Some films are really popular and get a large following, like Star Wars, The Matrix, and The Lord of the Rings. Others are often forgotten about, or were somewhat obscure to begin with, or came out a long time ago, or were simply bad movies but for whatever reason, they are movies that nobody likes to discuss.

One such movie is Eragon. Based on the novel by Christopher Paolini, which is my personal favorite book, this turd of a movie hit the fan in 2006, forever ruining the reputation of the book series. Roger Ebert refused to review it, fans hated it, and it bombed at the box office. I consider it to be one of the worst movies ever made, not only because it seems to follow a completely different story from the book, but also because it is a bad movie in its own right. I could go on and on about where and how this movie screwed up, but I won't.

Another such movie is Spider-Man 3. Although it had the same cast as the previous two Spiderman movies, this film somehow came out as a campy, self-hating mockery of a superhero movie. I think what ruined it for me was the dance scene with Emo-Spiderman and his ex-girlfriend-now-lounge-singer. How did that happen? Two thumbs down.

Another superhero movie is The Dark Knight Rises. As a film, it's a boring, slow-paced and strange reimagining of the superhero genre. Not a bad movie, just an OK movie. What did you expect from Batman? I didn't like the fearful portrayal of the modern world, but my main complaint is with this movie's portrayal of Catwoman. Catwoman is one of my all-time favorite superhero characters, especially Tim Burton's version in Batman Returns. This movie's Catwoman departs from the deep and wonderful character that I've grown used to and instead opts for a dull and unimaginitive version played by Anne Hathaway. Yes, Anne Hathaway, the girl from Princess Diaries. That is all I have to say about it. Princess Diaries... in Batman? Oh, boy.

While I'm on the subject of Batman, I think I'll give Batman Returns more of a mention. This is my all-time favorite Batman movie. There isn't a whole lot to say about it, you just have to watch it. I saw it as a child and didn't care for it much, but neither did I like Batman in general. In recent years, I've grown to be more of a Bat-fan, because the dark tone of Batman is a lot easier for me to cope with as an adult. It's not scary, boring, or strange (for the most part). I think that as time goes on, the superhero genre will evolve and adapt, and if blunders like Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises can be avoided, there is a lot of potential for great entertainment.

Anyways, movies are sort of my thing, so I just thought I'd name a few of them that other people don't care so much about. Does anyone else have any movies that they feel deserve mention?

How about Hitman? It was a great video game series and one of my favourite games to play, in the series I've only missed Blood Money and I just picked that up in the Steam sale. The movie on the other hand, I couldn't stand it. IMO it was a terrible movie. The annoying thing is, Hitman could have been made into a great movie.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is another, as a movie it's enjoyable, but it felt too different to the video game and well, then you have the crazy gravity defying jumps and fights in mid air and crazy stuff you might expect from some anime series but not Final Fantasy VII...if you had that in the game, well, you wouldn't need to find a key to get back into Midgar on the 3rd disk, you'd just jump over the wall.

As for Dark Knight Rises, well I enjoyed the new Batmans and I agree it's the worst of the 3, but I still enjoyed it. However, the best ones would either be the Adam West series for the comical value or the Tim Burton ones. Though it seems any Batman with Robin in it seems to not be very good.

I suppose in a related movie, there is Catwoman with Halle Berry...she was an all right Bond girl, but as a Catwoman? No. That movie was awful, the trailer looked awful, they say you can judge a book by its cover, well I wish I did. Don't watch it.

Then leading onto James Bond. I love the movies, but the Daniel Craig ones seem to have lost the charm of the Bond movies, it sees to be trying to appeal to a modern action film audience, which to me is taking away what makes a James Bond movie different and why I enjoy them. As action films, they are great films, they're just not James Bond films IMO.

I dont think it was terrible at all - I think it ws pretty good, only bad thing was the "47 actor" - he.. was... too..
he didnt look "ice cold".


as for FF VII - I absolutly love that movie, it's fantastic in my opinion anyway

and I also love Dark Knight Rises to death aswell.. I actually think batman begins was the worst of them

The latest resident evil film was, whilst amusing, pretty terrible. At the beginning I feared that the entirety of the film would be spent escaping the test facility, as it would advance the storyline in no way at all. My fears were realized and it seems that the entire film is simply an advertisement for the next film. Serves me and my friends right, as we were the only people in the cinema (spare 1 or 2 attending on their lonesome). So yeah, -10 points

OK, here are some movies I can recommend.

