I've been watching this on Netflix and think it's pretty funny. I've also watched Fresh Meat with Joe Thomas, and it was pretty great as well. It's mostly interesting because the cultural differences between England and Canada are pretty big, if this show is anything to go by. Are they realistic at all?

Can anyone recommend anything else like those shows?

EDIT: I watched Misfits all the way through and boy did that series really go downhill fast!

Realistic? I think so to a degree. The Inbetweeners was just so like when I was at school. Especially the kid who says he has been with every girl going. When I was 16 a friend of mine pointed out about 30 girls he had slept with on a 5 minute drive through town. And we totally believed him (at that point). And Fresh Meat has a lot of stuff from my Uni days. Love it.

For a newish show try Bad education. It's got JP (from Fresh meat) in it. Give it a show or two to get rolling. The sex education episode is total class.

Also, for new shows, try Cuckoo. It's got the tall teacher from Inbetweeners in it (interesting fact he actually was the teacher of a friend of mine). And the bloke from Hot Rod, which is one of two films me and the wife got together with. Absolutely loved it. Cool beans!

Oh and for older series then I, as always, have to mention the awesome Darkplace.

Cheers

I'd say I've got a mate who's an Inbetweener. In some ways the show reminds me of my sixth form days and Greg Davies does a very good job at representing a teacher, because I've had a few that were a bit like him. He used to be a teacher himself, so I'm sure he knows how to play the role. Also, his stand up comedy is worth watching as he's a pretty funny guy, he makes appearances on comedy quiz shows like Mock the Week as well, which is a series worth watching if you like British comedy (and likewise QI, Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie To You and Nevermind The Buzzcocks).

If you like awkward comedy like The Inbetweeners, you might like The Peep Show if you've not already watched it.

@Seppuku - Peep Show is one of the greatest TV Shows of all time. Please recommend me some more awkward comedies

Cuckoo!? - I watched half of one show and seriously considered giving up on TV after that. I quite like the Inbetweeners, it does remind me a little bit of high school, not much though (unfortunately).

The first 3 or 4 seasons of Shameless are pretty good. Both seasons of Spaced are great too, one of my favorite shows - it's maybe a bit like a more-depressing Big Bang Theory without the canned laughter and a lot funnier. There's also...

The Mighty Boosh
Ideal
Peep Show
Still Game

I'd even recommend Gavin and Stacy at a stretch, it has it's moments.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

The In Betweeners is foopin' hilarious BECAUSE it's so close to reality. I don't know what schools are like today, but it is a lot like mine was, back in the day. Obviously it's an exaggeration but essentially it all happened or was said at my school by someone at some point.

Keep at it. Really got good after a bit.

Hmm, off the top of my head, obviously the UK Office (practically identical scenarios to a period of my life), Alan Partridge, and Coupling had some moments (absolutely *loved* that show). Oh and just remembered Miranda is really quite funny. For really near the knuckle stuff try Jam or Monkey Dust. Or the (banned?) Brass Eye pedo special episode.

Really can't get beyond the trailers for some reason...

Loved that. Helps to be Welsh though. It's like a list of all my families quotes.

You should take a look at Black Books if you haven't already - It's a great comedy from the guy behind Father Ted and the IT crowd.

Never really got into Black Books but Father Ted was sheer genius and as about as irreverent as it gets, RIP Dermot Morgan.

Black Adder 2-3.
Little Britain.
Still Game.
Fawlty Towers.
Spaced.

Spaced, yes, definitely worth watching (for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost). It can have its awkward moments there, but a very good comedy. My friend literally lives around from the corner of that house.

I would also second Black Books (I think it's on Netflix), for me Dylan Moran (you'll remember him from Shaun of the Dead) and Bill Bailey are very funny people, putting them together in one show is worth it. But I think it's one of those shows you can only watch the first 2 series of before the jokes get predictable.

There's some good comedies from the 90's and early 2000's:

Royle Family is good, I wouldn't say it's an awkward comedy, but it's worth watching, it's pretty subtle, but still pretty funny.

Then there's Vicar of Dibley, if you're going to venture into things like Father Ted then I wouldn't miss VoD, personally I always preferred Vicar of Dibley. Both are comedies related to Church, and even as somebody who's not a Christian, I enjoyed them. VoD is a pretty silly comedy, but does a good job making fun of small village Church communities, but in a loving way.

I quite liked Absolutely Fabulous, Joanna Lumley can be quite funny.

All of them are British sitcoms that kind of reflect real life, yet exaggerated.

If you don't already our comedy quiz shows are worth it, not sure if you've got anything similar in the US & Canada, but they tend to be just panels of comedians and sometimes politicians, journalists, well educated folks and celebrities, depending on the show and they can be really funny shows. The comedians who tend to circulate these shows tend to be very funny like Bill Bailey, David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Greg Davies, Ross Noble, Milton Jones and various other stand up comedians.

And what about Bottom? I loved watching it as a kid. It's still a guilty pleasure, it's stupid, but it was fun. I didn't get the same jokes as a kid as I did when I was an adult - I liked it as a kid because it was violent and vulgar. I used to watch it as well as Red Dwarf.

