Everything was working fine, and most is still fine. But a little bit ago a few things starting running sluggish and slow to respond. Text boxes on facebook are slow to take focus, drawing operations in photoshop are slow to respond. At first I though maybe I was hitting the page file too much and reduced my memory footprint from 15GB to 7GB (I had a lot open). Task manager doesn't show the CPU being used by anything, so I'm not sure what the issue is. A reboot would likely fix the issue, but I'd like to know what caused it all of a sudden. It feels like a background service is running but I see no evidence of such other than the random symptoms.

Specs:
Windows 7 Ultimate
i7-3770k
16GB
SSD (system & scratch disk, currently on SATA2 instead of 3 due to a motherboard issue)

Seems odd! I'm sure you checked, but maybe antivirus is/was updating? Or possibly a memory leak in an application somewhere?

Or just a virus uses your PC for dark deeds like botnet?

I just finished checking my AV actually. While it is scheduled for a weekly scan, nothing was in progress today.

I closed photoshop and reopened it and the problem seems to have gone away. Odd, but I'm not complaining. I only had one file opened that I was working on anyway.

But I'll do a full system scan later tonight just to be sure it's not a virus.

Are you using Photoshop CS5?
Quote: "Personally I haven't encountered this problem yet, but after searching on other forums, it seems PH CS5 64bit gobbles up all memory after a while (only on Windows 7?) - one solution is to quit PH, and restart.

Try disabling the hardware opengl acceleration in your preferences - for some users it solved the problem. The 32bit version might not have this problem."

Did a google search for 'photoshop memory leak' and a bunch of sites pulled up.

This got me checking my services again...

Check if you have SuperFetch Enabled
See if Thread Ordering Service is running
And see if Volume Shadow Copy is enabled or not

I tend to keep VSC disabled but today decided I would turn it on again after checking... I have the other two enabled, they are usually disabled by default, I set them all to automatic start, not delayed...

Might help...

@zeroSlave,
Yes, I'm using CS5 64-bit and I believe I do use OGL acceleration. Thanks for the info.
What's weird though is that I've often left PS open for days at a time and typically don't have any issue. I just opened it up this afternoon though and the problem started shortly after. I wonder if there's a patch or if Adobe will just make me upgrade later to another version. Either way, I hate the interface change in CS5 from CS2; using their own custom GUI.

I did notice that Avira shadow copy was running, but not the windows service.

I believe I disabled superfetch when I first installed. I don't think it really impacts the difference once the application is running (just initial startup I thought), but I should probably reenable it now.

The thread ordering service is not running, as its defaulted to anyway.

Does your computer use Optimus? My i7 laptop used the internal Intel graphics for some apps which I switched to the superior Nvidia GPU for increased performance.

One thing my PC did years ago was all of a sudden start running like a dog. I eventually traced it to a BIOS setting which clicked in if it got too many crashes. Something like BMW's limp home engine management system that basically does what it sounds like when things go wrong (ie. no going fast incase you blow up the car). Sorry can't be more detailed as it was a long time ago, but look into your BIOS and Google everything. Your motherboard might be doing the same sort of thing.

Cheers

I think that's only on laptops, isn't it?

Some off the shelf systems are actually Laptop types in disguise, like most of the Alienware kits which also have add-in card capabilities, they also feature Optimus style switching... some motherboards also have this feature on custom build hardware... it is becoming more common recently... as it is a good power saving method... why invoke the GPU while folder navigating...

This could be a stretch but check the heat of your CPU or GPU. I had a problem on my old computer where the fan for the integrated graphics card had broke, so after a while it would overheat. The system automatically slows down once the temperature reaches a certain threshold. That could be responsible for the lagging effect. Who knows troubleshooting can be hard

Thought crossed my mind. I used speccy to look at the temps, they were fine. CPU and GPU stayed in the 40s or less.
