I want to put together a website for my class to help them with one of their assessment tasks.

I just want to be able to quickly put something together using a free package off the internet but the Google search I just did threw up so many options.

So I thought I would turn to you guys to recommend one so I don't waste time installing bloatware. I know someone here will know what the best free package to use would be.

I can host it if you prefer and grant full Database+FTP access so that you can do as you wish as well as map a domain to it too...

Otherwise, I believe this will do what you are looking for if I understood well enough...

What exactly is it you're wanting? Like a blog system, or just a plain website? Sorry if I'm missing it here.

I just want to create a website. I can't code in html so I just want something wysiwyg to help me put something together.

A google search throws up a huge number of free editors: SeaMonkey, Alleycode, Amaya, KompoZer, Nvu, Trellian, Selida, Serif WebPlus starter, XStandard lite, Dynamic HTML Editor Free to name but a few.

I thought someone with more experience in website creation, would be able to recommend something which I could use.

Been using it for years...

I can provide some of my client works for you to see to some extent what can be achieved in the full updated editions... I have X5 by the way, I decided to move onto Expression Web 4 and soon VS2012Pro...

but WebPlus, is very good! been using it since 2007 and can pull out a full website within moments... navbars, menus, pages, links, images, graphics... etc.

I never use a wysiwyg editor for web work, I do everything by hand. For me personally, it allows more control and neater code. But I have played with some many years ago.

I think Amaya is free and from what I recall was pretty good.

As a teacher you could probably get Expression for free, and I hear that's a pretty decent app. I believe I have it on my old PC back when I could still get free MS products.

NVU is another that comes to mind, however, I don't really remember much about it.

Or, if you can design it, I can code it for you.

I'd just go with wordpress.com. You probably won't find a better free builder.

Alternative to the blog style format, Wordpress has "pages", which you can link to in the main title bar, so really wordpress can look like a normal site and/or a blog.

Wordpress.com is free, and if you want to pay for some extra features, it's still cheap.

I concur, Wordpress is excellent for creating a site, especially as it's not just for blogs as Jericho has said.

I use Wordpress for my site and it has all the tools I need to keep my content up-to-date and it's easy as pie to use, it's also flexible and you can use HTML tags should you ever need to. I use the front page as a blog but the rest is all in pages (or links to specific blog posts). There's also a wealth of designs to choose from and the ability to code your own. I used to use things like Drupal and Joomla and hosted them elsewhere, but Wordpress is pretty much hassle free.

Weebly
That's what I use for my website. Don't have to pay anything if you don't want too. The editor is drag-n-drop, and you can still add in custom html if you ever decide to.