Ragu - An indie film about a male Italian finding his perfect bride, but finds out that she made him pasta sauce using tomatoes out of a jar instead of the traditional way with real tomatoes fresh from the garden. A strange set up, but completely worth watching.

Apollo 13 - More of a movie than a documentary, I found it very touching to watch.

Water for Elefants (2011) - No one seems to know about this film. Very recent and certainly among the best on my list.

Blow - Based on a real story, this film is not only great to watch, but also conveys a message. It's about a guy who gets into the drug dealing business, but his life soon goes downhill.

Carnage - Not what the title suggests, "two pairs of parents hold a cordial meeting after their sons are involved in a fight, though as their time together progresses, increasingly childish behavior throws the evening into chaos." Not something you will ever find on top ratings, but it belongs there. It's based on an old theatre play.

Moves that SUCKED listed below.

21 Jump Street - I guess it's me, but this movie was really bad. It's about two cops who are both morons, but trying their best to be good cops (or something like that). The humor isn't clever, the characters aren't likable, and the plot was your typical hollywood action cliché.

Batman : The Dark Knight Rises - Fluffy said it all.

Darren Shan - The series of books (12 in total) were so exciting and awesome, I've never been this involved in a written story since Harry Potter. The movie was a gigantic waste of potential and a slap to the face, as they tried to compress all 12 books into one crappy movie.

If we're gonna include movies we like as well, I would say Survive Style 5+ (warning: bad language). Crazy Japanese film starring Vinnie Jones, described as Pulp Fiction on crack, not many people I know have heard of it...it being a foreign film, but it's worth watching IMO.

@Nickydude-

Actually, I think that most everybody is on the same side when it comes to almost all of the movies that come out these days. There are good ones, and there are bad ones. Just because you can't pick a side doesn't mean the rest of us can't. The people responsible for making a bad movie should be called out. At the same time, those who make good movies deserve a little bit more press. I think this thread serves both of those purposes.

What large box do you live in where everyone has the same opinion of movies? Opinions are subjective, and that was the point Nickydude was trying to make, not that he hasn't chosen a side (???). Can't imagine how that was confusing.

Before this turns into a flame war, I just want to clarify that what I meant was that when it comes to modern movies, the crowd has wisdom and this thread is for people to say which movies should or should not be seen. Yes, opinions are subjective, but in my own subjective opinion, opinions on modern movies are very objective.

I too loved that book, its a shame the writers grandpa died before the series was finished, I still patiently wait for the next book.

The Naked Lunch. - very strange film

1974 Jack and the beanstalk cartoon - very strange film

The Elm-Chanted forest - very strange cartoon, with bazaar mushroom dance.

I watched some of short circuit on tv the other day, that was a truly terrible film.

Dante's peak wins my worst film of all time award followed closely by anaconda.

Dunno, I mean I know people who hated the new Batman movie, but I enjoyed it (least favourite, but still liked it). There's a big divide over the Twilight movies, those who hate it and those who love it and there's quite a few Twilight fans out there. And you can see me and Quik disagreeing on a couple of movies.

So I think there will be a certain amount of divide, but it's a case of 'to each his own' really. I don't think the divide really matters because all we're doing is discussion opinions, so they will differ and that's fine.

speaking of twilight, I personalyl didnt like the movie - but thats because I absolutly LOVE the books, but the movie didnt feel that much up to it - but they are fine bth - just dont like edwards actor, HE IS NOT HOT ENOUGH

WHAAAAAAAAT!?
I will only accept that if you have never played the Hitman games; and even then it was a poor imitation of the Bourne films. It completely abandoned the lore of the games and became just another crap action movie. 47 is not a wise-cracking loveable rogue! I half expected him to start drinking Martinis! The action sequences where just pathetic with ridiculous Mexican stand-offs and stilted kung-fu battles. Also, why are the other clones black and Asian!? Why are they there to begin with? The whole point of 47 is that he was the first successfully cloned assassin!

