granted different things appeal to different people and you don't have to like certain operating systems. There's a lot of snobbery in the geek community and plenty of close-minded attitudes, the irony is, generally the same people who show a distaste to annoying Apple fanboys for their snobbery display the same level of snobbery against Apple products and anything that isn't marketed to hardcore PC users. The main complaint of Win 8 has been the interface, to be fair, I was worried if it was a gimmick and something not very mouse friendly.

But generally I've found said people unwilling to try new things and tend to take other people's word for it that something is crap, often get their facts wrong and won't take people's word for it when they comment that something is good, especially if it's not the general consensus.

In all honesty, I was expecting Windows 8 to be crap because of the build up to it and all of the things I had heard about it, why did I upgrade? For £25 it was worth the punt to give it a go and if I didn't like it I could get Windows 7 back. I was pleasantly surprised. When somebody told me Internet Explorer 9 was a stable IE and was a viable option as a primary browser, I found it so hard to believe that I tried it to prove them wrong to find myself being proven wrong. The only reason I'd use Chrome/FF now is for its WebGL & HTML5 support, but it's very rare for me to need it.

If I didn't have an open minded approach to technology, I'd hate Microsoft products as a whole because in the past I have had some really bad experiences, yet these days I'm loving them more and more, enough for me to throw away the idea that I'd get a decent Mac Desktop, in fact, I am pricing up a decent PC desktop instead. I might even get a Nokia Lumia Windows 7 (or 8) phone instead of an iPhone or Android phone.

So to my mind, folks who bash things before even giving them a chance are missing out on a number of things they could well come to love. Heck I even watched Twilight and read the first couple of chapters, it was painful, but at least I knew I hated it.

Also, people seem to hold XP out to be the best of MS because it seems to be the beacon of stability, but what people forget is that on release XP wasn't very stable, for some folks it was, but for me it was an absolute nightmare and I know others who have had the same experience. My nightmare ended with SP2. For some Vista was a nightmare, for me it was about as stable as XP SP2, but just bloated (which is why I hated it). 7 & 8 on the other hand, yes, like previous OS's, they have their issues, but IMO they've done a lot better than previous MS OS's in the past. I ran the 7 BETA on my Vista laptop and it ran beautifully. Windows 7 and 8 are what have put my faith back into MS, from what was an OS choice because it was what was available it has become an OS I like using.

In terms of backwards compatibility? So far I've found Windows 8 to be doing a good job. Love how games like Final Fantasy VIII run perfectly straight out of the box when previously it required tweaking. I've not tried all my old games yet, but I was impressed. Stuff that doesn't work? I just troubleshoot compatibility and it works, for example, EVOLVED's Mapscape, it didn't work until I use the 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' feature.

While I agree with most of your rant, 50% of the things I do on my PC involve Steam in some way, and we're talking about Gabe "Steam" Newell. I don't think people shouldn't upgrade, though. I have Steam running on Windows 8 on my laptop all hunky dory like.

I don't want to sound too cliché, but firstly, you need to try it to understand the differences...

Speed/Performance, was one aspect...

Better understanding of advanced hardware such as SSDs, Windows 8 tells me I am using an SSD and maximises the capabilities [At least this is the impression I have compared to Win7 - My boot times are extremely fast!]

TASK MANAGER! the new one is a thing of beauty! I have been waiting for this style of task manager for eons [Or at least since Win98]

For me, Windows 8 [Pro at least] has one heck of a not so well known selling point, and that is Hyper-V! I simply cannot fathom why they did not mention this even ONCE! Why keep one mentally supreme selling point secret is unknown to me... but yeah, there you have it, Hyper-V is one heck of a singular reason to get Windows 8 Pro!

Oh I should mention I had Vista 32bit Ultimate running in Hyper-V [Mind you it can do 64bit too and allocate as many CPUs as your system has] and got 3DWS working, aside from the 3D viewport being hyperactive, I am sure there is a fix I do not know of, but I was able to do some stuff like light mapping etc... but I will just side load Win7 for Video and Map making... Everything else will be done in Windows 8 unless I could find a fix for the issue with the viewport... as VSYNC is not possible in a VM, and so the viewport runs at over 400FPS... [Yup, in a VM ^^] but to save myself £100+ [Which frankly I would rather put towards better uses... such as Buying 3D Studio Max... [eventually lol] I will use Windows 7 until I can be bothered to buy some up to date software... [remember software not working on a modern OS is not the OS at fault, it is the developers not keen to adapt, or just looking for new[old] excuses to make more money for the same product...

