I personally sell business to business leads to various individuals and companies. I sell data like standard contact information(phone/fax/address, do not call registry verified) and other cool things like business social media profiles. These types of things are fairly popular and business is booming.

Recently I have decided to start scaling up and the first step is a logo and website. These are the initial designs, tell me what you think:

I will probably append something to this, so the final name might be something like "codex marketing". As far as a name, how is it? Most of my friends thought it sounded too boring and technical. My idea behind the name is that it was a combination of "Co" and "Rolodex". Also a Codex is a kind of epic name for huge compilation of data, which is kind of in line with what I sell.

As far as the design, how is that? I like red and black, but most successful companies seem to use blues.

Looks like there are a few issues here! I'm not sure if you own the trademark for Codex yet, but if you don't good luck getting it. A quick trademark search shows that (in the USA) that's been trademarked like nobody's business.

Also, regarding the logo, it breaks one of the key rules to good logo design, it's a tad too complex. The dot between the 'co' and 'dex', that red 'e', and the inverted color 'x' cumulatively make the logo too complex overall to be memorable. Personally, I'd either keep the dot and the dot only, or I'd keep the inverted 'x' and that only. Also as you mentioned, blue may be a better color. However, one of the other key logo design rules is that it will look good in almost any color, ideally. I hope you can use my feedback well!

Do you sell Fish? [COD]

The dot might get confused for .com or in your case www.co.dex

And yes the trademark is likely way beyond your financial ability...

How About Corolo ?

I assume you want to stick with these two words, if not throw some more personal preferences at us and we will support you no matter

Regardless of trademarking, how is the name? Any alternative ideas?

Well, trademarking really does matter when it comes to naming. If you have a company called codex, and some other company has a trademark for that, they'll sue the crap out of you.

Ah, I gotcha. Still risky, I'd say, but better.

There are many scenarios... too many to list. Changing/adding to a name by any degree is not as important as whether or not you make financial gain from someone else's trademark/notoriety. A lot will have to do with the use of the current mark and what sector of business it implies.

The good news is that codex is a common word...
codex (Latin caudex for "trunk of a tree" or block of wood, book; plural codices)
which gives you much more room to work with, especially if you intend to add more to it, such as for example; Lead-Codex or Codex Data Systems.

On to the Logo. I would suggest that you flesh out the full name and a by-line (ie:"Solid Business Leads") to go with it before you play around with design, as these things will lead you in different directions. When you have a full understanding of what you want to say with your logo, you'll be better equiped to make that statement/design.

Brian.

I like the C with the red dot in the middle, but I think the dot should be in the very middle.

Here, is a link that explains what they think are the seven rules to making a good logo. (edited)

http://photography.the-venture.net/tag/industrial-revolution/

There have been some who played cute games with their logos and I can't remember them all. Amazon did just that.

Do you notice the arrow from A to Z? Yup, saying you can get everything from a to z at Amazon.com.

THEORY - you know everything but nothing works. PRACTICE - when everything works but don't know why. For me, theory and practice are combined: nothing works and I don't know why.

Also the arrow looks a little like a smile, the 'z' looks like it's being warped by a cheek muscle. Subtle, though I never noticed the A-Z thing, but seems so obvious now.

@OBese87 cool concept, might be good for something else, though my business needs to have a professional straightforward logo

@xplosys great input on that technique, I'll have to try it

I like the second from the bottom a lot, even though the kerning on the dot is wrong and the arrow is weird.

@Epimetheus
Here you go. IMHO "codex marketing" as marketing company may be free.

p.s. there is an arrow.

Here's another less cryptic attempt at a similar style.

Talk to a marketing expert or artist who minored in marketing for logo stuff. Your logo is your visual business card and your brand. Its very important you get it right.

Why because I defended myself lol; that’s like telling your kids to not fight back when someone hits you. Common logic would dictate that the mod should have not tried to incite the slap or insult in the first place but I'm just a common member. If you attempt to insult a person, chances are they will likely reply back with a = or > insult. The best thing you can do is just simply NOT insult people, especially when you’re the moderator. A little counter productive don't you think, your job is to prevent arguments but you incite them? Maybe thats just me, who knows.

Why are you upset with the link. It seems relevant, doesn't it? Isn't that the thread where you said you consulted a professional about your logo? Does that thread not reinforce your statement in this thread or am I missing something?