I actually felt sorry for Timothy Olyphant: he tried hard to give a good performance but he's not fit for the role at ALL (he looks about 12 years old). I think Ralph Fiennes would have made a great 47.

Agent 47 is a very interesting character that provokes the introspective questions "What does it mean to be human?" and "What is identity?". These are subjects that could have been examined deeper in the film than was possible with the games but they seem to have gone completely over the head of the director.

I wanted to see 47 struggle with his identity and morality. I wanted to see him dig up his past to try and discover who he was and why he had been created. Instead I got a defective Jason Bourne clone.

Shh... you're pretty.

Probably doesn't belong here but I'm just gonna throw in a mention for Contact, possibly one of the best, and yet least mentioned, sci-fi films I've ever seen. Not only is it a realistic scenario and quite accurately explores how people would go about a discovery of alien communication, but I think it has a good message for humanity as well; one thing I took away from it is that regardless of the trouble and arguing us humans go through on a daily basis, one way or another, our collective hive-mind figures things out and gets things done. Definitely one of my favourites.

That pretty much highlights my problems with it Obese. For the Hitman games the characterisation of Agent 47 is highly important to the game's plot. If they hit the nail on the head for his characterisation and including his own internal conflicts and search for identity, then it would have significantly improved the film IMO.

Come to think of it, I might play through them again. Though, might need to replace Hitman: Contracts, I think my disk is damaged.

The Dark Knight rises wasn't a boring movie. In my opinion the problem with the movie was it was a movie that mainly focused on Bruce Wayne. I go to see a Batman movie to see Batman. All that being said, I think they did a good job with the film and on ending that trilogy.

Also I think you're opinion that most modern movies either go into the Love it/Hate it category (unless I misunderstand what you're saying) is incorrect. Let's take Water for Elephants as an example. My wife, my mother, and most people I know LOVE this movie. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. I wouldn't recommend that people watch it but I wouldn't say it's a bad movie. I didn't enjoy the story being told.

Also as the internet is mostly filled with hate, any negative opinion on most things is one I will choose to ignore, particularly if it is the popular opinion online. I could have potentially missed out on many things I enjoyed if I had listened to internet opinions. It's my least favourite thing about the internet, it gives people who think their opinion is the one should be listened to a place to spout their hatred. (Please note that I am not referencing anybody in this thread, simple people in general)

Regarding The Dark Knight Rises, I'm just glad the trilogy is over. Now, maybe Batman can go back to the classic TV/Tim Burton movie version. For the record, I did like Batman Begins, but of course it wasn't as good as Batman Returns.

I haven't seen Water for Elephants, but when you say you aren't qualified to give an opinion on it, I take that to mean you aren't the movie's intended demographic. Of course, people shouldn't berate movies that they aren't emotionally invested in or know little about. However, each of the movies I mentioned I feel attached to in some way. For instance, I am a pretty big fan of the Spider-Man movies, so when I saw Spider-Man 3, it was a huge letdown for me. I think it is safe to assume that Spider-Man 3 would be a huge letdown for anyone who was a fan of the previous two Spider-Man movies.

Regarding internet hate, all I can say is, more power to the haters. Sure, people are sheep, and usually opinions will swing wildly one way or the other, so you can't take anything anyone says seriously. However, I know that if I feel strongly about something and someone concurs with me 100%, I feel a little bit happier. Movies tend to be a subject that people are extremely polarized about, so it's easy to find people on the internet who feel the same way you do about a film. If you've never seen the film in the first place, you should at least consider what people on the internet have to say about it, even if you want to keep an open mind and decide on your opinion for yourself. I bet you'll agree with what all of the wicked, hateful people have to say.

Both are Joseph Gordon-Levitt movies, and pretty darn good I'd say.

I'm not even sure how to describe it, but aliens manipulate the lives of many humans, forming various memories by using their telekinetic powers. Sounds a little campy from my description, but it's a great movie.

I'm gonna have to disagree on every aspect. A terribly boring film and how realistic is that aliens send us blueprints to an advanced machine and we're able to decipher them? Code crackers have had a hard enough time cracking a WW2 message found on a pigeon a few months ago, but we can crack an alien language? This makes about as much sense as uploading a virus to an alien mothership via usb stick.