I plan to make some "Lets try" Windows 8 videos soon... which will point out certain aspects, changes and also tips on system tweaks and other more Pro things like Resetting your Network card to refresh your LAN connection and speed up browsing... instead of going through CMD etc... [I did this recently just yesterday and vooosh!], So if you have any requests, ask me to make a new thread on the matter and I will happily oblige [where possible] There was some added stuff past this but I decided not to write it here, stuff about Video Editing software having issues with QT...

Anyway, hope this was somewhat informative...

You still get access to Metro and can use Apps. Windows 8 is very fluid when you use it - I have been impressed with its performance so far. As said there's the new task manager. Windows 8 Pro has bitlocker, Windows 7 Pro didn't have it, you had to pick one of the more expensive editions to get it. Windows 8 has a 'Refresh' feature, which may be useful for solving certain problems, basically it's like restoring Windows 8 back to factory settings, removing all of your programs but all your files and documents remain in tact. I tried it and I can see it being pretty handy.

Parts of the metro interface can actually be pretty convenient, you can dock a Metro App to the side of your desktop or to the side of other Metro Apps. Why is this handy? 3D Modelling? You can keep your reference image up without it being interrupted by other windows. Chatting on an IM and watching a movie? You don't have to interrupt the movie. You can work and have Netflix docked to the side. Or have notes on OneNote whilst it's docked and then have MS Word Open in the desktop.

Here is my messenger app docked whilst browsing the TGC forums:

Seems simple, but it's actually pretty convenient.

Also there's the 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' feature, whilst you did have compatibility features on Windows 8, what this feature does is detects the best compatibility settings for the program to try and make sure it runs. It hasn't failed me so far. I've had old games like Final Fantasy VIII and Summoner running straight out of the box, which required tweaking/patching before.

For example, here's Summoner running without a glitch and no tweaking or patching, this game was designed for Windows 98

So I wouldn't just say it's just a start menu replacement MS has done.

Meh.

I can draw under the image while watching a movie and replying to you. Win 7. And I also can do that in Win XP.

And try to run Etherlords (2001). If you can.

Yes you can, I've found the convenience here is that, say, if I am 3D modelling (like I am now) I'll have about 3 or more different applications at once, currently I've got Silo3D, 3D Coat, Carrara, Paint.NET and IE running and I'll be constantly switching between them - IE for my textures, Paint.NET for any tweaks, Silo3D for the modelling, 3D Coat for the texturing and Carrara for putting it all together in a scene. But what if I am working from a reference? Or I am watching a movie? Suddenly the standard windows method is inconvenient, it's what I always used before I upgraded to Windows 8 and in comparison, I much prefer having a Metro app docked.

The Windows 8 way is just making it as though you're using a 5:4 desktop screen and it's using the extra space for a metro app. If you had a second monitor, it's more convenient, but you might not be using one. Plus you don't have to keep resizing every new program you open to avoid the window you want to keep on top. Plus, if I were to hit 'show desktop', my top Window would be minimalized, if I were to use the Win8 dock feature, that wouldn't happen.

I am not saying that it's the ultimate highlight of Windows 8, but it is just an example of what's convenient about one of the interface changes. I wouldn't upgrade specifically for that one feature, but none-the-less it is genuinely convenient.

I dunno, that's all is pointless.

If I am working, I am not watching movie at the same time. I do not squint to look at two windows at once.

I need every single pixel of the screen for the 3D app, so any app docking is inappropriate for artist like me.

Win 7 file explorer is a doggie poo. The best was in Win XP, where:
- I could search files in the way I want; in Win 7 I had to open settings just to change "subfolders" feauture. Or serch hidden.
Srsly, I can't find thumbs.db without additional software like FAR manager, even with "show hidden".
- There were customizable buttons; Win 7 offers me to write files on a CD or share. Complete crap. And it's known issue.
- I had "close tree" button. Now I have to pixelhunt the 3 px border of folder tree to move it.
- I had "recent" folder in address bar.
- I had shown all desktop folders in folders tree, now I cant do that. I can add desktop to favorites but it's don't unfold.
- I HAD "go up a level" BUTTON! I can't forgive it to MS, bread crumbs are slower when you need quickly go up a level.

I can continue endlessly on how bad new OS's are.

