I currently use Mediafire but people have complained to me about adds, etc.

Am thinking of defecting to Google Drive because they offer 5GB of storage space, access controls (although they're not clear about them) etc. Unfortunately, they aren't very clear about a lot of things so I'm hoping some of you are familiar with the service.

1) Can I share stuff as Public (so if I posted the link here, anyone could download it even if they didn't have a google account) and can I password files? (Two-part question I guess).
2) Any way to upload to GDrive without the "app"?
3) About the app: What permissions will it ask for (before even downloading it)? I don't like apps that run in the background constantly and require forced termination or apps that add themselves to startup (not the folder, I mean HKCU/Software/..../Run). I don't like apps that "report usage stats" without giving me the option not to either as I consider it spyware. Also don't like apps that run invisibly.
4) What are the upload/download speed? I don't know what google's max speed is for any of their services tbh.
5) Do they restrict certain file types from being "shared", for example .exe or .rar?

This is just a second thought here. Assuming GDrive doesn't work out and I consider Drop Box (I opened an account ages ago and it still seems active but I haven't actually used it)....

1) What are the speeds like?
2) Anyway to upload to Drop Box without the app?
3) About the app: [same question as before with the google app for Gdrive].
4) Any file-type restrictions for sharing files?

Thanks a lot for any information. Additional info welcome too, as is any suggestions for even better free-hosting/partially free hosting.

1) yes
2) works via website too (no app requred) (PC and Phone requires app)
3) didnt understood the question.. maybe someone else will answer it >_<
4) never actually bothered to know the dl speed cuz it fits me whell on my phone + pc
5) i think so.. this google drive acts like simple folder on your pc, you can upload anything you want..

about dropbox im not sure..

by the way, i know what you are up to. it looks like you want to build some kind of media storage for your games/apps.
you should look on my AdvUpdater. i designed it exactly for that.

Well, tks for the info Sergey, seems GDrive is at least worth my looking into.

As for your Advanced Updater, it looks pretty good. Nice work! I'll definitely five it a try.

[EDIT] I just tried out Google Drive with some test gunk. Works great![/EDIT]

My college uses GoogleDrive and its very very good. Uploads pretty much instantly for us and you are able to view files online and download them bulk or one at a time. I've used dropbox before and it wound me up to death. I love drive. It truly is the sex of online storage.

About DropBox

1) What are the speeds like?
I think it uses the full capability of your broadband connection, I've never had speed issues with it.
2) Anyway to upload to Drop Box without the app?
Yes, through the website.
3) About the app: [same question as before with the google app for Gdrive].
Yes.
4) Any file-type restrictions for sharing files?
Not as far as I know, that'd be a silly restriction anyway as you could simply change the extension.

Google Drive doesn't have an official Linux client, so that's a thumbs down here and I used dropbox.

That timing deserves something...

Yeah, Google's service really is looking good. Am already getting ideas about editing code on my phone the bus... The floodgates are open now.

Okay, that does detract slightly. To me, Linux is a mainstream platform these days and should be supported by major services. Personally I don't mind as I prefer uploading via the website (why I asked about the app as I like to avoid installing apps - I have a paranoia issue). I can see how that may affect productivity if for a busy environment though.
