A few weeks ago I posted about a bunch of files randomly disappearing from my SSD right in front of my eyes. Now, the whole drive has vanished.

I was working in Photoshop when it crashed with an error, I'm guessing it's scratch disk disappearing probably caused it. Either way, after rebooting it's still missing!

Check it is connected

> Go to Control Panel, Show All Items

> Administrative Tools

> Computer Management

> Storage

> Disk Management(Local)

> Right Click the affected drive if it is there and you should be able to figure out the rest, ensure it has a drive letter assigned [Preferably the same as before...]. if stuck, just ask again

Hope this helps...

Avoid Formatting it of course unless that is ok...

Guess I forgot to mention it won't show up in BIOS, so no need to check computer management.

How might one do this if the drive isn't showing up?

But I've figured it out. My motherboard has four sata2 ports and two sata3 ports. I've swapped cables, ports, and drives. First attempt, I connected the missing drive with a new sata2 cable to a sata2 port and it showed up. However, my system drive on sata3 now disappeared from bios. After troubleshooting, I've determined the two sata3 ports are dead (or the controller is).

Time to contact Asus, this board is only a few months old.

yeah if the controllers messed up it could definitely cause all sorts of problems. Glad you got it sorted.

I can't think of any other name larger than Asus when it comes to motherboards. Personally, I would have loved to stick with Abit but they're not around anymore. And Gigabyte boards have proven more than once to be unreliable for me. I believe this is my first Asus board issue.

I couldn't find the RMA info on their site so I submitted a trouble ticket. I got a response within a few hours stating I need to contact their RMA service (duh), but he did provide the info I needed. So I'll wait to here back and see how it goes. Hopefully it'll be a smooth process like I had with WD about 12 years ago, and not like Seagate's RMA service.

i was skeptical about SSD drives for a long time with the rumors that they burn out after a while but i was willing to consider that since they were out for a while now that issue was resolved. then someone gave me an ssd drive that was broken for me to try to revive.
completley dead, didnt even show up in the bios. the only inducation of it existing was an unknown device that popped up if i try to hook it up via a USB connection. but thats proboly just the usb-sata controller, the drive couldnt be detected anywhere. and now this thread confirms it. I KNEW SSD DRIVES COULDNT BE TRUSTED I KNEW IT! i am sticking with disk drives since i didnt have a single one break for 4 years now.

That would entirely depend on the SSD, mine is working beautifully, and was designed with the fault issue fixed of overflowing...

I have the Agility III SATA III 120GB Which serves me very well, however note this message on the page...

Quote: "
Important SSD notes: Solid State Drives DO NOT require defragmentation. It may decrease the lifespan of the drive. Consumers may see a discrepancy between reported capacity and actual capacity; the storage industry standard is to display capacity in decimal. However, the operating system usually calculates capacity in binary format, causing traditional HDD and SSD to show a lower capacity in Windows. In the case of SSDs, some of the capacity is reserved for formatting and redundancy for wear leveling. Rated speeds may vary slightly depending on the benchmark used, drivers, windows version, bios version and file size. We recommend using ATTO, IOMeter, and PC Mark Vantage for benchmarking SSDs and to achieve maximum rated specifications. Maximum performance is achieved by using the P67 chipset with Native SATA 6Gbps.

I have the same Agility 3 drive, and I'm aware that SSD does not need defragged. I also have a 240GB Mushkin which has been just awesome and IMO is the best one on the market.

Pagan, my issue apparently isn't my drives. So for now, SSD is still safe.

Are you able to access the drive by connecting it to another computer/adapter?

I'm accessing the drive from the same computer right now. I think you missed the part about the sata6 port being dead. Drives work fine using the same cables connected to any of the sata3 ports.

I got an RMA # from Asus. In the past, I've always saved the boxes from computer components, but when I moved a month ago I decided to throw them all away. Figures, the one time I actually need one of those boxes...

Update!

1. I found the original box for my motherboard
2. RMA# only good for 30 days, I'll need to request a new one now.
3. Decided tonight to take when last attempt at troubleshooting.....
4. It works again!

I don't know why, but my sata6 ports are working mysteriously. Same drives, same cables, I'm confused but happy.

Got a new problem now. Up to this point, I've been using the onboard audio. I have an Audigy 2 ZS from my old system I wanted to throw in, but Windows isn't detecting it at all. I can't install the creative drivers because it says I have no device. I don't really have any other PCI cards I could use to verify the PCI slots work, but I know this card was working fine in my old system. I just updated the bios and other drivers but no change. I'm confused on where to start with this one.

Honestly seems like it might still be part of the same problem. Very coincidental that one set of dead ports start working again when a different section goes dead.

Still might be worth it to send it in, else you may just end up chasing problems around the board one after another.

I'm not sure because I've never used the PCI on this board before.