The difference is that WW2 codes were designed to be difficult to crack, whereas the messages in Contact are supposed to be decipherable. To paraphrase Jodie Foster from the film, "Maths is the only universal language". As for uploading a virus to the mothership - fair point

For the majority of the public this made no difference to the film, and for the rest of us it was a mild annoyance (depending on alcohol consumed) that could be put aside to enjoy an action movie (much like everything in the Star Wars prequels).

What gets on my wick, and which should even to non-programmers, is they have like seconds to upload the virus before getting caught. Every second counts. It's like stuffed down your throat about how little time there is and the longer they are there the more likely they are to be caught and then blip that's the end of the human race etc etc. So why on earth do they include an animated laughing skull as part of the upload? Lets be fair even in those days uploading a virus would be a pretty quick data transfer. So it's the skull that obviously takes up most of the space. Plus the additional development time spent on making a media file work on alien hardware. It was hard enough before VLC came along...

Oh and punching an (totally and utterly unseen before and covered in exoskeleton) alien out with one punch, before turning your back on it (happy that it is passed out) and smoking a cigar. Nice.

Might as well add this one to the list, Plan 9 From Outta Space. Can't beat a good Ed Wood film, it's got zombies, vampires and aliens, everything you could possibly want out of a movie. It's so awful I had to watch it twice.



Oh and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, which unfortunately is a really misleading title for a disappointing movies.

Nah, if you want really really bad movies then I will mention Snakes on a train. If that is too highbrow for you then nothing compares to the ultimate shame that is Ankle biters. It's got 1.3 in IMDB, and I rented it about a decade ago. Really thought it was a mistake DVD in the box as it was soooo bad quality. Still, vampire dwarves really gets you interested. Until it's too late...

Biggest trap film in recent years has to be Marley and Me. Trailer looks like a nice fun romantic comedy with some light doggy fluff. What could be better for a nice family film for everyone? I guessed at it's dark motives about half way in when I noticed time was travelling rather faster than a film normally does. I don't know *exactly* what happens in the last 5 minutes of the film, but lets just say after they took the dog to the vet it took me about half an hour to get the wife out of the bathroom crying about our cat. And then another hour to stop her trying to hug it all the time. As far as she is concerned the dog is fine. Just *fine*. I've read the synopsis of "The Notebook". There is no chance she is getting within 100 feet of that one...

Oh and Memento was awesome. Easily the best film I watched last decade.

Oh come on now; Nolan Batmans deserve just a little bit more credit in here. Give the guy a break, he's only created the best superhero films in the past decade. Although I do like Ironman films. But this...





At least the new Bane has a larger vocabulary...? (3:30)

Original greats such as the Tim Burton Batmans and Sean Connery Bonds have the nostalgic advantage. It is usually harder to beat an original classic; or is it easier?

I honestly dont care much if a movie - of a game, ventures away from the story - as a matter of fact, I like it.

MirrorMask: One of the most underrated films of all time. Simply brilliant and surreal. The few people I know who've seen it hate it. But they all suck and I'm awesome so naturally my opinion overrides theirs Seriously though, anyone who likes surrealism would to good to watch it. It's truly an enchanting little piece.

Having played Absolution, though not completing it, in terms of the series I think it makes sense. Agent 47 does have a human side and he can be caring, which is a part of his conflict, he's a clone and a trained cold blooded killer and was created for that purpose, but with his struggling of identity and morality, he's not always cold and he has demonstrated human feelings (adding to the idea of what is means to be human).

For example, at the start of Hitman 2 he's struggling with his morality and is seeking forgiveness for his sins (hence he goes to confession), and as a clone he doesn't think he has place in the world, he donates heavily to the church and makes friends with a priest who supports him. His mission then becomes about rescuing him and finding himself returning to the life he tried to give up. I think that human side of him is brought out more in Absolution. Absolution is about protecting somebody and also vengeance and I guess, judging by the name, finding absolution, which he has tried to do before. So these are themes present in previous Hitman games. But then I've yet to complete Absolution, so there may be spoilers I've missed, but so far, he's still showing himself as the Agent 47 I am used to...just with added instinct.