Anything written by Ben Elton or starring Rick Mayall and Ade Edmondson is a winner in my book, those two are working on a new stage show and may even be back on the road now, look out for 'em at a theatre near you.

Who could forget Alexi Sayle as the Ukrainian landlord in the Young Ones? Forerunner to Bottom, Allo' John...got a new motor.

I just recently learned about that show, and it was pretty interesting at first. But season 3 had me losing a little interest, and season 4 isn't starting out so great. I don't like the new characters.

One of my favourite shows of all time. I didn't mention it because I assumed everyone had seen it.

And if they don't bring back Ace (or at least Dwayne) in the latest series then they seriously don't know what they are doing any more. Really best character ever in anything. Except Darkplace. Obviously. What a guy...

Oh and now I'm getting the old grey matter working again, what about Pete vs life? Pretty good for awkward moments and at times can be totally awesome. Oh and Plus One is also really pretty good.

Cheers

I really enjoyed the latest season of Red Dwarf. I thought it was a real return to form. The 4 principal characters in Red Dwarf having adventures. It's a shame there was no Holly but I always felt that once Kryten entered the show full time that Holly wasn't really necessary anymore. There was one episode which I felt was weaker than the rest but on the whole is was a fantastic series. I was worried it wouldn't be good and taint my love for the show.

Back to Reality from Series 5 is still the best episode they've made, in my opinion, and quite possibly one of my favourite episodes from any TV show ever.

I never liked when they introduced Kochanski as a main character and got rid of Rimmer and the whole 3 part coronation street crossover thing is something I choose to believe never happened. But series 10 is a must watch for Red Dwarf fans.

Yep X is much more like the old days. Probably not seen for a number of series IMHO.

Apparently the reason it took so long to do a new proper series was because they tried to make a film for about a decade. They were getting backing from several studios, but unfortuantly they wanted to change the actors to put in more well known film faces. And they wouldn't agree to it. Wrangle wrangle wrangle and it stopped them from focusing on a new series. Damn it. Could have had another 10 years of smegging great shows instead of the indignity of knowing Lister was a cab driver in sodding Coronation street...

It is pretty good, but I always preferred their other show Father Ted. I mean c'mon the Racist episode is like gold. Must admit the Darkplace overlaps (Moss and the Boss bloke) on IT crowd make it all the better for me.

Cheers

My votes/additions:

The Office (UK) **
Extras **
Black Adder
Royal Family **
Black Books
Father Ted **
IT Crowd
Faulty Towers **
Red Dwarf
Spaced
The Inbetweeners (I can confirm this is exactly like 6th form (AS/A Levels) in the UK)
Peep Show **
Come Fly with Me
Green Wing
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Mighty Boosh
The League of Gentlemen
Vicar of Dibley **

Sketch Shows:
Morecambe and Wise
Harry & Paul
Fast Show
Monty Python (obviously)
Harry Enfield and Chums
Mitchell & Webb
A bit of Fry and Laurie
The Two Ronnies
Burnistoun
French & Saunders **

Just some amazing British comedies from the top of my head. I've highlighted the 'awkward' ones with '**';
Those sorts of comedies where you are just dying with laughter and dying because of the awkwardness of it all.

If you haven't seen the Original Office or Extras, I strongly recommend giving them a go.

Thanks so much, guys! I have seen many of those shows, but most of them I've never heard of! Today I dropped most of my cable TV channels and upped my internet to 100mbps, so I'll be downloading a lot of TV shows for sure Legally of course

Quote: "I just recently learned about that show, and it was pretty interesting at first. But season 3 had me losing a little interest, and season 4 isn't starting out so great. I don't like the new characters."

Ditto. The first season had an amazing lead actor, and then he left! He was so funny... I laughed out loud from some of the things he said. But now I'm in Season 3 and it's got way too much melodrama and seriousness.

EDIT:

Oh I just remembered a TV show I used to watch, with the English dude from Drop Dead Fred, Rik Mayall. He was in an English comedy they used to play late at night here where he was absolutely filthy and slept on a couch or something. My memory is foggy, but I'd love to see what that show's called.

And a few years back I watched an interesting show called Max & Paddy (I think??) about two dudes in a camper driving around the country. It was pretty good.

IT Crowd is great but I hate laugh tracks, so I couldn't stomach all of it.

If it's not Bottom (as I posted above) then it's likely to be The Young Ones.

Yeah, that's Max and Paddy's road to nowhere, a spin-off of another great (and sometimes pretty awkward) comedy called Phoenix Nights.

For what it's worth, the laughter in IT Crowd is recorded in front of a live audience, not canned - dunno if that makes it any better

Hmm I'm suspicious. They always say that. All the American sitcoms also say they're filmed in front of a studio audience, but then they also add canned laughter. The IT Crowd laugh-to-actual comedy ratio is too high.

Mrs Brown's Boys, anyone?

Irish comedy filmed in front of an audience live. You can tell because there's times now and then when they mess up, and work past it.

Also a pretty good comedy.
