Wait, Hostess is going down the tubes? Dang, they make a lot more than just Twinkies! I was never a fan of Twinkies, in fact all of their snack cakes were a little on the dry side. There's blood on your hands, Little Debbie!

I wonder if it will affect South Africa. We have Twinkies here too but I believe they're made under license or something. They have a slightly altered name like "Tinky" or something but it's essentially the same thing: preservative-enriched spongecake filled with "cream". Haven't eaten one in two or three years but all this talk's making me hungry...for an apple.

Oh noez! There goes my economic recovery plan... I was going to have everybody use twinkies as a global currency. Well, people never liked my idea too much anyway...

with the Twinkie Defense, their flavor changed (to become reminiscent of cardboard) and i stopped consuming them.

i'll miss hostess' donettes

but there are (way too) many alternatives to all hostess products available to really miss any of them.

for those in distress, you can make your own twinkies which, i'm sure, would exceed the original across the board (minus ease of access).

furthermore, it is fabled that twinkies last forever and i'm sure someone saw this "end" coming decades ago and began storing them inside mountains:

or, within underground bunkers:

...where they wait for the dust to settle before becoming available through black market sources.

This was my first thought when I heard Hostess was going down the tubes. I think it's time to watch Zombieland again.

Anyway, as an American citizen I can assure those of you who reside in different sectors of the planet that most people I know don't really care that Twinkies will be no more, in fact most people seem unfazed. It seems everyone agrees that they were on the dry side and tasted like crap.

Actually, I have had some alter-brands to Hostess stuff and have liked them more. I really won't miss this company at all.

Apparently the one he ate in the movie wasn't a real Twinkie. It was a custom made Vegan one.

You can all start breathing again, the precious Twinkies aren't dead yet: Hostess is apparently negotiating with the Baker's union. There could yet be hope for America.

Fear not! There is hope!

P.s. fear the corn syrup, might be worth trying an alternative like treacle or honey. Corn syrup is pretty evil stuff given the way the body processes it.

Love the intro to "Nicko's Kitchen"!
I'll love to make my own sometime, and I heard the Hostess was not going out of business after all.

I don't understand the point of twinkies. Why would anyone need a cake to last more than a few days? (Apocalypse aside.) I don't want to know what they put in those things to make them last for years, especially containing "cream".
I don't understand why people buy baked goods in packets at all, every supermarket has a bakery nowadays and it's usually cheaper and better quality. Sliced bread is complete crap next to fresh bread and it's more expensive in my local supermarket. That Deirdre at number 42 bakes her own bread, and she never stops going on about it. Well of course I'd like to spend all day baking but some of us have housework to do y'know and we don't 'av a nanny to look after the children. 'Er 'usband's a lawyer y'know, got an office in London 'e 'as, away half the year 'e is I swear, and well I'm not one to gossip but with 'er type...

Shh... you're pretty.

A US bankruptcy judge has given the go-ahead for the liquidation of Hostess Brands, owner of some of the country's best known food brands, including cream-filled sponge snack Twinkies.

As a first step in the liquidation of the company, Hostess is expected to lay off about 15,000 of its employees."

Actually, mass-produced food is usually (in my experience) cheaper, which to my knowledge is the whole point.

I'd say it always is! There'd be no economical benefit to mass producing if it wasn't cheaper, if I am correct.

That's not always the case. Look at canned veggies vs frozen. Canned veggies are often more expensive and way more gross... Though both are mass produced, a lot of deli food is also "mass produced" too. Salads are straight from a bucket or a mix of a few ingredients. Sliced meat is just a big chunk of meat stuck on a slicer. Buns and bread are usually hand made from what I've seen, but tends to be somewhat more expensive and still not as good as home-made!

Anyway, check this out

Quote: "http://www.pinchtown.com/store_canned_frozen_vegetables_cost.shtml"

In general, the price of the deli or bakery at my supermarket is more expensive, but the quality is better too!

@Jerico You raise some valid points! So perhaps it would be more correct to say that although mass production may not always be more economically beneficial, it's still a great way to make more money. Right?

But supermarket bakeries are nowhere near as good as real bakeries. The only exception would be supermarkets who sell Krispy Kreme donuts, which are awesome. Unfortunately real bakeries are dying out, the only one we've got in our town now is Greggs and whilst Greggs is good in comparison to Tescos' bakery, it's nowhere near as good as the bakery we used to have. Same for butchers, though there is a decent (but expensive) butchers up the road who are actually thriving in business.

Nope Neuro, those are not the snowballs I'm looking for - those are soft mallow with a jellow blob in the middle, although we'd probably love them over here as well. The snowballs I'm talking about are really soft mallow covered in chocolate and cocunut:

report from the western front:

massess have gathered before now-empty shelves.

most motionless, unblinking, feverishly salivating from mouths agape.

others fetal and mumbling, "why? oh, why?".

the rest gather in groups of 2, laying side-by-side, reminiscent of the array of Hostess™ products that were sold in pairs.

yet, we are alive. i repeat, we are still alive.