And the new OS's feautures are "oh look it has cute wallpapers, aww!" and boot speed boost. In exchange of dozens of convenient feautures. SSD? Oh, my life completely changed with SSD! Pff. Meh.
I don't want to argue, my opinion is interesting only to the nearbly wall.

Only I am afraid that MS will close distribution of open source apps and unsigned apps, like in DBP made. And they sure will do.

The point is you don't have to upgrade, but there can advantages to do so. I think I've said it before, Windows 8 isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea, no single OS ever is and naturally folks will pick the one that works best for them, but for me Windows has improved a lot since the original release of XP. And I would say for me, 8 has been the best release so far, with 7 standing very closely behind it. And the beauty of it is, new software is generally XP, Vista, 7 and 8 compatible. The only programs that'll be 8 specific are the metro apps, which aren't going to interest you if you don't like metro.

As for the closing of open source apps, I don't think MS would be that stupid, they may be the leading OS developer, but if MS were to do that it'd be a victory for Linux, Valve are already looking to start Linux development, Unity is looking for Linux support, the Torque engine already has it. Irrlicht and Ogre already run from Linux and there's plenty of development tools out there and the OS is a lot more user friendly these days.

The only thing MS is trying to take control of is their metro apps as you can only acquire them from the MS App Store. Yes, it's the same thing for Apple's app store and their apps, but you can still develop open source applications for MacOSX and like MS, Apple haven't suddenly shut off the open source community on their OS and as far as I can there's no plan to do so.

Proof?

Anyway, Aside from some applications being incompatible, mainly video editing applications throwing up an issue due to QuickTime... Everything is as it was with Windows 7, oh and I still have issues with 3DWS but that is because of the way the editor is created, I get the impression it is using old technology that is no longer developed and therefore no longer supported... [Some things just need to die off]

I find Linux to be a funny platform, the whole idea was for it and everything on it to be free or extremely affordable, I found out they had an app store with expensive products and could not stop the ironic laughing for an entire week...

Sorry but if people are expecting to use an OS for free and not willing to pay for that... then who expects them to pay close to half the cost of an OS licence for an application?

Also, for someone whining about MS being so bad, Can you look at the cost of supporting an old OS which no longer generates income and see that as viable for you to be moaning about improved products?

I think people really need to stop bickering, stop being so enclosed in a hole and join the world in Progressive improvement... I find it ironic that you find flaws in modern OSs when even the one you are using has plenty of flaws... I have not seen an BSOD since I had Vista... how many have you seen this year?

[The only times I did see a BSOD, which cannot be counted, were when overclocking either the CPU or GPU to which a BSOD can be expected]

Anyway can we just get back on topic as to any questions relating to Windows 8 Installation rather than going onto What What What, I prefer the How How How... and there are so many lovely improvements, and frankly I think Anybody still using XP has no debate over Any OS other than the next successive OS, as that is the closest product after theirs... So, Vista... Can you keep the whining over XP>Vista in relevant threads and I grow tired of people moaning about tiny differences between XP and 7/8... I mean, what are you talking about? the search features in 7 are amazing, and 8 is superb, have you tried copying a whole bunch of mixed files from one folder to the next? when I do say a backup now... of raw files... and I have mixed files already existent in the two folders and combine them... man I should show that in my early videos...

Last thing on the debate I will say... TRY to use Windows 7 for at least 6 months and Windows 8 for the next 8 months, rather than griping after using it for half an hour... I find people that dislike Vista/7/8, have never tried or had like 20 minutes on the OS... or take their views from other BS sources often supporters of other OSs...

I on the other hand, HAVE tried other OSs for prolonged periods of time, I do not dislike entirely the Mac OS nor iOS, I just dislike the way Apple run their business... not to say I would not buy a Mac Mini just for development purposes... I have tried Linux, and can say the most recent build, Mint actually works for once... I could not help noticing how much it was like XP though...

Anyway... I shall continue my lovely day ahead! birthday party tonight and I have some great friends attending!

Sepp, if you were up north, You should join us, there is like 25+ going we are going to swamp the restaurant lol!

Do you like Spicy food?

EDIT

Of course the above is all a matter of my opinion I must mention...

To be fair PC's you get in an office aren't necessarily very well optimised, I use an XP machine at work and everything I do is pretty much done through the internet, sometimes I need to use MS Word or Excel but not often. However, it is pretty sluggish. The PC I had at my last job, well, lets not talk about that, it was a one with a pretty poor spec and it barely ran Acrobat.

The job before that? They were running DOS (I kid you not) and to be fair, it wasn't sluggish at all.