The agent 47 in the movie doesn't really match that. If you like what they did with the movie, it's fine, but I found it hard to enjoy.

The Comfort of Strangers. A strange film it is. Not even Christopher Walken was able to save this art house failure.

Safe House. Guns, explosions, and jump scares. Throw in a few corny lines and it's one step away from Alien VS Predator.

Jumper. The first of many bad 21st century teen action movies. Super powers don't automatically make for a good film.

Marley and Me. Owen Wilson and a bunch of emotional BS. What is there to say?

Primer was OK. I liked Timeline better, but either way it's nice to see a "scientific" portrayal of time travel. Into the Wild was pretty terrible, if you ask me. Crappy book, crappy movie. The Lives of Others was a good movie, but it felt like a ripoff of 1984. Then when I saw the movie adaptation of 1984, I realized how much better The Lives of Others was. The only other one of those that I saw was The Darjeeling Ltd, which was a pretty good movie, but if you ask me it was kind of forgettable.

I can't think of any relatively obscure movies that I'd recommend. Maybe Idiocracy? It's a pretty good comedy. There are also a few anime films that are pretty interesting as well, such as Howl's Moving Castle. While I'm on the subject of Japan, I just saw Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. It did feel kind of deep, but to be honest I expected something a lot better. I realize of course that a film based on someone's dreams isn't going to recreate them 100%, so it's understandable why this movie is just OK.

Idiocracy is a comedy???? Now if we're talking terrible movies that one could easily find itself in my top 5 worst movies I've ever seen. After reading about what a clever comedy it is and how it is an underrated gem, I was really looking forward to seeing it. I didn't laugh once and it was a chore to sit through the whole thing. I felt like it was aimed at the very people it was trying to mock.

That's funny, I had about the opposite reaction. IMO, it's a movie that is too intelligent and complex and talky, but the funny parts were the really dumb parts. It's just funny to think about how they probably sat down and planned out the dumbest scenarios they possibly could. In the movie, the system failed because it was retarded, and the filmmakers probably thought long and hard about the most epic way everything could come crashing down. Although really, if people got that stupid, society wouldn't be near as complex as it was portrayed in the film.

I've heard of Oldboy and that it was good.
I never finished watching little miss sunshine but it was alright. I think without all the jokes from the grandpa I would've found it boring.

I think it completely failed at satire. I think they tried to be intelligent and clever but failed. As I said I didn't laugh once. Even in some of the worst comedies I've seen there has been at least one joke that make me laugh.

Idiocracy was too stupid. I think the premise they were working on was good, but the implementation was awful. It amazes me the amount of positive praise the film received.

Idiocracy was amazing! Absolutely loved that movie. It wasn't something I laughed out loud non stop, but I just genuinely enjoyed it and found it very clever. It's one of those movies that is so stupid, it's smart.

Words cannot describe my Greatness... But I'll give it a shot.

I thought this one was a little more known and talked about, it got a lot of bad rep after the Viginia Tech massacre, because there were pictures of the murderer doing poses from the film. The film itself was very good, though weird.

Talking of good Korean films, there's A Tale of Two Sisters. I thought it was pretty damn good. I'd link the trailer, but I don't think it does it justice.

I suppose I could add to my list, the Swedish, Let the Right One In. The American version (Let Me In) is good, but the Swedish original is definitely worth watching.

Indeed, the Revenge trilogy as well as movies like A Bittersweet Life are a good starting-point for people interested in korean cinema.

Absolutely. Quite sad to see that the rubbish remake gets so much more attention, altho' the original is far more superb in every aspect. Great cinematography, soundtrack and stellar atmosphere.

Anyone already heard of the Oldboy remake starring Will Smith? Quite certain that it will go wrong in oh so many ways that it'd be a ridiculous viewing pleasure.

Will Smith? I don't mind him as an actor, but I really can't imagine him fitting the part.

No offense and you might not have thought of it but those you tube links are for ripped movies.
For all You Tube might infer they have piracy under control it is still awash with these and if a movie is on there it doesn't mean its its legal. I doubt the original copyright owners posted these.
I know I might be a killjoy but your gonna have a bunch of hits on those linking from this site.
