Is anyone here doing this? It's an initiative to get developers making one game every month. McFunkypants is a well known indie, and last year made one game a month. He's spreading the good word, and everyone is signing up and attempting to do the same. Check it out at http://www.onegameamonth.com/.

I'm going for it, even though 2013 is going to be a big year as is. It'll be fun, I'll learn a lot, and hopefully make 12 games.

You should join!

Interesting, I think I heard about this a few months ago on this here forum...

Lets see now...
time = limited
possibility... = probable
number of current projects... = packed!

A big year indeed!

I'm in. I've only completed one game in my life and I aim to change that. My first entry will be an rpg written in qb64. I would choose agk but can't afford it right now

bitJericho - FreedomEngine?

Can you not use the free version to just prototype until you save up for it? it is even cheaper than the initial launch now...

Also what's qb64? QBasic? 64bit?

Happy New Year guys, and bitJericho not seen you for a while...

I want something free and multiplatform. OSS is also preferred, so qb64 is my best bet as it runs on Linux, windows and MacOSX. Since I know BASIC like the back of my hand QB64 is a no-brainer for me.

Only when you are a professional does that apply, and never strictly! When learning anything, as most of us are students of the almighty game, it really is a case of practice, practice, practice. I draw a lot at work, on paper. I draw things over and over again until I have a clear vision in my head, and a solid grasp on the concept. We are always learning, and should always be producing. Quality only comes after a large quantity of practice!

How are you all doing so far?

Only one more day until week 1 is done. I feel like I'm getting there but there's a lot to do with an RPG! I'm done with character movement. Now to fix some map loading bug and to add collision. Here's a screen of what I've got so far.

Hey that looks cool, Jericho!

I've got a small playable of my work so far at http://www.glightdev.com/Unity/DSB.html - it's in Unity3D.

My first website ever (mid-90s) was about QBasic, it was called QNewbie. I was really big into the QB scene back then. I didn't know there was a qb64, is it still all the same command set?

Yeah looks like it's fully compatible except it adds new commands and a hardware acceleration version coming soon. (software rendering is quite enough for a not too graphically intense game as long as you know what you're doing, ie, decoupling, frame rate adjusting, simple optimizing as you go)

Hey all. I'm wondering if you guys can test what I've got so far. There's a few things I'm curious about. Does it run at a reasonable speed? Does it display properly on your screen. Are there black borders on the left and right if you're using a widescreen monitor, or is it stretched out?

Right now in the demo you can walk around and manipulate the dialog box. If you see anything funky, take a screen so I can see what's going on. I'm just a day or two away from starting on the actual map and story, so this test will hopefully go well

PS. If the FPS jumps around a lot that's ok. There's an auto framerate limiter to make the output look completely smooth. If it gets "laggy", let me know what your hardware is.

I think I'm going to go for it myself! I did 3 games last year, was considering doubling that. But I like big goals !

Lets say I don't make 12, but say 9? That's a lot more than my original goal and really pushes me. I think it will cause me to fine tune my skills and learn how to be more productive with my time.

I will be starting with my first project of the year an AppGameKit Platformer I started on the first:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=202704&b=48

And will be blogging about it on my blog : Punchy Puncherton Strikes Again

Quote: " Does it run at a reasonable speed?"

I get 48 FPS on a grassy part of the map, 42 FPS on a busy part of the map.

Quote: "Does it display properly on your screen."

The text in the dialog doesn't seem to display as intended. Words often get split between lines and there was even a word that got split between two different dialog boxes.

Quote: "Are there black borders on the left and right if you're using a widescreen monitor, or is it stretched out?"

There were black borders on my screen.

And you can walk on the water a bit near the top of the tree. I hope this helps!

That's awesome to hear. When the proper resolution is set the engine will fill up those black borders. The textbox in the demo doesn't feature proper wordwrap but I've since properly implemented that. I've had a few more people test it out and no problems so I'll be adding a couple more engine features and then I can start on the real map and story

Thanks!

Quality over quantity only counts for products. For skills, the way to go somewhere is by a volume of work, not a single 'good' one.

I wanted to say something similar, tha_rami. "Quality, not quantity" also smacks of a little risk aversion. Failure is all part of that process.

BTW, I showed a few people here at work Super Crate Box, and my boss is obsessed. You guys should look at an arcade version of it!

If you're learning then the quality is going to be crap whatever you do. Making as much as you can and not being disheartened when things go wrong is how you improve. If you're afraid of making mistakes then that's all you'll ever make. I speak from experience.

I'm not sure if I'll dedicate all year to this, but I did one this month, anyway.

One reason I would do something like this is to brainstorm and prototype ideas. If I have ideas, I like to prototype them quickly to see if they catch my fancy. Then I might launch a longer-term project.