While I like snapping the Metro apps side-by-side, I think MS messed it up by not supporting half-and-half. You can have one app take the full screen, or one take 1/4 while the other takes 3/4.

I can understand why they wanted to limit the sizes for the sake of developer sanity, since variable scaling can be tricky, but it seems like they missed the obvious ratio in there.

That dinner was awesome! and also I got 3D Crafter 9 working

I hope to learn to use it and create some models and animated models too, maybe even rigged? [Still completely clueless what that means but it sounds good lol]

It was actually started as a clone of Unix for desktops. It was created by Linus Torvalds who used Unix at university but wanted the same thing on his desktop PC (this was in the early 90s when the desktop PC was quite new). He didn't have the resources to develop an entire operating system by himself from scratch so he decided to make it open source so other people can help him. Over the years over 10000 people from over 800 companies have contributed.

Obviously, thats not a reason to choose it above Windows or Mac. But it shows that it is a serious OS that can make lots of money (Red Hat makes billions out of selling Linux).

Personally, I prefer Linux over Windows for quite a few reasons. Mainly because it just works, I rarely get any problems with it (I know that some people have reported otherwise though). It also doesn't get clunky over time.

Another cool thing about Linux is you can choose your UI. When Ubuntu brought out Unity, I switched to Linux Mint and all my apps worked just like before. If Windows changes their UI and you really hate it, where can you go?

I have not had much in the way of UI issues... Just old apps using obsolete technologies...

I've been using Linux for a few weeks now, but I'm finally starting to miss games so I'm going to have to dual boot windows.

I've been running Windows 8 for three days now, and I have to say, it's actually pretty phenomenal. It does take some getting used to (I keep going to click the Start Button but keep finding it's gone ), but once you adjust, I swear it becomes natural to use.

It's so fast, too! I've never had a computer that boots up in less than ~18 seconds (seriously, from button press to sitting down, it's already set to go!), and it just feels fluid and intuitive.

I can think of a few ways the new Start Screen could be improved, but really it's more nit-picky than necessity. All in all, Windows 8 gets a 4/5 rating from me. The speed increases alone are worth it!

When I used the developer preview you could stick click in the corner where it was to open the metro thing, did they remove that?

P.s, what are we calling the 'metro thing'?

You can still go the corner where the Start Button was and click it to go to the Start Screen. I just meant I keep looking for the Orb.

AS for what they're calling it now, I believe they just call it the Windows 8 Start Screen/Interface.

They were avoiding getting sued by their own partners... a fail on a German business's part... I think this was a stupid reason for a renaming of a simple WORDED product... I do not see them suing EA for BF3...

As the whole thing did not make sense to me, I simply gave up beyond knowing a German business partner of Microsoft had something to do with the renaming...

I just call it Metro, but it is essentially just a start menu, but a little more flashy than that.

One of the main reasons I am happy I upgraded. The other is ergonomics, I was expect it to only be ergonomic for people with touchscreens and I happy I was wrong about that. I move through metro much quicker than I do on the regular start menu.

I figured out why 3DWS does not work, it uses OpenGL 1.2... I am having a hard time finding downloads for it...

Any help?

@MrValentine

I just went through the install again and found that your advice doesn't really make sense. If I boot from the Windows 8 CD and go through setup, when I get to the hard drive section it doesn't show up. I can load a driver for the hard drive, but I have never had to have such a thing before! If I choose the upgrade option to carry my programs over from Windows 7, it tells me I have to install it from Windows 7. If I install it from Windows 7, I get the original problem. It does about 5 or 10 minutes of copying files, then I get an error message for a split second before the computer reboots itself automatically back into Windows 7.

Hmm, for me it informed me of my drive having gone off-line on the hard drive setu[ section, did you click advanced options? what did it say next to it? Online?

Can you manage to get a screenshot using a camera of the page?

Try switching your SATA ports... also check to ensure any RAID features are not enabled too... and set the SATA bus to IDE not AHCI... or reverse...

Also can you tell us which motherboard you are using, bios revision and possibly a link to the PDF manual or just the model number and bios version...

EDIT

During the reboot, stick by your PC, it should show a boot option for a few seconds...

@MrValentine - I ended up getting it to work by removing RAID 0 from my two 1TB hard drives. That really sucks because I was getting quite a speed boost from having them on RAID 0 (apparently).

Anyhoo, the installation was super quick and so far evertthing works (aside from Yahoo Messenger, that is).

Thanks for the tips!
