To all our Aussies, may your day be full of beer and BBQ.

it is unfortunately raining heavily in southeast Queensland so the oven grill will have to suffice.

Happy Australia Day! Unfortunately I don't plan on going there anytime soon since I'm sorta creeped out by spiders and apparently there's huge ones there.

I think we should start talking with signatures again!

True Aussie At least you don't have lambnesia.

Mine was pretty good, visited family. However, I'm not hung over because I don't drink (being a P-plater).

I think we should pay a trip to parliament house. Adam Hills is awesome and hilarious. While I'm here I might watch a few more of his videos.

I spent it in Bali, eating BBQ corn and slamming beers at the pool. Honestly, could have gone a snag with onion and BBQ sauce though, but didn't really want to find an Aussie party. Too many bogans for my liking! Was a good weekend though.

Rain, Swimming pool and Barbecue, Wonderful!
I never understood why Australia day is in Late January though, it always rains!

@Dark Frager about those huge spiders... They aren't that bad... it's the little ones you have to look out for

Yeah there's some pretty big spiders here, they'll bite you and it might hurt a bit but yeah it's the little black ones and the funnel web that really hurt (I'm pretty sure the funnel web can kill, and fast).

Surprisingly, even as the city which sees every season in 1 day most of the time, Melbourne saw clear skies all day.

Meanwhile...in Australia

Lucky! The sky was a bit threatening in Sydney. We've also had a recent storm, luckily the area I live in only saw heavy rain.

Wow is that real? (I can't see very well currently I need to get to sleep) I've never seen any that big before.

I forgot to mention that whilst swimming in the Indus-(fast flowing part of the Murray-)river I found myself face to face with a lovely little, highly venomous tiger snake which had decided to paddle downstream. Once it was 1-ft away from me, considering that I didn't want it's fangs embedded in my neck..
I decided that it was time to swim like one had not ever swam before (aka I took off downstream as fast as I could, squealing like a little girl in the process).

So yeah, another glorious story by bro incorporated

excuse my semi conscious rambling.

Damn, that's a big orb! It could nearly take on a dropbear...

but if there was a dropbear I wouldn't hang around to take a picture or to see who won.

Where I am, we regularly get Wolf spiders as large as the palm of your hand, and Huntsman spiders even bigger.

Quote: "Damn, that's a big orb!"

And they're very common as well as you probably know. At least they'll keep the snake population down.

Where about in Australia do you live? Apparently you can pick up huntsmans and place them out side if they're in your house. I haven't yet brought myself to do it.

Quote: "So yeah, another glorious story by bro incorporated"

Since we're swapping stories... I was at my grandmother's place and saw a wasp dragging a motionless huntsman across the grass. Then a magpie swoops down and snaps at the wasp, injuring it. It then grabs the huntsman and flies off! Probably the only time I've ever felt sorry for a wasp.

This is why we win gold for the swimming.

Are you in vic? I used to live in vic and yeah, the wolf spiders were huge, and really zippy.
And Vic seems to be infested with giant huntsmans, where we used to live there were heaps. I would never pick one up, they seem to know how scary they are and really play up to the giant scary spider role. I remember trying to squash one with a shovel once only to have it actually attack the blade so ferociously I could only stop and think, "man, what a psycho spider!"

I also remember wood chopping duty, and wacking a big piece of wood with the splitting axe only to find out that it was huntsman nursery, A volcanic eruption of huntsmans of all sizes spewing out of the cracks in the stump, too many to logically fit in there, I ran away and wouldn't chop the wood, and neither would any one else. It was a bit cold that night

here in southeast Queensland there are still huntsmans but not many, I have had only one in my house in 3 years, and have only seen about 2 or 3.

hodgey: on orbs, yeah, we get them at our place, they like to build their webs over the entryway garden path. so long as you know to duck and do robot chops while you walk at night its ok. I leave Them be because theyre pretty chilled and they look cool, I like seeing how big they can get before a bird gets them, I guess there is a point where they can get the bird after all.

hands up if you have ever done a mad jump away upon finding a blue tongue tail sticking out of something!

I've never had a problem with snakes, I've always been lucky enough see them far enough away to stop and let them get away, but I am amazed we were never bitten as kids, running through the ungrazed paddocks barefoot on 30 degree summer days doesn't seem as good an idea as it used to.

Next time use karate. It'll certainly test your accuracy.

Their webs are very strong as well. Apparently a bunch of golden orb weaver webs can hold up a human. I don't fancy proving this first hand.

Quote: "I've never had a problem with snakes"

You've just reminded me. I was walking home one day and there was a snake a about 1/2 a metre from the path into the bush. I went home and looked it up, apparently it was a diamond python (harmless I'm told) and it had a bulge about halfway along its body. It seemed quite happy where it was.

I still don't Like my chances...

I might create a new style and call it "Fist of the Huntsman"

*Cries* Unfortunately for me I'm an arachnophobic, though as nightmarish as it maybe...I am not surprised, it is Australia after all, the land of everything wants to kill you.

I don't think you could ever lose with a style based off an 8-legged killer.

Quote: "it is Australia after all, the land of everything wants to kill you."

Growing up in Australia you become one of two things. a) A master of survival - raised to kill or be killed or b) dead.

I have to ask, what are the spiders like in England? I imagine their a civilised bunch.

They are the gentlemanly type, quite stuck up too, they think they're too good to go around killing snakes, they don't get into that sort of riff raff, it's not what gentlemen do.

In other words, they're a bunch of pansies. Not that I mind though, wouldn't want them becoming bold and roughing up the locals.
