I have submitted my voice to Google's thingy and done stuff on Facebook pertaining to this! Looks like another SOPA/PIPA style senseless governmental act.

'Cept now it's not just "the government", or at least, you might want to redefine that word. Over 190 governments are meeting in Dubai to discuss the future of the internet, and, surprise surprise, only they get to vote on it. We don't have a say.

They're gonna use every single excuse in the book to regulate and censor the internet. "We need to expand the internet to the rest of the world", "we need to protect copyright", "we need to prevent online bullying", "we need to standardise communication protocols", "think of the children dammit!".

The powers that be are rallying against us. I reckon if we knocked our heads together and organised we could challenge this, but, right now, I just feel like sitting about complaining about it.

think these 190 governments have misunderstood the words "democratic governments" for "dictatorships"...

imagine when it goes into power for whatever they're trying to enforce. Imagine if they censor real life. Kind of like that one episode of Family Guy. lol

These politicians really need to let go. They keep on making bullcrap bills/regulations and when they don't pass it's "OH NOES, OUR BILL DIDN'T PASS" and obviously it didn't pass for a reason. Realistically the only way to stop them and beat some sense into them is to take the fight directly to them. As long as they are not being physically harmed they will sit on their butts and go "i are kingz and i controlz everything lolz"

Oh come on. We're trying to talk with sigs here and you rudely interrupt.

The internet isn't really "free and open" as it is. Google is nobody's friend, yet you all blindly rally against a bill that clearly will hurt their business. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. In this thread, eight people jumped on the bandwagon and only I am playing devil's advocate.

Google is my friend. He streams videos to me, tells me everything I need to know and keeps me up to date with electronic email. What more could you want from a friend wanting nothing in return but for you to look at his advertisements?

I don't think we're jumping the bandwagon. I just think we don't want our internet to look like it does in China, where you can't say the word "police" or "government" in the first place. With the internet as it is now, we can at least talk about it. With a censored and regulated internet, you open a pandora's box, and it's a slippery slope from there.

It's bread crumbs, if changes occur that might impact end users, these will be magnified for the big boys across the web. They know they're significantly more at risk as time goes on of somebody coming along and changing the rules. Hence the desire for 'self regulation'.

The Googles & Facebooks of this world, know that one dark day, governments will start pointing anti-competitive fingers at them. After all, they're monopolies privatizing the 'free and open' internet.

Fluffy Rabbit appears to be part of the Internet populace that only supports a truly open and free Internet, i.e. GNU-style open source. He once complained that a project here on the forums wasn't a real project because it wasn't open source and available for him to create a DBC port of the project.

Here's the thing. Sure, some companies may be the web's big boys. But, as a society, we have accepted them into that roll, therefore creating no excuse whatsoever to point anti competitive fingers at them. If they ever genuinely began to try to monopolize things, then it would make sense to take action. But as of so far, Google, Facebook, and all of the other big companies are some of the least greedy and best carried out businesses I know of. And they're in a market where they could ramp up the greed as much as they like and people would still give them business. But the companies aren't doing that. The government needs to leave the internet and the people who rightfully own it ALONE. We have EVERY right to vote, yet we can't I like to call that a governmental FAIL.

The Internet has offered massive amounts of job opportunities to people all around the world as well as strong business competition. Like I've said before, it's done more good than harm. Remember, it isn't about all these excuses those governments try to bring up. They simply just want complete control over their people. They are tyrants and dictators and it is completely unacceptable.

very dissapointed in the position of russian government. It wasnt so long ago when russian government was all for open internet, then they suddenley said that internet should be controlled because, drugs terrorism and cp. they already censored (or forced to edit out certain content) somewhere around 500 websites.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

Google and Facebook are not monopolies: they are not stifling their competition, just outperforming them.

It's an interesting subject though because you could argue that as soon as one company outperforms a rival the imbalance makes it harder for the smaller company to compete and this effect is multiplied over time.

To put it arbitrarily, if you had 25% of the market and your competitor had 75% gaining 1% off them would be much harder than if the 75% were shared between two or more competitors.

This highlights a paradox within capitalism. Successful companies are fantastic for the nation's economy but if they become too successful they begin to damage it and impede their own progress. So should companies be penalised for their success? Should they be forced to hand over a percentage of their profits to rival companies? Or pay higher taxes? (If they pay them at all!)

Shh... you're pretty.
